LFC fans remember Barcelona miracle

A number of Liverpool fans have been remembering the incredible 4-0 win over Barcelona two years ago, in what is surely Anfield’s greatest night.

The Reds’ world-famous stadium has hosted some special games throughout history, from the Saint-Etienne match in 1977 to the Champions League victory over Chelsea in 2005.

The 90 minutes that took place against Barca on May 7th, 2019 surely tops the pile, however, on an evening that will never be forgotten.

Trailing 3-0 from the Champions League semi-final first leg, Jurgen Klopp’s men produced a stunning comeback, doing it without injured pair Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino.

The eventual 4-0 victory seemed scarcely believable before kickoff and it sent Liverpool through to the final, with the Reds beating Tottenham 2-0 in Madrid.

Due to it being the anniversary of the Barca game, footage has understandably been shared left, right and centre, with The Anfield Wrap posting a video on Twitter.

Martin Snedden to be New Zealand Cricket's chief executive

Martin Snedden was today named as New Zealand Cricket’s chief executive

Lynn McConnell04-May-2001Martin Snedden was today named as New Zealand Cricket’s chief executive.Snedden, who has been serving on the board of NZC in recent years, replaces Christopher Doig, who resigned in February.NZC chairman Sir John Anderson said when announcing Snedden’s appointment today: “Martin Snedden is an excellent appointment for New Zealand Cricket. He brings sound corporate judgement and commercial acumen from his partnership in a successful law firm, but also has an in-depth knowledge and passion for the game from his participation at the highest level.”The 42-year-old lawyer is a former New Zealand representative and when lining up at international forums with other CEO’s he will have the rare distinction, in that company, of having played the game at its highest levels. That should allow Snedden to maintain New Zealand’s high reputation in international circles after the work done by Doig and Anderson for the International Cricket Council.Snedden, a medium-pace bowler who was part of New Zealand’s most successful era during the 1980s, played 25 Tests and 93 One-Day Internationals.During his career he took 114 ODI wickets and 58 Test wickets. After retiring from all cricket after New Zealand’s tour of England in 1990, Snedden served on the New Zealand Cricket Council but did not seek re-election in 1992. He returned to administration when invited to join the board of the revamped New Zealand Cricket. His career-best Test figures were achieved in New Zealand’s memorable 1986/87 victory over the West Indies at Lancaster Park.Snedden took five for 86 in the West Indies second innings, including the wicket of the side’s batting legend and captain Viv Richards. New Zealand won the Test by five wickets to tie the series and allowing itself to finish the 1980s unbeaten in Test series at home.In his last season of Test cricket, Snedden’s ability to hang around at the batting crease was twice demonstrated.During one of Test cricket’s great innings of defiance, played by Mark Greatbatch against Australia in Perth, Snedden batted for 202 minutes and 142 balls to be unbeaten on 33 at the end, New Zealand having saved the game. Greatbatch was 146 not out. Then in the return Test played at the Basin Reserve, Snedden, who was sent in as nightwatchman by skipper John Wright, went close to breaking the world record for the longest time without scoring in a Test match when he stayed on six for 94 minutes. New Zealand won that Test by nine wickets. He is the grandson of a former New Zealand captain Nessie Snedden and his uncle Colin Snedden also played a Test for New Zealand.Snedden has a law degree from the University of Otago and has devoted his working life to the family firm, first as a solicitor and for the past 11 years as a partner of Snedden & Associates. He has twice been a member of the New Zealand Cricket Board, from 1990-1992 and since 1999. He was co-opted onto the Hood Committee which reviewed the governance and structure of New Zealand Cricket in 1995. He has also been an Auckland Cricket representative on the Eden Park Board of Control 1993-1996.Snedden is married to Anne and has four children, Lucy (13), Stephanie (11), Michael (8), and Ella (6).Snedden will take up the Christchurch-based position on July 30. He will remain a member of the New Zealand Cricket Board until that date. A replacement member of the Board will be elected at the annual general meeting in September.

Man Utd fans slam Lindelof vs Aston Villa

Many Manchester United fans have been slamming the performance of Victor Lindelof in the first half of their game at Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon.

The defender was guilty of being too weak against Bertrand Traore as the Villa man slotted into the top corner to give Dean Smith’s team the lead.

It was not the first time in the match that he struggled defensively, as he seemed to keep losing track of runners and was often caught out due to his lack of pace.

The Sweden international will be hoping that he can put in a much better performance in the second half as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side look to put more points on the board in the Premier League table.

Trescothick's heroics in vain as Pakistan win thrilling NatWest Series encounter

Marcus Trescothick’s heroic innings of 137 from only 142 balls, carried England to within three runs of victory in a breathtaking finish to their second clash with Pakistan in the NatWest series. But Pakistan held on to sentence England to a record

Andy Jalil12-Jun-2001Marcus Trescothick’s heroic innings of 137 from only 142 balls, carried England to within three runs of victory in a breathtaking finish to their second clash with Pakistan in the NatWest series.Trescothick’s magnificent effort over nearly four hours took him within one run of equalling the highest individual score in limited overs Internationals at Lord’s. That record goes back to June 1979 when Vivian Richards hit an unbeaten 138 in the World Cup final. He did, however, in partnership with Owais Shah, go past the England fourth wicket record of 154 in One-Day cricket. The two hit 170 off 183 balls with Pakistan appearing to lose control of the game as both batsmen dominated the bowling.Their hundred stand came from 125 balls and the 150 from an even quicker rate off 163 as Shah sped to his half-century from 79 balls. His run-out, perhaps betraying some inexperience as he backed up too far to Trescothick with 46 still needed from 10 overs, precipitated a landslide of England wickets with seven falling for 44.The start of the England innings was disappointing as well when three wickets went down for 26 in ten overs. Nick Knight, who has been in such fine form in this competition, was the first to go, run out for one and after Alec Stewart, four, fell to a catch at point from his pull shot England were two down by the eighth over. After Shah’s dismissal, Trescothick added 20 to his score but lacked support from the middle and lower order. His brilliant innings, which contained three sixes and eleven fours, ended with a catch at deep mid-wicket, with Shahid Afridi holding on to the ball despite a collision which caused Shoaib Malik to leave the field.Trescothick’s was the penultimate wicket to fall, with England six short of their victory target. Finally with three required from the last ball Andy Caddick was stumped, leaving Pakistan winners by two runs and England suffering their eighth successive defeat, their worst sequence in limited overs cricket.Trescothick has now had the mixed fortune to hit three international centuries for England to date, and his team have lost on each occasion.Earlier, Pakistan had got off to a brisk start after being put in to bat in overcast conditions, scoring at the rate of four an over until Darren Gough trapped Saleem Elahi leg before wicket with the total on 28. Elahi, coming in for Saeed whose daughter has been taken ill, was one of two changes in the side from their previous match at Edgbaston with Shoaib Malik, the off-spinner replacing the unfit Shoaib Akhtar.England, also with two changes from the match against Australia, had Michael Vaughan back for Ally Brown and Andy Caddick replaced Robert Croft.Caddick’s eighth over proved most effective with Pakistan losing two important wickets. The departure of pinch hitter Afridi would have been a relief to the hosts. He looked dangerous for England. He slogged a six over long-on, going down the wicket in Alan Mullally’s first over and after the 50 had come up in the fourteenth over, he hit two consecutive boundaries off Caddick. But Caddick had him caught in the same over, for 30, as he tried to cut a ball – coming into him – too close to his body. Pakistan were 59 for two and a run later from a no-ball, Inzamam-ul-Haq misjudged a full toss on the leg stump and was bowled. Caddick had taken two for 33 in eight overs.Pakistan’s hundred came from 153 balls and after 25 overs they were 100 for three. The scoring rate fell considerably as the partnership between Youhana and Younis Khan progressed, to the extent that between the 23rd and 35th overs there were no boundaries hit.It was, nevertheless, a stand that Pakistan needed, and the two revived the innings, taking it to 140 before Younis, on 41, hit Dominic Cork to cover to be caught low by Nick Knight.Youhana, in partnership with Rashid Latif lifted the tempo. He reached his 50 from 89 balls with a four to extra-cover off Cork whose five overs at that stage went for 36. The fifty stand between Youhana and Latif came fast, from 48 balls, and when Latif was bowled by Mark Ealham for 23 from 26 balls, Pakistan were 190 for five.Youhana, scored more freely as the overs climbed into the forties, displaying some lovely strokes, mostly along the ground but on 81, off 119 balls, he played a lofted shot to mid-wicket where Owais Shah held the catch. It was off Mullally who, two overs earlier, had dismissed Abdur Razzaq when Pakistan were 195 for six. After Youhana’s excellent innings which ended on the total of 208, a late flourish from Azhar Mahmood took him to 27 not out from 21 balls as Pakistan reached 242 for eight. It proved to be a vital contribution.Afterwards England captain Alec Stewart was obviously disappointed, but tried to look on the bright side.”Today we’ve seen what a fine player Marcus Trescothick is and we’ve seen the emergence of Owais Shah,” said Stewart. “They were outstanding.”We’ve had two very close games in the last two days and it’s very disappointing to have lost them,” Stewart told Sky Sports.com TV. “We got ourselves in a winning position but at the end we couldn’t quite get home. We couldn’t quite finish the job off.”But England now find themselves adrift at the foot of the NatWest Series table, and on a record run of eight consecutive defeats stretching back to Lahore in October and encompassing the Sri Lanka tour.”It’s mathematically possible (to reach the final). We know it’s going to be hard but we need to hold our heads up high and show a bit of character.”Waqar Younis paid tribute to Trescothick’s great knock: “I think Marcus Trescothick played a magnificent innings. He made us look as though we were going to lose.”It was one of our best games of the tour. I am really happy with the way we bowled, and Yousuf Youhana played the best innings. All the game we fielded well and that’s possibly why we were the winners.”

Celtic urged to move on from Edouard

Paul Robinson believes Odsonne Edouard has played his last game for Celtic and has told the club to ‘wipe the slate clean and start again’.

The lowdown

According to Football Insider’s Celtic source, Edouard has made clear his desire to leave the club in the summer, regardless of the identity of Neil Lennon’s successor.

The Telegraph have named Leicester City as frontrunners for a £15million-£20million deal.

Edouard has spent four seasons in Glasgow, having initially joined on loan before making a permanent move in 2017.

Over the course of 168 appearances in green and white, he’s scored 83 goals and provided 37 assists (via Transfermarkt).

This season, he fired 18 league goals for the distant Scottish Premiership runners-up.

That was enough to finish the campaign as top-scorer, but it was a slight dip from his 2019/20 tally of 21.

Former Celtic star Chris Sutton urged fans to look beyond his goals and face the reality of his ‘sub-standard’ performances amid the club’s struggles.

The latest

Robinson suggested that a clean break before the start of a new managerial era could be good for Celtic, reacting to the claims from a Hoops source that the French starlet wants out.

“Edouard has been linked with the Premier League for some time,” he told Football Insider.

“I think now, the way things are all changing at Celtic, it’s time for him to move on.

“With a new manager coming in and everything else, Celtic need to wipe the slate clean and start again.

“I think you can say he’s played his last game.”

The verdict

If even a new manager has no hope of winning Edouard over, then it’s time to let him go. With one year left on his deal, it may be the club’s final chance to make a healthy profit on their initial investment.

If they receive the fee predicted by the Telegraph, they will be well-placed to conduct their necessary rebuild, even after giving PSG a part of the profits.

The long-term challenge for the club, of course, is changing perceptions. They don’t want to be a stepping stone for young talents, but at the moment, the money and prominence on offer in England is too much for players like Edouard to turn down.

In other news, Kevin Campbell is unconvinced by this possible Celtic signing.

Gareth Bale must start in Spurs’ final game

It’s the final game of the Premier League season and Tottenham Hotspur have everything to play for.

Ryan Mason’s men sit in seventh place knowing that a defeat at Leicester City this afternoon could result in the prospect of no European football next season –  if other results go against them.

However, a win would secure them a place in either the Europa League or the newly-formed Conference League.

After a shocking 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa in midweek, the 29-year-old caretaker boss must look to spark a reaction ahead of kick-off, and he can do so by altering his starting XI. In truth, Spurs were crying out for some added quality in attack, with the likes of Heung-min Son, Dele Alli and Harry Kane underperforming.

Gareth Bale should’ve been the man to provide that spark but there were concerns over his fitness heading into the match, and subsequently, he did not start from the off.

It’s time to unleash him later today as he could prove to be the Lilywhites’ game-changer for one final time.

This encounter against the Foxes is huge for both teams, so it would be wise to let a four-time Champions League winner loose at the King Power Stadium.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/spurs-managerial-latest-update-transfer-rumours-gossip” title= “Read the latest Spurs news, managerial gossip, transfer rumours and more!”]

The 31-year-old superstar was in and out of the team under Jose Mourinho, and while he still proved to be a regular source of goals whenever he featured, it is more recently that he has thrived under Mason.

As per Transfermarkt, the Wales international has scored 14 goals and provided three assists, meaning he has averaged a direct goal contribution every 96 minutes across all competitions.

By comparison, Kane is managing a goal or assist every 81 minutes, and Son is averaging a contribution every 100 minutes, so that shows just how crucial Bale can be to Spurs right now.

Earlier this season, Mourinho lauded the Real Madrid loanee for his “remarkable” and “incredible” attitude off the pitch, and later claimed that he was “better than ever.”

Once hailed as “unplayable” by Harry Redknapp, the £18m-rated dynamo has to be starting a game of this calibre if Mason wants to end the season on a high note.

Bale could hold the key to whether or not Spurs are competing in Europe next season, in what could be his final swansong in a Lilywhites shirt before his loan deal ends.

AND in other news, Levy could rock Spurs’ squad by hiring 43 y/o “phenomenon” who he’s watched “closely”…

Stewart's England future threatened, claims report

Sir Paul Condon’s Anti-Corruption Unit will call for Alec Stewart to be dropped from the England team unless he meets the ACU, it has been claimed today

CricInfo17-Jun-2001Sir Paul Condon’s Anti-Corruption Unit will call for Alec Stewart to be dropped from the England team unless he meets the ACU, it has been claimed today. It is alleged that Stewart received £5,000 from an Indian bookmaker MukeshGupta for supplying information during England’s 1993 tour of India.Condon interviewed Stewart briefly in January but the pair have not met since and Sir Paul is becoming increasingly frustrated that he has not been able to question Stewart at length. In a statement, Sir Paul said: “Negotiations have been conducted primarily through Mr Stewart’s lawyer, and the ACU is becoming increasingly frustrated by the inability of Mr Stewart and his advisers to agree a convenient date.”The ACU remain determined to meet Mr Stewart in the near future.”The BBC says it understand that unless Stewart meets the anti-corruption unit, the unit will urge the England cricket authorities to drop him from the national side.ECB chairman Lord McLaurin has backed Stewart since he was first named in anofficial Indian corruption report last November and he is playing down the seriousness of the situation. He told the BBC: “I think this is a big mountain being made out of quite a small mole hill.”Alec has said all along he is very happy to talk to Sir Paul and his unit.”This is really a matter for them both. But I would expect in the next couple of days for Alec to sit down with Sir Paul.”He added: “When these allegations first came out last year, we conducted our inquiry with Alec, we passed on to Sir Paul and if he needs any help from us he knows where we are – it is between Alec and the ACU now.”MacLaurin, though continued to maintain his tough stance. “We’ve said all along that if any player refuses to co-operate they will be suspended until they do,” added MacLaurin.Stewart claims he may have met Gupta socially on tour but strenuously denies accepting money from him.

Wolves fans on Jimenez injury update

Many Wolves fans have been to left to rave as an injury update emerged on Raul Jimenez.

As per the official website of the Molineux faithful, club doctor Matt Perry has confirmed that the Mexico international will be able to return to playing after suffering a nasty head injury back in November in the 2-1 away win at Arsenal.

Jimenez has also been given the all clear to start heading and aerial duels in training, which is a very promising sign ahead of the new season.

The striker has been such a key player for the Midlands club over the course of the last three seasons, scoring no fewer than 47 goals in 110 games in total across all competitions (Transfermarkt), and his potency in front of goal has been a big miss.

Nonetheless, there was a chance that he may not be able to play football again, and several WWFC supporters are absolutely delighted that he should be able to return next campaign.
