The post was swiftly taken down by the English midfielder, but not before eagle-eyed fans noticed the alteration.

As a Nike ambassador, Mbappe was removed due to the campaign’s association with adidas, Real Madrid's official kit sponsor. Despite Mbappe's omission, Eduardo Camavinga, another Nike-sponsored player, was featured in the campaign, raising further questions about the rationale behind the decision.

Dhaka Premier League 'not possible' this year, can only start in January – Khaled Mahmud

The postponement of DPL is another setback for professional cricketers who rely on leagues for income

ESPNcricinfo staff20-Oct-2020BCB director and Abahani Limited coach Khaled Mahmud has said it is “not possible” to go ahead with the 2019-20 season of Dhaka Premier League, which was put on pause after six matches in March due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The board, according to him, is looking at January next year for a possible window, but said they might consider postponing it further if the DPL clubs show reluctance to play should West Indies’ tour of Bangladesh go ahead, which would make several of their main players unavailable for the league.Mahmud said that the BCB wants to complete a proposed T20 tournament by mid-December, after which they have to give clubs the time to prepare, especially under pandemic protocols, which would be a challenge given that DPL is a 12-team List-A competition.”It is not possible this year,” Mahmud said at a press-conference on Monday. “We can only start in January next year. We are already committed to the T20 tournament, which starts in November and will only finish in the middle of December. We have to arrange training facilities for the clubs, and allow them to get the players back to Dhaka, so I think we can only start around the first week of January.”If West Indies are touring in January, we will run the DPL side-by-side. Those playing international cricket won’t be playing domestic cricket. It has happened before. We cannot control every single thing. As simple as that. If the clubs decide they can’t play without those players, then we have to think about the league after West Indies’ tour. We have such a busy schedule next year that it is unlikely that we will get such a luxury. Perhaps we have some time in March or April.”The postponement of DPL is yet another setback for the majority of the country’s professional cricketers who rely on the leagues for their income. In a typical cricket season, the four-tiered Dhaka league (DPL and first, second and third division) and two first-class tournaments are played, along with the BPL.Mahmud said that organising and maintaining a 12-team biobubble is a major challenge, as the BCB has so far only experienced it with three teams in the ongoing BCB President’s Cup tournament.”It is a very complicated, difficult thing. We have three teams in the biobubble currently. Next we will have five or six teams in the biobubble for the T20 tournament. There are 12 teams in the Dhaka Premier League with at least 20 in each side, including the coaches and managers. The big question is where to put up around 270 people in one place.”Even if we hold a single league, there is a lot of matches. So we have to figure out how much time we will need. We are in talks with BKSP about the biobubble, but given how the clubs are such big stakeholders, their decision also matters,” Mahmud said.Mahmud suggested the BCB could give out loans to clubs although he was confident that most of them can manage the costs for the 2019-20 tournament.”BCB is positive because a lot of the players’ financial future is at stake. I think the Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis (CCDM) meeting is important. We have to give utmost importance to the players’ well-being. If one player gets infected – God forbid – it can spread through the team.”The BCB can arrange for a loan for the clubs, who I believe can manage much of their funds. Everything is running now, unlike a few months ago when it was uncertain. I know it will be tough on the clubs but not so tough that they can’t run the teams for the DPL.”

England 1-1 Denmark: Player ratings as Southgate’s men labour to a draw

Euro 2024 has been a fabulous tournament. We've seen long-range goals, we've seen late drama, we've seen scintillating attacking football from some of the continent's minnows. Then, there's England.

The Three Lions may have four points on the board but Gareth Southgate's men have looked passive, they lack urgency, they lack energy and they lack direction.

This is a side boasting Champions League winner Jude Bellingham, Premier League Player of the Season Phil Foden, 44-goal Harry Kane and £105m Declan Rice.

Yet, as England picked up a point, drawing 1-1 with Denmark, it was a tired-looking display. Truth be told, they looked like one of the worst teams at the tournament.

There was a distinct lack of tactical cohesion, no pressing and minimal direction. It might seem like an overreaction but they are meant to be one of the favourites for the trophy, they should be doing better.

So, who was the worst of the lot and who actually stood out? Here are our player ratings.

GK – Jordan Pickford – 6

The Everton goalkeeper didn't have a whole heap of action to be involved in. Beaten by a brilliant strike from Morten Hjulmand for the equaliser.

RB – Kyle Walker – 7

One of a few players who can hold his head high after that performance. The Manchester City star played a key role in the goal, galloping forward to supply Kane's opener.

CB – John Stones – 6

There weren't very many notable moments good or bad from the Man City defender but he does have to improve with his distribution.

CB – Marc Guehi – 7

Caught in possession at one time but made a wonderful recovering tackle to rescue his team. He has been one of the best England players in Germany so far.

LB – Kieran Trippier – 6

Defended valiantly down the left-hand side but still looks awkward playing out of position. Didn't do enough to push the Three Lions forward in attack.

CM – Declan Rice – 5

He was magnificent for Arsenal last season but this was one of his worst performances in the last year or so. Struggled to get his passing game going which meant England could rarely get out of their own half.

CM – Trent Alexander-Arnold – 4

We've seen enough, Southgate's midfield experiment with Trent now has to stop. Dragged off moments after the break having failed to offer much defensively or offensively.

CAM – Jude Bellingham – 5

A really poor outing from the Madrid man. Looked brilliant against Serbia but failed, like many England players, to get a footing in the match.

RW – Bukayo Saka – 6

Had his moments and was one of very few players in white to get in behind the Denmark defence. Ultimately failed to produce many moments though.

LW – Phil Foden – 5

Another of England's star players, he just simply doesn't look like the same player when playing for his country. Struck the post with a fizzing effort from outside of the box but that was about as good as it got.

ST – Harry Kane – 6

Better than Serbia but still lots of questions to be asked about his game. He scored the goal but was dropping way too deep. Only had one touch in the penalty area and was substituted for Ollie Watkins.

Substitutes: Conor Gallagher – 5

Second game in a row replacing Alexander-Arnold. Got booked quickly and struggled to get to grips with the match.

Ollie Watkins – 7

A really positive cameo from the Aston Villa man. Incredibly willing to run in behind and gave the Danes something different to think about.

Eberechi Eze – 5

A good change from Southgate as the Crystal Palace star replaced Foden on the left but like Gallagher struggled to get on the ball and impact proceedings.

Jarrod Bowen – 5

Looked a bit brighter than Eze but again, like much of the attack, lacked space to carve out opportunities.

Javier Mascherano reveals why Lionel Messi would have been 'one of the best defenders in the world' as he opens up on training with superstar at Barcelona

Lionel Messi would be one of the "best defenders in the world" had the Argentina icon opted to spend his career at the back, says Javier Mascherano.

Messi is widely regarded as the best player of all-time due to his incredible achievements as an attacker. However, his former Barcelona and Argentina team-mate Mascherano says he was incredible when it came to keeping others away from goal.

AdvertisementAFPWHAT MASCHERANO SAID

"If Messi were a defender, he would perhaps be one of the best defenders in the world," he said in an interview for "It is impossible to get past him. Sometimes, at Barcelona we played one on one and it was impossible to get past him.

"We had no chance against him. Sometimes, attackers know how to defend. Leo defended very well. He was very fast and when you tried to dribble past him it was impossible."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Mascherano and Messi played together for eight years at Barcelona and were in the national team together for 13, and the ex-Liverpool midfielder has given another story to sum up the Inter Miami hero's magic.

"In Barcelona we did a short tournament in a training session with three teams: five victories and you were the champion," he said. "He decided to end the training session early, so he scored five goals for the team to win and the training session ended."

The 37-year-old has scored 17 goals in 18 MLS matches for Inter Miami this season. Before he returns to action in the United States, though, he will feature in Argentina's World Cup qualifying match against Venezuela.

Everton could sign Calvert-Lewin replacement who’s "ridiculously talented"

Despite excelling defensively under boss Sean Dyche during the 2023/24 Premier League campaign, Everton have struggled within the attacking third to produce quality on a regular basis.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Abdoulaye Doucoure both notched up seven goals in the league, but endured droughts throughout the campaign, with the latter failing to score for over four months – a period that saw the club pick up just one win in 15 outings.

The Toffees only managed a tally of 40 goals in their 38 Premier League matches, with only bottom club Sheffield United producing a total fewer than Dyche’s side.

Outgoings will undoubtedly be the focus this summer to boost their PSR standing, but the club should also target a forward, with the Toffees already eyeing up one player to improve the goalscoring situation at Goodison Park.

Everton interested in signing £20m talent this summer

According to reports in France, Everton have entered the race to sign Marseille forward Iliman Ndiaye this summer, in an attempt to improve their lack of goals in recent months.

Iliman Ndiaye in action for Senegal during the World Cup.

The 24-year-old only joined the French side for £20m from Sheffield United last summer after their promotion back to the Premier League, but he could be set for a return to England just one year after leaving.

He scored three goals and registered three assists in Ligue 1 last season, a respectable return, but it may not be enough to secure his future at the club.

The journalist claims that Dyche’s side have already tabled an offer for the Senegalese forward, with the club potentially able to land their target who they’ve eyed for many years.

Ndiaye’s potential move could allow the club to move one forward on, following recent interest from fellow Premier League sides for his signature despite his poor recent form.

Why Ndiaye could allow Dyche to forget about Calvert-Lewin

The Englishman has been a great servant for the Toffees after signing for the Blues for £1.5m back in the summer of 2016, scoring 68 times in 247 appearances for the club.

However, given their recent troubles with PSR, they may be forced to offload him, with Newcastle United now looking likely to acquire his services.

Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Ndiaye would be a completely different option than the 27-year-old, but one that can take the Toffees to the next level, with his excellent ability with the ball at his feet.

Although the Everton man has contributed with more goals and assists in 2023/24, Ndiaye has dominated with his all-round play, adding a new dimension to the Toffees’ attack.

The youngster has performed much better with the ball at his feet, completing two times the amount of progressive passes to his teammates, whilst also achieving a 27% better pass completion rate.

He’s also completed nearly double the amount of successful take-ons than Calvert-Lewin, an example of the quality the “ridiculously talented” forward, as dubbed by the Second Tier Podcast, possesses in the final third.

Whilst Calvert-Lewin has been an excellent servant for the club, should they receive a bid in the region of their asking price, they must allow him to depart with Ndiaye potentially the perfect replacement.

Marseille midfielderIliman Ndiaye.

He’s undoubtedly a different style of centre-forward to the Toffees’ number nine, but he would flourish with the current crop of attacking players at Goodison, allowing the club to pull clear of the drop zone next season.

Rangers transfer collapses after disagreement over personal terms

Despite Rangers looking on the verge of announcing a number of new signings in the transfer market, it now appears that one deal has fallen at the final hurdle.

Rangers working fast in summer window

With Philippe Clement desperate to close the gap with Celtic next season, the Scottish Premiership runners-up are preparing deals for a number of new players.

Club who just sold their striker for £15m have now spoken to Rangers ace

The European side are eager to agree a deal for the player.

ByTom Coates Jul 3, 2024

A recent name linked with a move to Ibrox is free agent Ryan Sessegnon. The former Spurs and Fulham man has struggled with injury issues, however a move north of the border could be what he needs to get his career back on track. Despite the interest from Rangers, it appears that there will be stiff competition from other clubs for the attacking fullback's services.

Whilst a deal for Sessegnon is still in its infancy, there are a number of Rangers signings moving closer to completion. Hamza Igamane is on the brink of a move to Ibrox with just the final details needing to be ironed out before the midfielder makes a £1.7million switch from Moroccan outfit FAR Rabat.

Ryan Sessegnon for Tottenham

Reports out of Romania have also stated that Rangers' deal for Rapid Bucharest striker Albion Rrahmani is 90 per cent done although the final stages of this transfer are taking longer than expected, leading some to worry that the deal is not as close as first thought.

It is a similar story with the links between Rangers and Norwich's Kenny McLean. The story of McLean's move to Ibrox first broke last month but details of further talks have been scarce in the weeks that have followed.

With a number of Rangers' transfers hanging in the balance, the Ibrox outfit look to have seen one of these deals fall through at the eleventh hour.

Deal off as Rangers can't agree personal terms

Rangers news outlet Rangers Review have claimed that the Ibrox outfit have pulled the plug on a deal to sign Kenny McLean. Their show states that the "deal is off" after the two parties could not agree on personal terms for the midfielder.

It appears that the length of McLean's contract lied at the heart of this disagreement with the Scotland international wanting a longer contract than Rangers were willing to offer, although that is not confirmed.

Norwich midfielder Kenny McLean.

At 32 years of age, it makes sense for Rangers to not spend big on a long-term deal for the midfielder, who can also play in defence, no matter how useful he would be to Clement's side in the immediate future.

The collapse of this deal will be a difficult one for not just the Rangers fans excited to watch him play but McLean himself. The boyhood Rangers fan previously said that it "would be pretty special" to play at Ibrox one day.

Whilst McLean's move appears dead for now, the clear appetite for the transfer from both sides means that you cannot rule out the 32-year-old pulling on the famous blue shirt at some point in his career.

Imad Wasim hails Dean Jones' contribution to Karachi Kings' maiden title

Captain pays late coach tribute and thanks Wasim Akram for roles in side’s success

ESPNcricinfo staff17-Nov-2020Imad Wasim, Karachi Kings’ captain, hailed the contribution of the late Dean Jones to the franchise’s title win after they beat Lahore Qalandars to lift the Pakistan Super League trophy for the first time.Jones died suddenly in Mumbai, where he had been working as a broadcaster for the IPL, following a cardiac arrest in September at the age of 59. Having previously coached Islamabad United to two of the first three PSL titles, Jones was appointed as Karachi’s coach ahead of the fifth edition in March, which was abandoned immediately before the playoff stage due to the Covid-19 pandemic.Jones was something of a legendary figure at the PSL, usually seen writing notes in his famous red book in his team’s dugout. Karachi paid him tribute before their Qualifier against Multan Sultans, forming a ‘D’ shape on the outfield and observing a moment’s silence. They also carried a cardboard cut-out with them throughout the playoffs, with “We miss you!” emblazoned on its side.Speaking in the post-match presentation after hitting the winning runs, Imad acknowledged the contribution that Jones had made to the franchise, as well as thanking Wasim Akram – who stepped in as his replacement during the playoffs – for his role.”Dean Jones, of course, gets credit because what he taught us, very few coaches in the world can,” Imad said. “Wasim Akram, of course, deserves the trophy because he was our bowling coach, head coach, mentor and team president rolled in one. It’s an honour to captain this franchise.”ALSO READ: Babar Azam, bowlers guide Karachi Kings to maiden titleImad admitted that like his opposite number Sohail Akhtar, he had misread the pitch and would also have chosen to bat first if he had won the toss. But he said that his bowlers – in particular, the unheralded trio of Arshad Iqbal, Waqas Mahmood and Umaid Asif – had stepped up at the right time.”The way the bowlers bowled was fantastic,” he said. “We misread the pitch somewhat, too, because we wanted to bat first, too. The bounce wasn’t true, and so we varied our pace and lines, and I think our bowlers executed their plans perfectly.”We knew if Babar [Azam] put on a masterclass we could effectively put our feet up in the chase. Obviously anything can go wrong and in the end we lost a couple of wickets all of a sudden, and that’s why I’d decided to go in lower down the order, so we’d have some security at the end.”Generally, when I bowl the first over, I can get a read of the wicket. Arshad Iqbal was an emerging cricketer but he played a crucial role for us today. If the fans had been around, it would have made it even sweeter.”

Azam, who won the match award in the final, finished top of the run-scoring charts and was named player of the tournament, said that he had tried to stay as cool as possible in the middle, despite the loss of three late wickets as the Kings closed in on victory.”It’s been a great year for me, but today, I just needed to remain cool,” he said. “The team was depending on me and I needed not to panic. The wicket was slow and I wasn’t feeling the ball on the bat very well. I feel the calmer you are, the better you perform. Because sometimes the way you’ve planned things doesn’t reflect what happens out in the middle. I just knew I had to be there at the finish, and in the end we chased it with ease.”The way we started with the ball was outstanding, and we were great in the field, too. That’s the one thing you can control. I’m always looking to improve on that aspect of my game. I just think about the next game, and put the previous one out of my mind. I’m on the quest for improvement all the time, and how to deal with batting in different situations and different countries. I just try and remain positive.”Akhtar, the losing captain, admitted that his side had fallen a long way short with the bat. But having finished bottom of the group stage in each of the past four editions of the PSL, he said that reaching the final was a sign of “great progress”.”The wicket was slow, and we were at least 20 runs short today,” he said. “But getting here is a big achievement for us and represents great progress. We played excellent cricket, and everyone bought into the project. I think I’m very fortunate to be leading such a wonderful franchise. I’d love to thank our senior players, people like Ben Dunk and Mohammad Hafeez, who supported me.”

This made them the first team two win both white-ball titles in the same season, having won the 50-over Vijay Hazare Trophy as well. Incidentally, Tamil Nadu were the losing side there too.
