Ben Stokes' SPOTY glory is a PR triumph for an ever-needy sport

Populist victory confirms that cricket is still viewed with affection by the wider sporting public

Andrew Miller15-Dec-2019The signs, it has to be said, were translucent from the outset, from Gary Lineker’s introduction of cricket’s man of the moment as the “main award-winner” a full hour before the voting was due to open, to the presence at the ceremony in Aberdeen of the man himself – kept back from England’s tour of South Africa on a supremely well-founded hunch. And sure enough – cue tickertape and triumphant chords – Ben Stokes duly became cricket’s fifth winner of the prestigious BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award, following in the footsteps of Jim Laker, David Steele and – rather more tellingly – each of the two other great allrounders whose feats are synonymous with an unforgettable summer of English cricket, Ian Botham in 1981 and Andrew Flintoff in 2005.You could tell from Stokes’ emotional acceptance speech that this accolade was a big deal personally. He’s been to the brink and back in an extraordinary two years – a fact that he graciously addressed head-on as he thanked both his agent Neil Fairbrother for standing by him through Bristol, and for his wife Clare for being there throughout – including through some more recent tabloid moments that come with the celebrity territory that he now occupies. But what will it mean to Stokes beyond the sportsman’s initial buzz of victory? As other recent winners, Andy Murray (three times) and Lewis Hamilton (in 2014) can attest, it’s one thing to win the biggest prizes that your sport has to offer, but there is something distinctly gratifying about capping all that with a public vote of acceptance – especially when, for whatever reason, your very personality has previously divided opinion. But, for the rest of us – especially regular sports-fans who get their kicks from on-field antics and aren’t especially enamoured by SPOTY’s focus on X-Factor-style “journeys” – why should we care about this show, especially now, 65 years after inception, that it has begun to resemble less a review of the year than an annual festival of diminishing broadcasting rights? It’s a question that Stokes’ team-mates weren’t especially forthcoming in answering either, as they gathered round in their team-room in Johannesburg to watch the crowning moment. Leaning back on a beanbag at the front of the room, Sam Curran’s near-perfect impression of a performing seal epitomised the “yeah! But meh…” vibe that SPOTY generally exudes.Curran and his team-mates were quietly delighted, for sure, but jump-around-the-room-high-fiving-like-a-Jamie-Vardy-title-party delighted? Not so much. It’s safe to say that the actual feats with which Stokes secured this festive bauble – at Lord’s in July and at Headingley a month later – were rather more rapturously received. However, a standing camera in the corner of Tom Harrison’s living room might have captured rather more dramatic #scenes.ESPNcricinfo LtdBecause, for Harrison, the ECB’s chief executive, this moment of populist palanquin-ery arguably represents the most complete moment of triumph of an extraordinarily golden sporting summer. The return of cricket to front-and-centre billing on the BBC – and not just through Stokes himself, but through a trilogy of triumphs, Team of the Year and Sporting Moment of the Year too – is the final leg-up that the sport needed before its emotional return to the nation’s bosom in 2020, the final pep-talk-before-the-hot-date that a desperately needy sport was angling for, as it dares to dream that it can be loved again by more people than just its die-hard supporters. For cricket will be back on the BBC next summer – albeit in the guise of ten Hundred matches, a brace of T20 internationals and a raft of women’s fixtures – which is not exactly the type of banquet that will fill a SPOTY montage by the time next year’s ceremony comes around. In fact, it was revealing that, having at least forked out for some of the key highlights this year (2013, I’m looking at you…) the producers opted to pad out Stokes’ moment with footage from a Red Bull advert. The cupboard really is bare these days. But at least this evening’s ceremony was ultimate proof that people care – arguably even more proof than was gleaned from the 4.5 million viewers who flipped over to Channel 4 at the completion of the Wimbledon final this summer. It’s one thing to channel-surf and have an event thrumming along in the background, it’s quite another to go to the effort of finding your BBC login and actually placing a vote. Just ask Lab … actually, let’s not go there.Either way, it is easy to sneer about the relevance of SPOTY – and cricket’s fans have done so on an annual basis for the past 14 years of free-to-air banishment. But at the end of a summer that simply couldn’t have gone better for England’s administrators (yes, the team could have won the Ashes, but any marketeer worth his salt would have traded a routine win for the sort of timeless jeopardy that Stokes served up at Headingley) the sport’s main man, and more than a few of the supporting cast too, have been handed another prime-time, free-to-air moment of triumph. And let’s not under-estimate the importance of household names in sport. In 2014, thanks to the BBC’s coverage of the Winter Olympics, Lizzy Yarnold earned a nomination for sliding down a mountain on a tea-tray (for all that she slid exceptionally well). Whereas Moeen Ali, squirrelled away behind Sky’s paywall, did not, despite spinning England to victory in a come-from-behind Test series against India.ALSO READ: From the bank clerk to Botham – cricket’s previous SPOTY winnersSimilarly Formula 1, golf (through The Open), show-jumping and darts have all been better represented on the SPOTY podium that cricket since Flintoff’s win in 2005. Ian Bell (2013) and James Anderson (2018) have both been nominated in recent years, but without any expectation of harvesting anything close to enough votes. But now cricket’s back, and therefore all fans of the sport are obliged to leave their SPOTY cynicism to one side, and sing the ceremony to the rafters. Yes, we really are that fickle, but it’s been a long and fruitless wait in the shadows. And while it does seem random that that famous TV-camera trophy has been claimed by more racing drivers than even footballers down the years, it’s rare that the winner has not been responsible for an indelible moment that makes his or her chosen sport proud.Leaving aside Steele’s victory in 1975, which was Jack Leach-esque in its everyman attributes, it’s fair to say that Laker’s match in 1956, Botham’s Ashes in 1981, Flintoff’s Ashes in 2005, and Stokes’ summer of 2019 all share a shorthand that will echo down the ages. And, moreover, this latest addition to the annals will ripple into next summer too. Suddenly, Northern Superchargers versus Manchester Originals won’t seem quite so lacking in context to the casual sporting public. Especially once Stokes, Eoin Morgan, Jason Roy and Jofra Archer (last seen lolling on Jonathan Ross’s sofa) have done a few more of the BBC’s light-entertainment rounds to build on this World Cup win among sports PR triumphs.

Fabrizio Romano: Man City have signed new teenager ahead of "top clubs"

Manchester City have added another teenage gem to the club following a new update from transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

The Citizens are gearing up for another busy end to the season, with Pep Guardiola’s side still looking to win the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League for a second successive season.

Guardiola has played down the chances of another treble, though, recently saying:

"This is a fairy tale, it's more complicated than that. We have a 99.99% possibility that we are not going to win the treble because never, never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever has anyone done it. If it was easy, another team – Manchester United in that time – would do it again. It's not easy. Everything is so difficult in this business, what we did in the past doesn't guarantee anything."

It looks set to be a dramatic few months on the pitch, and away from the pitch, Etihad officials have been hard at work adding to their academy ranks.

£250,000-a-week star has played his last game for Man City

It could be another busy summer at the Etihad.

Senior signings could also be made in the summer, such as Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite, Bayern Munich duo Jamal Musiala and Joshua Kimmich and West Ham star Lucas Paqueta.

However, when it comes to potential stars of the future, City have secured another teenage gem, this time at full-back.

Man City sign young full-back

According to Romano, who took to X on Wednesday morning, Man City have signed Jayden Lienou from Everton. The left-back, who is 15 years of age, is a "new" City player, with those in Manchester beating "two" top English clubs to a deal.

Lienou is already a Wales U16 international but can actually represent Cameroon or England, should he progress and hit the heights at senior level. He will seemingly go straight into City’s academy, and who knows, in years to come, we could see the likes of Lienou, Sullivan, Whisker and Gorman break into the first-team setup, following in the footsteps of Phil Foden, Rico Lewis and Oscar Bobb.

Gio Reyna 'has no future' at Borussia Dortmund – with USMNT star in line for potential Mason Greenwood link-up at Marseille

USMNT star Gio Reyna is being tipped to leave Borussia Dortmund this summer and could link up with Mason Greenwood at Marseille.

Reyna deemed surplus to requirements at DortmundExpected to move on in the summerMarseille could reignite interest in USMNT starWHAT HAPPENED?

Reyna's time at Dortmund could be set to end this summer after five years with the Bundesliga side. The USMNT star has "no future" at the club, with Julian Brandt and talented youngster Kjell Watjen now above him in the pecking order, as reported by . Dortmund are also keen to bring in Rayan Cherki from Lyon which would further limit Reyna's opportunities. A move to Marseille is a potential option, with the Ligue 1 side having been previously interested in landing the 21-year-old.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Reyna only made one Bundesliga start for Dortmund last season and was shipped out on loan to Nottingham Forest in January. However, the youngster failed to make any impression in the Premier League and Dortmund are keen to offload him permanently. Marseille were interested in Reyna before he joined Forest and may be willing to reignite their interest. The Ligue 1 side have already made a splash in the transfer market this summer by bringing in Greenwood from Manchester United in a deal worth €31.6 million (£27m/$34m).

WHAT REYNA HAS SAID

Reyna has spoken about his future plans and made it clear he wants regular game time next season. He told in June: "I just want to go somewhere that is at the highest possible level, but still play an important role, get consistent minutes and be an important player for any team, whether it’s at Dortmund or somewhere else. I’m just looking for the right fit for me, playing at a high level and a club that wants me — where I feel valued."

Reyna has not travelled with the Dortmund squad for their pre-season tour of Asia but is due to link up with the club in Japan on July 22 following his Copa America exploits with the USMNT. A summer move for the American does now look to be on the cards, but it still remains to be seen where Reyna will play his football in the 2024-25 campaign.

Man Utd messed up selling £9m star who’s now worth more than Mount

Manchester United have conducted poor business in recent times, with the Red Devils splashing out over £700m on new signings since the 2020/21 campaign.

Only a handful of the arrivals, signed off by the Glazers, have been successes, with the likes of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martínez tightening up the United defence, after a few years of defensive errors.

However, signings such as Antony, Donny Van De Beek and Jadon Sancho haven't worked out, with the trio costing the club over £180m – with two of whom currently away from Old Trafford, reflecting their lack of impact at the club.

Man United's Jadon Sancho

Casemiro is another player who has failed to live up to expectations despite a glittering career before his move to England. The Brazilian cost the Red Devils £70m, on £350k-per-week, the highest of anyone at the club.

The club could've avoided the big-money signing of Casemiro had they kept hold of a youngster, with the former United man now excelling elsewhere in the Premier League.

James Garner's stats for Manchester United

After joining the United Academy at the age of eight, James Garner had a successful progression from the club's youth ranks at Carrington, before eventually making his first-team debut for his boyhood club back in February 2019.

17-year-old Garner replaced Fred in the 90th minute of the 3-1 Premier League win at Crystal Palace, before subsequently signing an extension just a month later.

He would make his Europa League debut in October 2019, before leaving the club on loan to join Championship side Watford ahead of the 2020/21 season.

Garner failed to receive the game time he needed to progress, with his deal being terminated to allow him to join Nottingham Forest – a move that would allow him to flourish, with former Premier League goalkeeper Paul Robinson lauding the midfielder as "exceptional".

He quickly settled into life at the City Ground, scoring a screamer on the final day against Preston, before re-joining the Reds on loan once more for the 2021/22 season.

The midfielder was a crucial part of Forest's promotion-winning side, featuring 41 times and scoring on four occasions with Garner stealing his claim for a regular first-team place at Old Trafford.

However, Erik ten Hag and the board decided to sell the now 23-year-old after just seven United outings, with Garner subsequently going on to have a fabulous campaign in the Premier League this season.

James Garner's market value in 2024

The youngster joined Everton for a fee in the region of £9m in 2022, with Garner jumping at the opportunity to play regular football in England's top flight.

His displays in midfield under Sean Dyche this campaign have seen his market value soar to £25.7m as per CIES Football Observatory – a figure that is higher than United's £55m signing Mason Mount, whose value has dropped to just £17m less than a year after he arrived at Old Trafford.

The "phenomenal" talent, as dubbed by Trevor Sinclair, has featured 27 times in the Premier League this season, with the youngster remarkably producing better stats than Casemiro in multiple key areas.

It's undeniable that the Brazilian is more suited as a ball-winning midfielder than the Everton man, but given Garner's age and talent, it seems as though the Red Devils made a mistake in allowing him to leave the club.

Casemiro is coming to the end of his career, with United needing to replace him in the years to come. They will undoubtedly splash big money on a replacement, but they could've saved themselves a lot of money had they stuck by Garner and allowed him to flourish at his boyhood club.

Qais Ahmad's magical spell spins Hobart Hurricanes to victory

Riley Meredith also played a vital role in defending a small total on a slow pitch in extremely hot conditions in Alice Springs

Daniel Brettig20-Dec-2019Afghanistan’s Qais Ahmad delivered a magical spell of wrist spin to sink the Sydney Sixers on an enervating day in Alice Springs and hand the Hobart Hurricanes an opening victory in the BBL.The Sixers had appeared well placed to run down the Hurricanes’ mediocre 9 for 129, but their innings followed a similar pattern to that of Hobart as a strong start was squandered in increasingly difficult batting conditions. Ahmad’s brilliance, including three wickets in four balls in his second over, was ably supported by the speed of Riley Meredith and a pair of vital wickets to Simon Milenko.D’Arcy Short had given the Hurricanes a decent platform after Ben McDermott won the toss and chose to bat, only to see Ben Manenti, Sean Abbott and Ben Dwarshuis combine usefully for the Sixers. They had seemed happy with their looming chase, but reckoned without Ahmad, who already looks to be one of the most watchable figures in the BBL this season.Short’s stay at the creaseOn a slow, dry Traeger Park surface in temperatures above 40C, Short made the most of the early overs when the new ball was hard and provided value for shots despite a somewhat spongy outfield. When timing the ball sweetly, Short’s languid follow through can recall some of golf’s more elegant shotmakers, and this innings offered similar aesthetic pleasures to spectators and television viewers. The Hurricanes captain McDermott was content to give Short the strike while pushing the ball around and not finding the boundary, and at 1 for 44 after the powerplay and then 1 for 76 in the 11th over there was a more than decent platform. However, the off-breaks of Mantenti accounted for McDermott and then Short in the space of eight runs, opening things up for the Sixers seam bowlers.Abbott goes to workTaking the ball in the middle overs, Abbott and Dwarshuis continued to clamp down on the scoring rate as wickets began to fall more regularly against the softening ball and slowing pitch. Dwarshuis enjoyed the notable double of David Miller and the Australian selector-in-waiting George Bailey, while Abbott pinned James Faulkner lbw in a rare straightforward lbw so far for the domestic season. Both pacemen changed their pace and banged the ball into a slowish surface to good constricting effect.Tom Curran came back for the closing overs as the innings tightened still further for the Hurricanes, and the only boundary in the final five overs came from the bat of Ahmad, who hoisted a straightish delivery to within a couple centimetres of going for six.Vince, Philippe clear the ropesJames Vince and Josh Philippe had no such concerns early on, and there was something very similar to how Short started the afternoon in the way the Sixers skated away to 37 from the first four overs. A couple of inside out sixes over cover from Vince off Clive Rose bore the aristocratic style that has made him a part of the England set-up for a number of years, while Philippe looked in tune to follow-up his dismantling of the Perth Scorchers at the SCG on Wednesday night. However, after Ahmad’s early direct hit from mid-on had accounted for Daniel Hughes, neither Vince nor Philippe were able to carry on from this promising start. The combination of high pace and artful wrist spin was to provide a bewitching passage of play for the Hurricanes.Meredith turns momentum, Ahmad turns the screwIt started when Meredith’s entry to the attack brought the first plays and misses and miscues of the innings, as he swiftly pushed the speed gun beyond 145kph. His second over brought an off-cutter change-up and a miscalculation by Vince, who was through the shot too early and bowled. Ahmad’s introduction brought another key wicket when Moises Henriques’ big drive found a lurking Short, and after Milenko struck twice in an over when he replaced Meredith, Qais proceeded to put on a wrist spinner’s clinic after the strategic timeout.First ball, Curran was beaten completely by a sharp leg break that pitched on leg stump before zipping back to hit the top of off, bringing out Ahmad’s ebullient front flip celebration. Next ball Sean Abbott was drawn out of his crease by another leg break and alertly stumped by McDermott, and after Dwarshuis averted the hat-track, Qais moved around the wicket and spun a third perfect leggie through a very large gate between bat and pad. That spell was more or less that, even though Jordan Silk and Mantenti tried in vain to salvage something from the last two wickets.

There has been talk of a “celeb-fest” being enjoyed at those matches, but Brady is unlikely to make a trip over the Atlantic alongside Reynolds and McElhenney. That is because the seven-time Super Bowl winner has signed a lucrative analyst deal with Fox Sports.

BCB anti-corruption unit completes investigation into Krishmar Santokie no-ball

The Sylhet Thunder fast bowler overstepped by an unusually large distance on the opening day of the BPL

Celtic keen to sign "special" 23 y/o attacker compared to Kevin de Bruyne

Celtic are thought to be eyeing up a move to sign an attacker at the top of his game, according to a new report.

Celtic transfer rumours

The Hoops are currently involved in a tight Scottish Premiership title race with rivals Rangers, with the pair set to face off this weekend in what could prove to be a title decider.

However, off the pitch, those at Celtic Park appear to be making preparations ahead of the summer transfer window. The club have been fairly active across the course of the current campaign when it comes to permanent signings, however, Brendan Rodgers recently admitted that the club could be “braver” with their additions.

“I would go with supporters thinking we could maybe be a little bit braver in terms of bringing in another level of player. But that’s up to me to try and fix that over the course of my time here.

“You look at the strategy here and you have to be careful because in some ways it has worked. You bring in players for a minimal fee and then they go out and make the club a lot of money.

“What I want to hopefully balance in my time here is that we can still do that, because it is an important part of the modern game. But we also want to be brave enough to hang our hat on a ready-made player.”

The Hoops are “back in the market”.

ByCharlie Smith Mar 27, 2024

Celtic are reportedly looking to sign at least three players ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, with a new goalkeeper, winger and striker being prioritised.

One “ready-made” target could be Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher to replace the retiring Joe Hart, whereas Blackburn Rover attacking midfielder Sammie Szmodics has also been linked with a move to Glasgow.

Another attacking midfielder who appears to be catching the eye at Parkhead is Eduard Spertsyan.

Celtic keen on Eduard Spertsyan

According to reports in Russia, relayed by The Daily Record, Celtic are eyeing up a summer move for Spertsyan. The Krasnodar star was previously linked with a £13m move to Newcastle United, however, his asking price has dropped, which could come as a boost for those in Scotland.

The attacking midfielder can also play out wide and appears to be at the top of his game with a career-high Transfermarkt valuation. He also appears keen on a move to a new country, with Spertsyan recently saying: "Yes I want to play in Europe soon, but I know I’ve got to fight and work for it.

"I don’t want to leave here by running away or with a helicopter! I like being at Krasnodar, but I want to try to go to Europe while I have the chance, I don’t know what can happen there. I’m confident and I think I can achieve even bigger goals.”

The 23-year-old is an Armenia international and has been with Krasnodar all his career, making 99 senior appearances, scoring 30 goals and registering 23 assists.

He was also previously linked with a move to Ajax, with former director of football Sven Mislintat saying that Spertsyan could have been their Kevin de Bruyne, a “special player”.

“It wasn’t about his abilities but that he plays in Russia. He could’ve been at Ajax similar to what Kevin De Bruyne is at Man City. A special player, you can’t find someone like him for this amount of money."

Celtic could therefore be the ones to benefit in the summer, making this one to watch.

Chelsea could sell £425k-p/w worth of talent to fund Osimhen move

There is little doubt that this summer, Chelsea need to sign a striker. They have been poor in front of goal, creating plenty of chances thanks to the likes of Cole Palmer, but have simply failed to score enough.

In total, the Blues have created 99 big chances in the Premier League this season, but have missed 59 of them, as per Sofascore. Only Liverpool with 66, Manchester City with 64 and Brentford with 60 have missed more big chances than Chelsea this season.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino has trialled several different options upfront. Nicolas Jackson has done reasonably well in his debut Premier League campaign, scoring ten Premier League goals so far.

Christopher Nkunku has been ravaged by injuries in his first season at Stamford Bridge and has barely played this season. The likes of Palmer have also played up front at times but is having great success elsewhere that it seems a poor decision to to play him at centre-forward.

The man Chelsea are reportedly targeting to lead their line next season is Victor Osimhen. However, according to Goal.com, the Nigerian forward is also wanted by PSG, who are reportedly close to signing him for £103m.

Certainly, if Chelsea can sign Osimhen, he would be a major improvement to their side. He is having another wonderful season, with 13 goals and three assists in just 20 Serie A games so far this season, backing up his superb 2022/23 campaign when he scored 26 goals in the league.

Osimhen is a classic centre-forward, who has brilliant instinct in front of goal, which shows in the goals he has scored this season.

According to Fbref, his 7.12 touches in the opposition penalty area are some of the best in Europe, placing him in the top 6% among fellow strikers. He also ranks high for shot-creating actions, with 0.55 per 90 minutes placing him in the top 3%. He is a player who will get you goals or create opportunities in the box, exactly what Chelsea have been missing.

At just 25 years old, Osimhen is a perfect age profile for Chelsea to build around. He could well go on to be their striker for the next seven years and take them back to the highest of top-level European football.

Victor Osimhen

However, the big issue for Chelsea is raising the funds to purchase Osimhen. According to reports, there are three players that the club is willing to move on to afford the striker next summer, who are on a combined £425k-per-week, according to Capology.

1 Conor Gallagher

Conor Gallagher for Chelsea

Despite a key role played by Conor Gallagher in the heart of the Chelsea midfield this season, he could well leave the Blues, which would help them fund a move for Osimhen. According to Sky Sports Dharmesh Sheth, via GiveMeSport, Chelsea might have to move Gallagher on due to tight FFP restrictions.

As per Caught Offside, Gallagher is of interest to Tottenham, and the north London side could move for the England international should he leave Stamford Bridge in the summer. However, it could be an expensive deal, with Gallagher valued at around £68m according to CIES Football Observatory.

Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher celebrates.

In selling Gallagher, not only would Chelsea lose a leader, but also a midfield engine. He is wonderful out of possession and is a relentless presser. According to Fbref, Gallagher wins 0.53 final third tackles, placing him in the top 3% of midfielders in Europe. On the ball, Gallagher’s final third creativity is underrated, and the 1.51 key passes he makes on average per game ranks him in the 80th percentile.

Should Chelsea sell Gallagher, they would be losing a very versatile midfielder, able to play in a box-to-box role or as a number 10. Regardless, FFP may leave them with no choice, and it would also help as they look to sign Osimhen.

2 Trevoh Chalobah

Trevoh Chalobah

Another Cobham product, Trevoh Chalobah, is linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge next summer, too. In an interview with GiveMeSport, journalist Ben Jacobs explained that the defender’s future is “in his hands”.

Chalobah actually turned down the chance to join Nottingham Forest last summer according to Fabrizio Romano, in a deal worth £25m, with the player favouring a move to Bayern Munich, although that deal also collapsed.

Chelsea centre-back Trevoh Chalobah

24-year-old Chalobah is a versatile defender, who can play anywhere across the backline. He is superb on the ball, and according to Fbref, the 65.45 passes he completed per game places him in the top 14% of centre-backs on the continent.

Not only that, Chalobah is a good carrier, and averages one progressive carry per game, which puts him in the top 20%, and 0.55 successful take-ons, ranking him in the top 7% of centre-backs.

Chalobah’s versatility could be something that Chelsea miss, as they can call upon him to do several tasks to a high level. However, it may well be the case he also moves on to help with FFP and to fund the signing of Osimhen.

3 Romelu Lukaku

Saudi Arabian side Al-Ittihad are allegedly interested in taking Belgium’s record goalscorer Romelu Lukaku off Chelsea’s hands this summer on a permanent deal.

Since his big-money return to the club in 2021, Lukaku’s career at Chelsea took a nosedive and he never really found his feet at Stamford Bridge. The bulky striker scored just 15 goals during his second spell at the club, before being loaned out to Inter and, this season, Roma.

The Belgian is having a better campaign in front of goal in Rome. In 40 games, Lukaku has scored 18 goals so far, including seven in ten Europa League games, with four assists along the way.

Romelu Lukaku

According to CIES Football Observatory, Lukaku is now valued at just £25.6m, over £70m less than what Chelsea paid for him in the first place. Selling the striker certainly seems like a good piece of business, even if they only recoup a fraction of the fee they paid for him when they brought him back to the club in 2021.

Certainly, Chelsea could well look to move Gallagher, Chalobah and Lukaku on this summer, in the hope of bringing in Osimhen. There is no doubt the 25-year-old would improve their side, and Todd Boehly needs all the funds possible to sign him ahead of PSG.
