Liverpool: Fans react to Cristian Romero update

Liverpool have been linked with a move for Atalanta defender Cristian Romero, as reported by The Express.

On loan at Atalanta in 2020/21 from Juventus, the centre-back enjoyed a sparking campaign, making 42 appearances whilst registering eight goal contributions; three goals and five assists [Transfermarkt].

Though contracted to Juventus, he is expected to make a permanent switch to his loan club as there was a buy-out clause inserted into his temporary deal, and Atalanta are then plotting to swiftly sell him on for a profit [Express].

Manchester United are also rumoured to be interested in securing his services. However, Liverpool have emerged as favourites for his signature in a deal that could be worth around £43 million [We All Follow United].

As you can imagine, loads of Liverpool diehards took to Twitter to share their thoughts upon hearing these latest developments, as one supporter suspects Romero could replace Joel Matip after another season of injury troubles.

Southampton fans praise Jan Bednarek

Many Southampton fans were delighted with the performance of Jan Bednarek as Poland managed to hold Spain to a 1-1 draw at Euro 2020.

Bednarek was selected as part of Poland’s 26-man squad for the European Championships. Their campaign did not start well as they were defeated 2-1 by Slovakia, meaning they needed a result against Spain to maintain their hopes of progressing to the next round.

Fortunately, they picked up a draw against a Spain side who, while not the all-conquering team of 10-12 years ago, can still be a dangerous proposition. The £22.5m-valued Bednarek (Transfermarkt) was a rock at the heart of the Polish defence, winning five of his seven duels while also completing three interceptions and four tackles as his side thwarted the attacks of La Roja (Sofascore).

These Saints fans were delighted with their defender’s imperious display and they took to social media platform Twitter to share their thoughts on the 25-year-old.

Let’s see what these fans had to say about Bednarek

“A really impressive performance from Jan Bednarek tonight!  Our centre-back won 100% of his tackles vs. Spain & 4/5 of his ground duels. Jan also made the most clearances and tackles in the first half. A solid performance to help keep Poland’s dreams alive”

The Phoney War is over, the transtasman battle is on again

New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming has been around long enough to be wary of Australians bearing gifts

Lynn McConnell14-Sep-2002New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming has been around long enough to be wary of Australians bearing gifts. The extraordinarily complimentary remarks from leg-spinning legend Shane Warne about Fleming’s qualities as the best captain in world cricket this week, in earlier times might have had the potential to turn a young captain’s head. But Fleming has been involved in playing the Australians long enough to know that while the comments from such an unlikely quarter are an affirmation of the results he has achieved, there is also likely to be a fish hook in there somewhere for unwary players. It shouldn’t be forgotten that about the same time last year Warne was claiming New Zealanders were the worst sledgers of all with now-retired wicket-keeper Adam Parore the worst chirper of them all. That rebounded on Australia a little last summer when New Zealand proved highly-competitive in a thrilling Test series played out in their own backyard, with Parore scoring the second Test century of his career, and New Zealand carrying on to dump Australia out of their own one-day series.Perhaps Warne has decided on the complimentary warfare rather than the sniping kind?It should also not be forgotten that Australia’s absence from the one-dayers was partly due to the New Zealanders playing the laws of the tri-series bonus points system to the letter and squeezing the life out of the Australians. The Aussies won’t have forgotten that which all points to a highly competitive match in the ICC Champions’ Trophy being played in Colombo, Sri Lanka tomorrow. It is a vital match, the winner taking all and going on to the semi-finals. New Zealand would dearly love that as they are the defending champions of the tournament.Australia, on the other hand have been knocked out in their first game on the two previous occasions, and they don’t like going too long without their names on world championship trophies. Never have done. The two teams have notable changes from last summer. Chris Cairns, Andre Adams, Craig McMillan and Parore are the most obvious absentees from the New Zealand line-up, and three of them had been integral parts of the one-day apparatus while Adams was a player on the rise.Australia, of course, are without the Waugh twins, Steve and Mark, probably the most notable victims of New Zealand’s tactics in Australia last summer. While Cairns’ absence especially could be seen as crucial to New Zealand’s hopes, it is also a case of being used to it. He wasn’t available for series in Sharjah, Pakistan and the West Indies, and there are no guarantees about how much longer he will be available. It is time for the players in New Zealand’s future to stand up and that is what will determine the side’s fate in this tournament and clarify its hopes for the World Cup in South Africa next year.Players like Mathew Sinclair, Lou Vincent, Scott Styris and Jacob Oram all have the potential for lengthy associations with the national side but it is up to them to seize this opportunity. It is disappointing that Vincent’s main roles in the side of batting and brilliant fielding may be compromised by the desire to have him take the wicket-keeping gloves. The one saving grace is that such is the level of fielding ability in the side that reasonable substitutes are available. But at the same time it has to be acknowledged that Vincent, in the field, is capable of the game-breaking manoeuvre and that asset would be lost while he wears the gloves.Australia, as ever, have the aura of invincibility about them and they showed their readiness in Kenya.Ricky Ponting is growing as a leader and has assured batting class Adam Gilchrist, Michael Bevan, Matthew Hayden and Damien Martyn to back him up while there is no arguing with the bowling skills of Jason Gillespie, Glenn McGrath, Brett Lee and Warne. As always the match shapes as another transtasman classic, albeit played out on foreign fields. There couldn’t be a better way to start the summer.

Southampton: Fans react to Angus Gunn’s departure

Southampton goalkeeper Angus Gunn has completed a move to newly-promoted Norwich City [Norwich City FC Official].

Signed for £10 million from Manchester City in 2018, the 25-year-old went on to make 30 appearances on the South Coast during his time at St Mary’s [Transfermarkt].

In recent times, Gunn fell behind in the pecking order for the Saints and spent the 2020/21 season on loan at Sky Bet Championship side Stoke City [Southampton FC Official].

Interestingly, he was initially meant to be part of the Britannia Stadium outfit’s squad until the end of 2021/22 [Stoke Sentinel].

However, the Saints have since broken a clause inserted into his deal in order for him to complete a £5.27 million move to East Anglia [Transfermarkt].

In light of this, loads of Southampton diehards flocked to Twitter to express their opinions surrounding his departure.

Harvey demolishes England attack

PERTH, Oct 22 AAP – All-rounder Kade Harvey today demolished the England bowling attack, leading the Australian Cricket Board Chairman’s XI to 7-304 off 50 overs in a one-day tour match at Lilac Hill.

Tom Wald22-Oct-2002PERTH, Oct 22 AAP – All-rounder Kade Harvey today demolished the England bowling attack, leading the Australian Cricket Board Chairman’s XI to 7-301 off 50 overs in a one-day tour match at Lilac Hill. With temperatures topping 30 degrees celsius, the West Australian put paid to the tourists’ bowling attack, smashing 114 off just 88 balls,He and captain Michael Hussey (69) put on 152 runs for the sixth wicket to set up the hefty total for the visitors.Harvey hit 10 fours and six sixes in his 97-minute knock. The tourists started poorly with quick Matthew Hoggard opening the match with two wides.Young quick Stephen Harmison set an early scare through the England camp after appearing to injure his knee trying to stop a four in the second over.He left the field but returned just two overs later only to bowl 16 wides for the innings.Left-handed West Australian opening pair Chris Rogers and Marcus North had a 57-run opening partnership before Hoggard had North (22) out lofting a simple catch to England captain Nasser Hussain at cover.Just 12 runs later, Glamorgan speedster Simon Jones made an instant impact with his first ball of the tour, forcing Rogers (30) to prod a simple catch to John Crawley at gully.England spinner Ashley Giles then put the brakes on the innings with three wickets as the home team slumped to 5-122.Giles picked up Ryan Campbell (14) and Brad Hogg (0) in the one over before having former Test batsman David Hookes caught on the boundary after the Victorian coach had hit him for six in the same over.Hussey and Harvey resurrected the innings before Hussey became Jones’ second victim. After bringing up the 300 for the invitation team, Harvey was caught on the boundary by Marcus Trescothick.

Bad light brings England tour match to a close after Vaughan hundred

England’s last match before the start of the Ashes series on Thursday came to a somewhat gloomy end as a draw in Brisbane just before four o’clock local time with the light deteriorating and storm clouds gathering

Ralph Dellor04-Nov-2002England’s last match before the start of the Ashes series on Thursday came to a somewhat gloomy end as a draw in Brisbane just before four o’clock local time with the light deteriorating and storm clouds gathering. It could be said that these clouds were not only meteorological with the news that Darren Gough has received yet another setback to his recovery from knee problems, but a bright ray of sunshine came blazing through with Michael Vaughan’s innings of 127 in his first innings since knee surgery.England set out to use the final day for batting practice and reached 322 for seven when the draw was called. Vaughan was the main beneficiary for, needing time in the middle to give his knee a thorough test before the Test, he spent the entire match on the field without reporting any serious repercussions. The Yorkshireman resumed on 49 but was reprieved on a number of occasions before he reached his milestone in mid-afternoon from 169 balls with 18 fours and a six. Dropped at slip by Martin Love the previous evening when on 45, he then had let-offs from the normally brilliant Andrew Symonds when on 75 and then a sharp chance to the wicket-keeper when three short of his hundred. These escapes, however, should not detract from the value of Vaughan’s innings. Despite the form shown by his deputy, Robert Key, in earlier matches on the tour, England need a fit and in-form Vaughan at the top of the order to continue the burgeoning opening partnership with Marcus Trescothick. He lost nigthwatchman Matthew Hoggard in the first over of the morning when he was caught behind by a diving Wayne Seccombe off Mike Kasprowicz without adding to his score. That, in itself, was no bad thing as it allowed the recognised batsmen time in the middle.Mark Butcher was perhaps in the most need of this, but twice came close to being run out in the early stages of his innings. Butcher saw Vaughan go to his fifty and appeared to be on course to join him. He had scores of 0,7,29 and 7 in his previous four innings on tour, but had reached 45 when he edged the first ball after lunch, bowled by Ashley Noffke, and was caught behind.Nasser Hussain has been in rather more convincing form, but he lifted a drive against off-spinner Nathan Hauritz when he had 28 and was the victim of a diving catch in the deep by Kasprowicz when he had 28. He had hit five fours in his stay to suggest that his game is still in good order.Vaughan went next, lbw to Hauritz, and the off-spinner picked up his third wicket when John Crawley edged to Stuart Law at slip just before tea. Crawley’s unconvincing innings must leave his place in the Test side in some jeopardy.Andrew Flintoff also failed, edging Lee Carseldine to Jimmy Maher at slip when on 3 to give the medium pacer his first first-class wicket, but Alec Stewart was on 30 with Ashley Giles 7 not out when the bad light intervened.

West Ham turn down Bertrand transfer

Writing on Twitter, journalist Jack Rosser of the Evening Standard has lifted the lid on a GSB call with his 9-word West Ham transfer revelation involving Ryan Bertrand.

The Lowdown: West Ham line up new defenders?

The defensive department is one key area of the pitch West Ham have been touted to reinforce this transfer window.

Centre-backs appear mainly on the agenda, with a recent Claret & Hugh report stating the Irons are keen for new bodies in that position.

Former defender Fabian Balbuena has also just departed, adding to West Ham’s need for a centre-half replacement, but the club could also look to strengthen in the full-back positions.

Junior Firpo, for example, has been linked with a move to east London as West Ham keen tabs on new defenders.

The Latest: Rosser lifts lid on GSB call involving Bertrand…

Now, writing on Twitter, journalist Rosser of the Evening Standard has lifted the lid on a GSB call involving former Southampton left-back Bertrand.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-2/” title=”West Ham latest!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Englishman has now agreed to join Leicester City upon the expiry of his Saints contract but West Ham apparently had the chance to make a move – with Rosser dropping the 9-word claim ‘West Ham turned down the chance to sign him’.

West Ham had been backed to exploit the free agent market by reliable club insider ExWHUemployee as a useful tool, especially given the club’s financial difficulties due to coronavirus.

Alas, it appears Bertrand wasn’t worth the effort in that regard.

The Verdict: Good call?

Bertrand was a mainstay under Ralph Hasenhuttl during his last season on the south coast, where he started 29 Premier League games.

During that time, he made the third-most tackles per 90 on average (2.1) out of any Southampton player with over 20 appearances (WhoScored), so we believe he could have been an astute back up option for West Ham – especially on a free deal.

You could of course make an argument that the 31-year-old would’ve been a quick fix to bolster left-back position and hardly a long term solution, but with barely any fees involved, the Irons had little to lose financially.

Fulham interested in Harry Wilson

Fulham are interested in a deal to bring Harry Wilson to Craven Cottage this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Goal, who claimed that the Cottagers are among a number of clubs keeping a close eye on the situation of the Liverpool winger ahead of a potential move in the summer transfer window.

The report added that Jurgen Klopp is actively looking to sell the 24-year-old this summer, with the Reds believed to be demanding a fee in the region of €15m (£13m) in order to part with the Wales international.

Silva must move

With Wilson having impressed over a number of loan spells in the Championship in the past, the news that Marco Silva is plotting a move to make the winger his first signing for the club is no great surprise.

Indeed, during a spell at Hull City back in 2017/18, the £15.3m-rated man scored seven goals, registered three assists and created three big chances for his teammates over 14 Championship appearances. These returns saw the Welshman earn an average SofaScore match rating of 7.25, ranking him as the Tigers’ second-best performer in the league.

Wilson was sent to Derby County the following year, where he scored an impressive 15 goals, provided three assists and created six big chances for his teammates over a total of 40 Championship fixtures. These metrics saw the £41,000-per-week man earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.17, ranking him as the club’s best performer in the second tier of English football.

Most recently, the winger spent a season with Cardiff City, scoring seven goals, registering 11 assists and creating 11 big chances over 37 Championship appearances for Mick McCarthy’s side.

These returns saw the man Marcelo Bielsa dubbed an “exceptional” player earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.20, ranking him as the Bluebirds’ second-best performer in the division last term.

As such, the addition of Wilson to Fulham would appear to greatly boost the Cottagers’ chances of securing an immediate return to the Premier League next year, leading us to believe that Silva should do all he can to get a deal over the line for the free kick specialist this summer.
