Arsenal have struck gold on future "legend" worth millions more than Isak

After nearly three months of stories, rumours and moves, the transfer window is finally closed, and it’s been a good summer for Arsenal.

While it could be argued that the team are still in need of a new left-winger, Andrea Berta and Co did an excellent job adding eight talented players to Mikel Arteta’s squad, including a few who have the potential to be game-changing.

However, for all the good work done by the Gunners, the talk of the window, and the biggest headline grabber over the last few weeks has been Alexander Isak.

The former Newcastle United goal machine finally got his move to Liverpool, and while it was a record-breaking one, Arsenal can be happy in the knowledge that one of their stars remains more valuable.

Isak's transfer and Arsenal's deals

While he had a reasonably slow start to life in the Premier League, Isak slowly transformed into one of the very best strikers in world football by the time Liverpool came calling for him.

Throughout his Newcastle career, the Swedish star managed to rack up a sensational tally of 62 goals and 11 assists in 109 appearances, totalling 7,977 minutes.

In other words, the 25-year-old game-changer was able to maintain an average of a goal involvement every 1.49 games or every 109.27 minutes across a three-season spell.

With numbers like that and the fact he’s such a pleasing player to watch, it’s not hard to understand why the Reds think he’s worthy of a £125m price tag and of being the most expensive signing in the league’s history.

Yet, while his move to Anfield has made the defending champions overwhelming favourites in the minds of many fans and pundits alike, Arsenal have made several top-quality additions to Arteta’s squad as well.

Viktor Gyokeres, for example, may have struggled on Sunday, but during his time with Sporting CP, he scored 97 goals and provided 28 assists in 102 appearances.

Likewise, Martin Zubimendi hasn’t necessarily hit the ground running in red and white, but he’s been one of the most sought-after midfielders in European football over the last few years and will undoubtedly come good in time.

Finally, Noni Madueke and Cristhian Mosquera looked reasonably impressive against the Reds, and, from what we’ve seen of him for Crystal Palace over the last few years, Eberechi Eze could be the man to help unlock the Gunners’ attack.

In all, the North Londoners have spent around £255m on signings this summer, and while they’ve not brought in anyone as valuable as Isak, Arteta already has a player worth millions more than him in the squad.

The Arsenal star who is worth millions more than Isak

While the club haven’t won anything with this current squad, Arsenal are blessed with an abundance of talent.

Market Movers

Football FanCast’s Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club’s star player or biggest flop worth today?

The likes of William Saliba, Declan Rice and David Raya, for example, would get into most teams around the world and have valuations to match their level of talent.

Yet, when we are talking about the most valuable player in the Gunners’ squad, the player who is worth millions more than Isak, there is one name that stands out above all others.

We are, of course, talking about the face of the club, the talisman on and off the pitch, Bukayo Saka.

The Ealing-born game-changer has transformed from promising academy product to world-class superstar in front of the adoring Emirates over the last five years or so, and his price tag more than reflects his status in the game.

According to Transfermarkt, the Gunners’ “legend in the making,” as dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig, is worth a staggering €150m, which is about £130.1m, or £5.1m more than Liverpool just paid for their new striker.

Now, there is no denying that it is an extraordinary amount of money for a still relatively young player to be worth, but based on his performances over the last few years and his importance to the North Londoners, it’s hard to argue that it’s undeserved.

For example, despite still being just 23 years old, and therefore three years away from his expected peak, according to research from The Athletic, the dynamic winger has made 265 appearances for Arsenal, in which he has scored 71 goals and provided 72 assists.

Moreover, despite missing almost four months with a hamstring injury and having to work his way back up to full match fitness, his numbers from last season aren’t too far off Isak’s.

In his 37 appearances for the Gunners, totalling 2619 minutes, the Englishman scored 12 goals and provided 14 assists.

That comes out to a sensational average of a goal involvement every 1.42 games, or every 100.73 minutes.

In contrast, the former Toon star scored 27 goals and provided six assists in 42 appearances, totalling 3324 minutes.

That comes out to a marginally better average of a goal involvement every 1.27 games, or every 100.72 minutes.

Moreover, when you take into account that the Swede was playing down the middle and expected to be his side’s primary goal threat, it’s even more impressive that, in an injury-riddled campaign, the Hale End icon put up comparable numbers.

Ultimately, Isak is an extraordinary player and looks set to make Arsenal’s hunt for a Premier League title far tougher this season.

However, in Saka, they have someone more valuable, and so long as he gets fit and remains so, someone who could be the difference come May.

'My shot changed the momentum' – Sachin Baby takes 'blame' for Kerala's heartbreaking loss

“It was a brain fade moment,” he said as he rued Kerala’s missed chance of winning their maiden Ranji title

Thirty youngsters, part of the state under-14s and under-16s, had been flown into Nagpur by the Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) in anticipation of Sachin Baby’s team creating history by winning their maiden Ranji Trophy title. While they didn’t see their illustrious seniors win Indian domestic cricket’s biggest prize, some of them clicked pictures with the replica of the Ranji Trophy, perhaps dreaming of laying their hands on the main one in the years to come.Several members of the Kerala team, heartbroken and lost for words, recognised the presence of these young kids in the stands, posing for pictures even as Baby momentarily brought some comic relief at the presentation. “You guys have beaten us in all three knockout stages. Next time, guys, we’ll beat you. We’ll give you a tougher time,” Baby told the Vidarbha team in jest.In 2017-18, Kerala were beaten by Vidarbha in the quarter-final. In the following season, Kerala were ousted in the semi-final. In 2024-25, Kerala were vanquished in their maiden final. Baby was part of all the heartbreaks. This one may have been the toughest to take, because Baby was at the front and centre of their march. A lead was in touching distance when Baby let the temptation of a hundred in his 100th first-class game get to him.”Brain fade,” he said at the post-match press conference, of the slog he dragged to Karun Nair at deep midwicket on 98. The occasion couldn’t have been bigger; a century in his 100th first-class game may have well killed the game. But it wasn’t to be; it was as if they’d run out of luck in the quarter-finals and semi-finals, which they scraped through courtesy leads of one and two runs respectively. The Kerala side with the runners-up trophy•KCA

“As the leader, I’ll take the blame,” he said. “My shot changed the momentum of the game. I wanted to be there for the team, and we were six down. I wanted to be there till the end to get the lead. I wanted to have a lead of 100-plus if at all we got a lead. That would have made a difference.”Baby couldn’t quite explain why he played the slog – it was instinct more than a calculated risk, one that he will perhaps replay in his mind over and over again. “I was playing all along the ground till that moment, but then I don’t know what happened and why I played that shot. But that and the dropped catch of Karun [Nair] were important moments of the game.”And then he continued. “If I take credit for the success, I will take the blame for failure, too. Nobody plays a shot to get out. That shot was not on my mind, actually. Maybe, it was a brain fade moment. But on this wicket, you had to play shots. If I had played too defensively, there would have been pressure on the team and myself.”At 36, Baby is the oldest member of this side. He hates the use of the word ‘veteran’ to describe ageing stars. He says he’s never felt fitter – all possible signs of him wanting to continue. But without wanting to make it about him, he continued: “We have to improve still. I was telling the team about how Vidarbha came back from the defeat in last year’s final to win the trophy this year.”

A DESPEDIDA

No Dorgu, new role for Amad: How Amorim can save Man Utd job & keep 3-4-2-1

A familiar sense of Deja vu crept in during the aftermath of Manchester United’s dismal derby defeat. Hadn’t we seen this one before?

Sitting in the Sky Sports studio at the Etihad, greats of United’s past – Roy Keane and Gary Neville – carried out the bi-weekly post-mortem, analysing and debating the future of yet another post-Sir Alex Ferguson manager.

The treble-winning duo had just been forced to witness what has become a trademark display of the last few years for the Red Devils. A performance with moments of encouragement, albeit with glaring problems at both ends of the pitch.

A team that can’t score and simply can’t defend, as their -3 goal difference can attest to, won’t get very far amid what has become an increasingly competitive Premier League.

These are not new issues for the Old Trafford side, although new lows and new depths have been reached in the Ruben Amorim regime. 31 points from 31 top-flight games in charge, with a worse win ratio than any permanent United manager post-World War II.

The Portuguese coach has been steadfast in his unwillingness to alter the much-maligned 3-4-2-1 system, but something simply has to change. How about tweaking the starting lineup, Ruben?

1 GK – Senne Lammens

It would be unfair to shift too much of the blame for Sunday’s defeat onto starting goalkeeper, Altay Bayindir, although the Turkish international hardly inspired much confidence yet again.

Indeed, a heavy touch in the early knockings almost gifted an opening to Erling Haaland inside the area, while the 27-year-old was far too easily beaten by the Norwegian’s dinked effort to make it 2-0.

While Gianluigi Donnarumma grew in the face of Benjamin Sesko bearing down on goal in the first half, Bayindir simply shrunk. Now is the time to give new man Senne Lammens a go instead.

2 RCB – Leny Yoro

The weekend clash may not have been Leny Yoro at his best, having been withdrawn on the hour mark, although the Frenchman has been a real bright spark in 2025, after making his competitive debut for the club in December.

With pace, power and poise, the teenager has all the makings of a world-class centre-back, with reports even suggesting that Amorim views him as the club’s ‘next Rio Ferdinand’ due to his innate composure in the backline.

While his best work did come as a left-sided centre-back last term, it would be wise to continue with the ex-Lille starlet on the opposite flank.

3 CB – Matthijs de Ligt

A starter in every league game so far this season, Matthijs de Ligt has begun to grow into his role as a starting option at United, even if he was hardly error-free up against the relentless Haaland last time out.

Seemingly made for that central role in the back three, the Dutchman has the edge over Harry Maguire right now, with the sight of the Englishman failing to catch Manchester City’s lethal number nine having become far too familiar of late.

Maguire remains a valuable squad member in Amorim’s ranks, although Sunday again outlined his weaknesses. This is De Ligt’s time now.

4 LCB – Ayden Heaven

While Lisandro Martinez may look to slot back in amid his return from injury later this year, the derby defeat showcased yet again the need for increased mobility in the backline.

The diminutive Martinez can’t exactly offer that, although young Ayden Heaven certainly can. At just 18, the ex-Arsenal sensation is not yet the finished product, although as Wayne Rooney stated last season, he looks like he’s “been there for years”.

The speed and strength of Heaven could then see Luke Shaw finally ousted at left centre-back, with the long-serving defender looking worryingly off the pace at the Etihad. Skipped past by Jeremy Doku, and overpowered by Haaland, the 30-year-old has surely outstayed his welcome in Manchester.

5 RWB – Noussair Mazraoui

One potential positive from the weekend defeat was the return of Noussair Mazraoui, with the Moroccan international putting in a typically accomplished performance at right wing-back, prior to his second-half withdrawal.

A player viewed by those at the club as one of their best signings in years, the former Bayern Munich man has the versatility to slot in as a centre-back, although he could make the right flank his own instead.

Elegant in possession and an industrious figure out of it, Mazraoui is the type of player that this team needs – they are a better side with him in it.

6 CM – Bruno Fernandes

The debate surrounding Bruno Fernandes will continue to rage on. Should United have sanctioned his Saudi switch? Does Amorim need to reinstate him in the number ten berth? Can he ever thrive as part of a midfield two?

While the skipper’s inability to track Phil Foden for the game’s opener showcased his shortcomings in that deep-lying berth, the lack of adequate alternatives ensures that this experiment must be continued.

A man who recorded 38 goals and assists last term while largely operating in this role, Fernandes has the quality to make it work. He just needs a suitable partner.

7 CM – Kobbie Mainoo

Pep Guardiola gripped the top of his head in frustration as Kobbie Mainoo breezed his way through the City midfield, a second-half moment that outlined just why Amorim has to find a permanent role for the 20-year-old in his side.

At 33 and into the final year of his contract, Casemiro’s time at Old Trafford is nearly up. As for Manuel Ugarte, the Uruguayan warrior is up for the fight, although lacks the technical prowess to match – notably ranking in just the bottom 17% of European midfielders for progressive passes per 90, as per FBref.

Mainoo isn’t perfect – Amorim has stressed that more than most – although in a side that stinks of chaos, he can be the player to bring that much-needed sense of calm.

8 LWB – Amad

The player to have made the most touches in the penalty area on Sunday? It was not Haaland no, it was Patrick Dorgu with 12.

The young Dane was the major outlet for the visitors, although despite his regular involvement, the 20-year-old’s lack of end quality was stark. As per Sofascore, he lost the ball on 17 occasions and successfully completed just one of his five attempted dribbles.

In truth, the lack of an alternative has ensured the January arrival remains in by default, although Amorim could be bold and unleash Amad in his place. A natural left-footer, the Ivorian has been trialled on the opposite flank, but why not give him a chance on the left instead?

9 RAM – Bryan Mbeumo

Perhaps the only bright spark in the early weeks of the season, and in the derby, Bryan Mbeumo has been a rare astute signing if recent evidence is anything to go by, having netted against both Grimsby and Burnley last month.

Had it not been for the remarkable reach of Donnarumma, that tally would have been bolstered on Sunday, with the Cameroonian also unable to sort his feet out from close range after Amad’s pull back.

A mixture of silk, speed and devastating finishing, the 26-year-old is everything United have been crying out for. Let’s hope he doesn’t get dragged down by Amorim’s sinking ship.

10 LAM – Matheus Cunha

This selection, in the short-term, would be fitness permitting, although if available, new man Matheus Cunha is already a shoo-in for the starting XI, even if goal contributions have been lacking to date.

On another day, the Brazilian could have had a brace away at Fulham, with it hopefully not too long before he is fit and firing again.

That left-sided number ten berth looks to be made for the former Wolves talisman, with Mason Mount’s inability to stay off the treatment table ensuring that, for all Amorim’s praise, the unfortunate Englishman just can’t be relied upon.

Foakes rearguard holds up Essex but Surrey made to follow on

Former Chelmsford academy product makes four-and-a-half hour 92 not out

Surrey 365 (Foakes 92*, Burns 73, Harmer 4-83) and 9 for 0 trail Essex 582 for 6 dec by 208 runsBen Foakes defied his former county for four hours and 41 minutes but could not prevent Essex asking reigning champions Surrey to follow-on in the Rothesay County Championship at Chelmsford. The one-time England wicketkeeper, an Essex academy graduate, stood resolutely while wickets fell all around him to remain not out 92 as Surrey were dismissed for 365 in their first innings, 217 runs in arrears. Second time around Surrey had reduced the requirement to make Essex bat again by nine runs without loss in six overs at the end of day three. It could have been worse for the visitors. They collapsed from their overnight 109 for 1 to 180 for 6, undone by a spell of three wickets in 15 balls amid pre-lunch mayhem in which five wickets fell and the guts were ripped out of the middle-order.Simon Harmer led the way for Essex with 4 for 83 from a marathon 47 overs, 34 of them bowled in the day. It was a welcome return to form for the South African offspinner, who failed to add to his 35 five-fers and ten 10-wicket hauls for the club during an uncharacteristically disappointing 2024 season. At the start of an eventful day under clear, bright skies, Ollie Pope lasted just seven balls before he was beaten all ends up by a delivery from Porter that flicked his off-bail. It ended a 103-run stand with Burns for the second wicket.Jamie Smith made his presence felt with three quick boundaries off Porter, including a straight drive that brooked no argument. However, five balls after cutting Shane Snater’s first ball decisively to the square-leg boundary, Smith essayed a cover-drive, missed and kept walking as his off stump went cartwheeling. That brought in Foakes, but before he could settle Surrey lost their second wicket in two balls. This time Harmer induced an outside edge off Burns’s bat for a caught-behind for 73. And it became three wickets with just eight runs added as Dan Lawrence’s six-ball stay ended when Harmer got one to jump up with the resultant involuntary edge deviating to slip.Ryan Patel looked completely bamboozled by Harmer. He faced 23 deliveries from the offspinner, barely getting near any of them, let alone scoring a run, before nudging one into the wicketkeeper’s gloves. In addition to his wickets, Harmer was parsimonious in terms of conceding runs, so when Foakes pushed him through the covers it was only the second boundary he had conceded in 26 overs. The scoreboard clicked rapidly when the new-ball was taken with 40 runs coming from the first six overs, moving Surrey to their first of two batting points in the process, before Jordan Clark’s freewheeling 45 from 88 balls was ended by Cook.Foakes reached his fifty when he edged his eighth four just wide of slip off Snater. He had put on 55 for the eighth wicket with Matt Fisher before losing his fifth partner, the recruit from Yorkshire being bowled by one from Harmer that kept low.James Taylor joined Foakes in a time-consuming 22-over stand worth 50 runs before Matt Critchley switched ends for one over and removed Taylor with a googly. He then swapped back to his previous end to account for Kemar Roach lbw and end the innings.

Carlo Ancelotti? É assunto da CBF.

Ishan Kishan walks but Ultra Edge shows no edge

The SRH batter felt he had edged a leg glance to the wicket-keeper even though technology did not detect an edge

Aaron and Knight stumped by Kishan’s ‘bizarre’ dismissal

Ishan Kishan was dismissed in curious circumstances during Sunrisers Hyderabad’s (SRH) home game against Mumbai Indians (MI) on Wednesday, even as technology suggested he may not have been out.Kishan tried to glance a length ball from Deepak Chahar that was swinging down the leg side, failed to make proper contact, and then began to walk off even though none of the MI players had appealed for a caught behind after wicketkeeper Ryan Rickelton “caught” the ball.Umpire Vinod Seshan first began to raise his arms sideways to signal a wide, but then dropped one arm and raised the other hesitantly to signal out as he spotted Kishan walking off. MI captain Hardik Pandya ran up to Kishan and patted him on the helmet for his decision to walk without waiting for the umpire’s decision. However, when the Ultra Edge replays were shown on the broadcast a few deliveries later, there was no spike to indicate an edge as the ball passed the bat.It was the second time Kishan had fallen caught by the wicketkeeper down the leg side this season. On this occasion, he was dismissed for 1 off 4 balls, leaving SRH 9 for 2 in 2.1 overs after being asked to bat. They subsequently slipped further to 35 for 5 by the ninth over of the innings before posting 143 for 8, which was far from enough for MI.SRH are currently ninth in the points table in IPL 2025, having won only two of their first eight games, above only Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Their next three fixtures are against Chennai Super Kings (April 25), Gujarat Titans (May 2) and Delhi Capitals (May 5).MI are third with five wins from eight games. They play Lucknow Super Giants next (April 27), followed by Rajasthan Royals (May 1) and Gujarat Titans (May 6).
