Newcastle battling Man Utd and Spurs over goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili

Newcastle United are reportedly battling two Premier League rivals for the signing of a "very interesting" player who has been dubbed a "great" in his position.

Newcastle suffer Nick Pope injury blow

The Magpies look like a team on their last legs at the moment, with so many tired performances on show, especially in Sunday's 4-1 defeat away to Tottenham. Eddie Howe has been dealt some terrible luck in the injury department since August, with so many key players unavailable throughout the campaign, making it hard to rotate and keep everyone fresh across various competitions.

Perhaps the most damaging injury setback of the season to date has been the one suffered by Nick Pope, with a serious shoulder issue expected to keep him out of action for many months. The Englishman has been a huge influence since arriving from Burnley, proving to be such a reliable figure between the sticks, and Martin Dubravka's uninspiring performance against Spurs arguably highlighted the need to bring in a new 'keeper during the January transfer window.

Former Manchester United stopper David De Gea has been linked as a target for Newcastle, with the Spaniard currently a free agent, while Crystal Palace's Sam Johnstone is also considered an option for the Magpies. Now, another name has been thrown into the mix, with an exciting young 'keeper believed to be on Howe's radar ahead of the January transfer window.

Newcastle want Giorgi Mamardashvili

According to a fresh transfer update from Spain, Newcastle are interested in completing the signing of Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili.

The Magpies are not the only Premier League club who are keen on snapping up the 23-year-old, though, with Manchester United and Tottenham also believed to be admirers of his. Mamardashvili could be precisely what Newcastle are looking for to make up for the costly absence of Pope, with the Georgian a highly-rated player with most of his career still ahead of him at 23 years of age.

This season, the Magpies transfer target has started 16 matches in La Liga, winning one Man of the Match award from WhoScored in the process, and he is also a 14-time capped Georgia international, showing that he is an important player at international level, too. Legendary former Spain and Valencia 'keeper Santiago Canizares has heaped praise on him in the past, saying:

"He’s a great goalkeeper, he’s a very high-level player. And then in addition to that he’s very young. Goalkeepers improve year on year, so I couldn’t tell you what level he could reach. If he keeps improving at the current rate, it’s impossible to say how good he could get. He could be a very interesting target for any European club. And then the position that his club are in mean that it’s natural that he’d be on the transfer market."

The lure of the Premier League could be great for Mamardashvili, and Newcastle could appeal the most, considering he would be almost certain to go straight into the side without Pope around, with Dubravka a step down in quality.

Man Utd could land £52m "sensation" as Maguire upgrade this January

Manchester United have conceded 39 goals in all competitions in merely 26 matches this season despite having the most clean sheets in the Premier League in the previous campaign.

The backline has particularly been an area of concern for Erik ten Hag as the Dutch coach has been unable to field his first-choice defenders consistently.

With the January window on the near horizon, and United still leaking goals like a broken faucet, the manager is reportedly keen to bolster his backline.

Manchester United transfer news – Goncalo Inacio

According to recent reports in Portugal, via Sport Witness, Sporting Clube de Portugal central defender Goncalo Inacio is high on Man United’s transfer agenda over the coming weeks in an attempt to shore up the backline midway through the season.

The outlets claim that Sporting CP have academy product Joao Muniz ready to make the step up to the first-team in anticipation of offers from English trio Man United, Liverpool, and Newcastle United.

Ten Hag’s men have been linked with signing the Portugal international in the past and could have secured his services for merely £39m during the summer window by activating his previous release clause. However, Inacio signed a new four-year deal with Sporting as recently as August, with his buyout clause now set at £52m.

Manchester United have a number of players absent at the moment, including former skipper Harry Maguire as well as £57m signing Lisandro Martinez, who has been out since the start of September. Inacio could add much-needed quality at the back for the Reds.

Goncalo Inacio stats at Sporting CP

The most important detail to check is Inacio’s injury record. The last thing Manchester United need right now is another big-money signing coming to Old Trafford and spending months on the injury table.

As per Transfermarkt, Inacio has missed just one game since October 2021 which came in March 2022 when the defender had the flu. In total, Inacio has missed nine matches in his professional career through illness and injury which is quite impressive and shows that he is rarely unavailable.

The most important trait Inacio has that makes him a dime a dozen is his left foot. Ten Hag has admitted in Martinez’s absence that he prefers having left-footed players at left centre-back, hence why Raphael Varane has seen limited game-time in recent months and why Luke Shaw has been shoehorned in at the back.

Being left-footed at left centre-half means that the team building out have a greater chance of bypassing the opposition’s high press as the player can open his body out and progress the ball, rather than being uncomfortable on his weaker foot when doing so. Due to Ten Hag’s preference for left-footers on that side, Inacio fits the bill perfectly.

Secondly, it seems likely that both Varane and Jonny Evans will leave Old Trafford in the near future. Varane has been linked with a move away from Man United this winter, while Evans is 36 in less than three weeks and his contract only runs until the summer.

Meanwhile, Maguire, who was absent from United’s trip to Anfield on Sunday, could even be phased out if Inacio is brought to the club over the coming weeks. In fact, the Portuguese defender has outperformed both Maguire and Evans in several key metrics this term.

These statistics suggest that the Portuguese colossus could provide far more quality in possession in comparison to the two British defenders, with his ability to progress the ball from deep, whilst also excelling as a ball-winner.

Football scout Jacek Kulig has even described the 22-year-old as a “sensation” for his performances with Sporting and this sensation could be on his way to Old Trafford to clean house this winter as an upgrade on Evans and Maguire with his ball-playing exploits.

Man City player ratings vs Tottenham: One hand on the trophy! Erling Haaland and Stefan Ortega break Arsenal hearts as champions find a way to edge towards fourth-successive Premier League title

Pep Guardiola won't have been delighted by aspects of his side's display, but they still came away with an absolutely vital victory

In the end, it was job done, but Manchester City should count themselves lucky that they are entering the final day of the Premier League season with a two-point advantage. Pep Guardiola's side may have secured a 2-0 victory against Tottenham on Tuesday, but this was a decidedly clunky display – which will have made the result even harder to digest for the hundreds of thousands of Arsenal fans tuned in around the world. City's job is now simple: win against West Ham on Sunday and a fourth-straight Premier League title will be theirs.

Perhaps it was the cricket-like atmosphere or maybe Ange Postecoglou's unexpected, striker-less formation, but the visitors looked well off it in the first 45 minutes. Tottenham put them under sustained periods of pressure and even forced Ederson into action once or twice, dispelling any notions that they would roll over to avoid handing Arsenal a boost in the title race.

City did come closest to opening the scoring before the break, though, with Guglielmo Vicario pulling off a superb, reaction save to deny Phil Foden and Radu Dragusin diverting Bernardo Silva's effort away with his head when it appeared certain to fly in.

The tension that had been building in the first half was soon punctured after the restart, though. Kevin De Bruyne was the architect, fizzing a wicked ball across the penalty area where Erling Haaland was lying in wait to tap home.

The goal drastically changed the atmosphere in the stadium, but it wasn't all plain sailing for the reigning champions. With a little over 20 minutes of normal time remaining, Ederson had to be replaced by Stefan Ortega and the German was immediately called into action, just about smothering Dejan Kulusevski's point-blank effort to keep his side's slim advantage intact.

City had an even shakier moment before the full-time whistle mercifully blew too, with Son Heung-min bursting through on goal after Manuel Akanji dithered on the ball. Ortega was equal to the challenge again, though, with his manager collapsing in a heap on the floor as the dust settled.

Spurs were quickly punished for this missed opportunity too, with Pedro Porro fouling Jeremy Doku in the box in the final minute of the 90, and Haaland duly stepped up to seal an ugly, but vital three points.

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Ederson (7/10):

Made a couple of important stops when Spurs were threatening early on. Frustrated to be subbed, but head injuries must be treated with caution.

    Kyle Walker (6/10):

Was afforded plenty of space down the right-hand side, but did not always make the most of it.

    Manuel Akanji (5/10):

Fluffed a clearance to give Kulusevski a sight at goal in the second half and was also at fault for Son's chance.

    Ruben Dias (5/10):

A couple of sloppy moments, including a potentially costly slip in the closing stages.

    Josko Gvardiol (6/10):

Pretty good in both directions. Might have done better with a first-half chance on the volley.

    Midfield

    Rodri (6/10):

Shut down pretty effectively in the first half as Tottenham attempted to flood the midfield. Grew into things.

    Mateo Kovacic (6/10):

Sprayed a couple of really impressive passes, though looked a little lightweight at times.

    Kevin De Bruyne (7/10):

Provided a much-needed moment of inspiration and was subbed off soon after with the final day of the season in mind.

    Attack

    Bernardo Silva (7/10):

Did well to release De Bruyne in the lead-up to the goal. Linked up well with Walker at times.

    Erling Haaland (7/10):

Barely touched it, but of course he scored from a De Bruyne assist. Converted the pressure penalty too.

    Phil Foden (6/10):

Ran down a couple of dead ends. Definitely not his best game of the season, even if he did play a role in both goals.

    Jeremy Doku (7/10):

Drew the foul for the penalty.

    Julian Alvarez (N/A):

On for the final few minutes.

    Pep Guardiola (6/10):

His side seemed to struggle with Spurs' approach in the first half, but they got the job done. His ability to breed a winning mentality is quite incredible.

Southgate has named his provisional England squad for Euro 2024 but has opted to omit Rashford after a tough season for the Manchester United star. Rashford and Jordan Henderson are the two most-high profile absentees from an England squad that includes five uncapped players. Southgate has explained his decision to leave out Rashford, saying "other players have had better seasons" than the 26-year-old.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Rashford has been part of a Manchester United squad that crashed out of the Champions League in the group stages and went on to finish eighth in the Premier League table this season. An FA Cup final awaits on Saturday against Manchester City, but there's no doubt it's been a disappointing campaign for the Red Devils. Rashford has been unable to find his best form on a consistent basis, scoring just seven times in the Premier League, and has now paid the price by being left out of the England squad.

  • WHAT RASHFORD SAID

Rashford has reacted to news of his omission from the squad in a post on social media. He posted an image of the squad list on Instagram with the message: "Wishing Gareth and the boys all the best for the up and coming tournament."

    WHAT NEXT FOR RASHFORD

Rashford will be hoping he can end what's been a difficult season with Manchester United on a high by lifting the FA Cup on Saturday. The forward will then get to enjoy a rare summer off after being left out of the England squad and is also expected to hold talks with Sir Jim Ratcliffe over his future at the club.

Farke could ditch Ayling with Leeds swoop to sign £40k-p/w whiz

Leeds United are reportedly looking to bolster their playing squad when the January transfer window officially opens for business next month.

Leeds transfer news – Bright Osayi-Samuel

According to TEAMtalk, the Whites are one of three English sides in the race to land Fenerbahce defender Bright Osayi-Samuel ahead of the second half of the season.

The report has claimed that Premier League teams Wolverhampton Wanderers and Crystal Palace are also eyeing up a swoop for the Nigeria international.

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke.

It is stated that Palace are currently ahead of Leeds and Wolves in the pursuit of the former QPR star and there is no mention of how much he would cost in January.

Daniel Farke could, though, ditch Luke Ayling by securing a deal to sign Osayi-Samuel ahead of the two top-flight clubs at the turn of the year.

Luke Ayling's season in numbers

The veteran full-back has lost his starting place to 17-year-old Archie Gray, who is a central midfielder by trade, under the German head coach this season.

He has only made eight Championship starts and featured in 14 league matches in total since the club were relegated from the Premier League.

luke-ayling-leeds-united-milan-van-ewijk-transfer-gossip-farke

Ayling has averaged 2.8 tackles and interceptions per game, with a duel success rate of 53%, but has also been dribbled past 1.1 times per match and only been successful with 24% of his attempted dribbles in those 14 outings.

The 32-year-old battler has also contributed with one goal and one assist from right-back, and these statistics have not done enough to convince Farke that he has what it takes to be his first-choice option in that position.

Bringing in a new number two, in Osayi-Samuel, would leave Ayling further down the pecking order and allow the manager to part ways with him in January, or next summer when his contract expires.

The statistics that show why Leeds should sign Osayi-Samuel

The Whites target has been a regular starter for Fenerbahce and caught the eye with his impressive defensive displays for the Turkish giants.

Osayi-Samuel has averaged 3.1 tackles and interceptions combined per match, with a duel success rate of 59%, and has only been dribbled past 0.3 times per clash across 12 Super Lig appearances.

These statistics show that the 25-year-old, who is seven years younger than Ayling, can win possession back more frequently than the current Leeds defender and does not allow opposition players to get the better of him anywhere near as often as the English dud.

The Fenerbahce star, who has improved since his struggles last season, also has experience in English football. During his time with QPR, manager Mark Warburton claimed that he "terrifies defenders" with his sheer pace.

Throughout the 2019/20 and 2020/21 campaigns combined, Osayi-Samuel racked up eight goals, ten assists, and 13 'big chances' created in 54 Championship starts as a winger.

This suggests that the £40k-per-week whiz has the potential to offer quality as an attacking force if Farke can get the best out of him, whilst also being an upgrade on Ayling from a defensive perspective, which is why Leeds could ditch their experienced dud with a swoop for him.

Big Nottingham Forest update on Keylor Navas return with talks now open

Nottingham Forest are thought to be in talks over a sensational move that would see Keylor Navas return to The City Ground, with one reporter sharing a big update.

Nottingham Forest transfer news

The Reds, now under the leadership of Nuno Espirito Santo, have been known to be active when it comes to the transfer market following their return to the Premier League in 2022.

This January window could be no different, with plenty of rumours already circling as to who could make the move to join Nuno’s side. Recent reports have claimed that due to the club losing Serge Aurier, Willy Boly, Ibrahim Sangare, Cheikhou Kouyate, Moussa Niakhate and Ola Aina to the Africa Cup of Nations, Forest are planning for a 'hectic' month in the market.

Two players who have been heavily linked with moves to the club are defender Nino from Fluminense and winger Gelson Martins, although the latter now looks set to join Olympiacos, also owned by Evangelos Marinakis.

Another who could be on the move this month is known to Forest fans already in Navas, and a development has now emerged.

Nottingham Forest open Keylor Navas talks

According to Football Insider reporter Wayne Veysey, Forest have now opened talks with Paris Saint-Germain over a ‘sensational return’ to The City Ground for Navas.

It is believed that Nuno ‘wants a proven goalkeeper who is more adept with the ball at his feet than current number one Matt Turner’. He adds that ‘negotiations are now underway to take Navas back and Forest are hopeful a deal can be agreed with PSG once again’.

Navas starred for the club on loan during the previous campaign under Steve Cooper, helping the club stay in the top flight. The £180,000-a-week goalkeeper was dubbed a “massive” player by Neco Williams following his debut against Leeds United.

“What a debut (for Keylor Navas), massive, massive saves. He kept us in it and we’re thankful for him. What a career he’s had and what a career he’s having. It’s not easy making your Premier League debut against Leeds.”

Cooper was also a fan, saying:

"In the few days that he's been, we've seen a hardworking, humble guy who regardless of what I just said about what he's done in the game, he still would have wanted to do well today and show his worth because that's what a guy of that level does, and he did.

"Brilliant in the first half, game managed equally as good in the second half and in the end, it was individual moments in terms of Keylor's save, Brennan's finish that won us the game."

Forest have currently conceded 35 goals from 20 games in the top flight, more than any side outside of the bottom three, struggling for clean sheets, so bringing Navas back could once again be a shrewd move, and it looks as if it’ll be one to watch this month.

Mario Gotze reveals why he needed Jurgen Klopp instead of Pep Guardiola as ex-Bayern & Dortmund star explains how his career went downhill after scoring World Cup-winning goal

Mario Gotze believes Jurgen Klopp's man-management is superior to Pep Guardiola's, while revealing how he struggled after his 2014 World Cup triumph.

  • Gotze worked with Guardiola and Klopp

  • German struggled after 2014 World Cup win
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

At the age of 22, Gotze scored the winning goal against Argentina in the 2014 World Cup final as the Germans lifted the famous trophy for the fourth time. However, the attacking midfielder has, arguably, not reached those heights again, with the 32-year-old saying it was hard to maintain that level for a long time. He has also contrasted the management styles of his former Borussia Dortmund boss Klopp and ex-Bayern Munich manager Guardiola during his respective stints at the German giants.

    WHAT MARIO GOTZE SAID

He told German publication : "When it comes to managing people, I was used to Jurgen Klopp. Jurgen, then as now, simply has a great feeling for people and their situation. With Pep [Guardiola], it was all about performance."

However, having been rocketed to stardom as a young player, he admits that it was the ex-Liverpool boss he needed more than Guardiola "because with all the expectations that were placed on me, I needed this one more facet in my life situation."

On winning the World Cup at 22, he added: "It was a liberation. Also a satisfaction because I had played so little during the tournament. Joy, of course. And I still remember: the next season started with the DFB-Pokal. You score that goal and three weeks later you're on the pitch against third division team Preussen Munster… The discrepancy was pretty stark. You had to get used to it.

"If I could paint a picture of my career, I would have scored the goal at the age of 35 in my last tournament and then said: 'That's it, I'm quitting'."

Because of this success, Gotze admitted the "bar was very high" from thereon in.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Gotze has still enjoyed a stellar career. He has been capped 66 times by Germany, has won multiple trophies at Dortmund, Bayern, and PSV. However, the Eintracht Frankfurt man has not quite kicked on from that 2014 World Cup win, as many predicted he would.

Player signing for Tottenham now possible after "complete turnaround"

The Lilywhites have moved quickly to seal major signings for Postecoglou this month, in stark contrast to previous years, when they often waited until the January window's end.

Both Timo Werner and Radu Dragusin were officially announced as new Tottenham players last week in a big boost for the Australian, with both men making their debuts in a 2-2 draw away to Man United last Sunday.

This comes after Postecoglou publicly requested that Spurs do their January business early doors, so any potential new signing can bed into the first team nice and quickly.

"If you can bring them in early, even if they don't play you can bed them into training and our style of football because it's not like we're going to sign somebody and they'll hit the ground running. Maybe they could," said Postecoglou on January signings last month.

Signs Levy will make imminent Tottenham bid to sign "gem" new target

He’s been revered for his tenacity.

"Whereas if you leave it towards the end of January, it's potentially not until mid to end of February when they get up to speed, depending where they're coming from, the league they're coming from. So there's a whole lot of moving parts. So yes, I'd love to do something early in the window but even me saying that puts a challenge on us – because other clubs know we want to do something early.

"You've got to play the game, we'll see what happens but I'm hopeful it will be much earlier than the end of the window before we bring someone in."

In more good news for Tottenham supporters and the club's manager, Werner and Dragusin may not be the only signings coming through the door before January 31, as reports claim Spurs are pressing ahead with plans to bring in a new number eight.

Conor Gallagher for Chelsea

Chelsea star Conor Gallagher is believed to be of serious interest to Spurs, though much will depend on whether the Blues are willing to sell and if chairman Daniel Levy is able to offload Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

Nevertheless, the fact Tottenham granted Postecoglou's wish for early incomings just shows how much the manager is respected behind the scenes.

Mystery player could join Tottenham after "complete turnaround"

This is further highlighted by Mokbel and an interesting claim. Indeed, according to the journalist, a mystery player would seriously consider joining Tottenham after a "complete turnaround" – which is largely down to Postecoglou.

"That’s the power of Ange Postecoglou," said Mokbel to The Last Word on Spurs podcast (as transcribed by TBR).

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou.

"I was speaking to some representatives of players Tottenham have had an interest in and the feedback I was getting last summer was ‘we’re not sure, Tottenham are in a period of flux, we don’t know what Ange Postecoglou is going to be like, we’re not interested in Tottenham this summer.’ I made the same call last week and said what’s going on with X player, it’s a complete turnaround ‘Oh, yeah I think it has legs in the summer, that deal could happen, they’re definitely interested and we’d definitely consider it.’

"The tables have completely turned. In seven months Ange Postecoglou has built this reputation of a team who are going places and a team that plays attacking football."
