Liverpool readying late bid to sign their next Szoboszlai

Last summer, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp made sweeping changes to his side's midfield after a dismal year bore no success, and while the defensive ranks will receive priority this year, the German could yet bolster his engine room with another addition.

The narrative of the January transfer window at Anfield would suggest that there the Liverpool transfer board are contented and composed at the 2023/24 campaign's midpoint, first-placed in the Premier League and firing on all cylinders.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

And having slalomed past multiple obstacles over the past several months, namely injuries to numerous key players, Klopp appears convinced of his squad's calibre, capable of bringing silverware back to Merseyside over the coming months.

However, the lack of formal action in the market this month does not mean that no deal will be pursued, with recent reports suggesting that Liverpool could make a move to complete last year's midfield repairs ahead of the business end of the term.

Liverpool transfer targets – January

Italian publication La Gazzetta dello Sport – via FourFourTwo – have recently revealed that Liverpool are targeting Atalanta midfielder Teun Koopmeiners and are ready to bid a sum of £40m to secure his services.

The Netherlands international was reportedly on Klopp's radar during the summer but other options were chosen, though the resurfacing of rumours suggests that Liverpool are still convinced of his qualities.

Netherlands midfielder Teun Koopmeiners

While Newcastle United are also interested, Atalanta would prefer to sell Koopmeiners to a foreign club than a Serie A rival and the Reds will be confident that they can convince him to move to Merseyside.

How Teun Koopmeiners compares to Szoboszlai

Koopmeiners has amassed 104 appearances for Atalanta – posting 21 goals and 12 assists – since signing from Dutch Eredivisie team AZ Alkmaar for around €12m (£10m) in 2021.

The 25-year-old is creative and dynamic but offers a roundedness to his craft that would make him a fantastic addition to an ambitious Premier League side such as Liverpool, hailed as the “orchestrator” for his side by talent scout Jacek Kulig, which essentially means a technically proficient player with a range of passing and intelligence in possession to influence play and dictate the flow.

This season, across 26 displays, the ace has scored seven goals and supplied four assists for his Italian outfit, averaging 2.3 key passes, 1.3 tackles and 5.2 ball recoveries per game in Serie A, as per Sofascore.

Moreover, as per FBref, the 6 foot 1 talent ranks among the top 6% of positional peers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals scored, the top 3% for assists and the top 8% for progressive carries per 90, highlighting his creative flair and willingness to drive forward and make things happen for his side.

Given that Dominik Szoboszlai is considered one of Koopmeiner's most comparable Premier League players, via FBref's 'similar players' model, it's clear that Klopp has identified a player of a particular profile to fit his system and is now eager to add another layer by completing a move for the Atalanta man.

Szoboszlai joined the Anfield side in July after his £60m release clause with RB Leipzig was met, and while he has mellowed somewhat after a lightning start to life in the Premier League, the Hungarian has been one of the most impressive and enterprising midfielders around this term.

Described as a "generational talent" by journalist Marcel Moeller, the 23-year-old has started 19 matches in the English top-flight this season, clinching two goals and assists apiece, completing 88% of his passes and averaging 1.8 key passes, 1.4 tackles and 6.4 ball recoveries each outing.

Capable of hitting a football with sheer, brutish force, like the clap of thunder, Szoboszlai has been immense this season and embodies the finest attributes of a quintessential 'Klopp' creative midfielder, and Koopmeiners would only find success by taking the leap and joining the Anfield project.

Of course, it has to be said that there is something of an overload of midfielders in Liverpool's mix at present, but rotation has worked very well indeed as the Reds chase down silver-laden success across all four fronts – top of the Premier League, on the cusp of advancing to the Carabao Cup final and having advanced in both the FA Cup and the Europa League.

His versatility is an asset; he has an innate understanding of how to thrive across multiple midfield roles, deftly tweaking his skills to align with the responsibilities of sitting deep, or impacting proceedings from an attacking standpoint, or providing a balance of sorts in a box-to-box deployment.

Given that Koopmeiners has the talents needed to slot right into Klopp's system (and if Mac Allister is kept in a deeper-lying midfield role going forward) then it is understandable that such a player be welcomed to complete the pack, having also been described as a "machine" by one scout.

There is the matter of Thiago Alcantara's contract expiring at the end of the season, and while the distinguished Spanish star hasn't played once this season due to injury, replacing him with a skilful star is something Klopp is clearly considering.

Liverpool have demonstrated prudence in January transfer windows over recent seasons, signing Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo across the past two years to replace Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino respectively, both moves made six months before the esteemed stars actually took their leave.

Right now, Klopp will feel that he has enough firepower to ensure that his glittering Liverpool trophy cabinet is augmented by summer, and while setbacks to important players have been weathered throughout the first half of the season, Koopmeiners might just be the perfect option to complete the engine room.

Spurs eyeing up "Rolls-Royce" defender who’s like William Saliba

For most Premier League clubs this winter, the transfer market has been rather quiet, teams seemingly lacking the financial means to launch bids for key players or biding their time for a late flurry at the end of the month.

This is not relevant in Tottenham Hotspur's case, with Ange Postecoglou presenting chairman Daniel Levy with a three-position shopping list before January and having already tied up deals for defender Radu Dragusin and versatile forward Timo Werner.

While chatter remains about the club's need for a centre-midfielder, rumours persist that Postecoglou is in for another defender, with Spurs still in contact with a recent top target.

Spurs in for another defender

When Tottenham signed Dragusin from Genoa for around £27m, it looked like Postecoglou's backline was restored, with Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero both returning from injuries too.

But Eric Dier's sale to Bayern Munich, while necessary given his incongruity in the system, does open the door for another centre-half to complete the restructure, with Jean-Clair Todibo still on Tottenham's radar.

According to Téléfoot, the OGC Nice star's entourage have held discussions with Tottenham – alongside Chelsea and Napoli – but a deal is unlikely until the summer, with his club set to demand a record fee for his departure.

This suits Postecoglou's side who are unable to afford such a pricey outlay after this month's expenditure, with a shrewd move for a midfielder still being considered.

How Jean-Clair Todibo would fit in at Spurs

Chelsea might boast some of the most expensive transfer kit around but Tottenham are conducting their business diligently and will be convinced that Todibo could be presented with Champions League football down at N17 next term.

Spurs are fifth in the Premier League at present but have combatted the lack of depth that derailed a fast start this month and will sign again if an opportunity arises.

Finishing eighth in a disappointing 2022/23 campaign, Tottenham are stuck on home shores this season and returning to continental competition is paramount, though clinching Champions League qualification is the surefire way to propel the club back to the forefront.

andreas-christensen-jean-clair-todibo-tottenham-opinion

Increased match action comes tethered to such success and there is little question about the need for more than just Van de Ven and Romero to protect Guglielmo Vicario's goal, and Todibo would be crucial in preserving and improving the squad's fluidity.

Standing at 6 foot 3 and described as a "Rolls-Royce" of a defender by scout Antonio Mango, Todibo returned to his homeland in January 2021 after a disappointing spell with Barcelona, signing for Les Aiglons on loan with a now-activated option to buy.

Piecemeal development was accelerated this season and Todibo has been like an iron pillar in the backline, helping his second-placed side boast the best defensive record in the division, with 11 goals shipped from 18 matches.

That said, the £20k-per-week ace is also one of Europe's most progressive and pass-effective defenders around, ranking among the top 13% of positional peers over the past year for tackles and interceptions but also among the top 5% for passes attempted, the top 7% for successful take-ons and the top 13% for progressive passes per 90, as per FBref.

In Ligue 1, he has completed 91% of his passes across 14 outings – as per Sofascore – and has averaged a whopping 7.1 ball recoveries per outing, effectively solidifying him as one of the most mobile centre-halfs in the business.

Declared to be "solid as a rock" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, Todibo does look like he offers the tools to sculpt a considerable career in the Premier League, and given that he plays like former teammate William Saliba, this argument is only strengthened.

How Jean-Clair Todibo compares to William Saliba

Saliba and Todibo once formed an exciting partnership at Nice and Kulig heralded the "diamonds" for their collective efforts, and while the former is now plying his trade in Arsenal's first-team, considered one of the best centre-backs in the world, it wouldn't be a poor decision for Tottenham to emulate their city rivals by signing their own version.

Signing for Arsenal from Saint Etienne in 2019 for £27m (as an 18-year-old), Saliba spent several years out on loan, which included a term with Nice, before finally cementing a spot in the Emirates Stadium rearguard, integral in Mikel Arteta's title-chasing ambitions over the past few years.

Placed alongside Manchester City titan Ruben Dias in the 2022/23 Premier League Team of the Season, the Frenchman was integral in Arsenal's efforts, playing 27 times before sustaining an injury during the late phase when the Gunners' grip on pole position slipped and allowed City to storm in front.

Ranking among the top 6% of centre-backs across Europe's top five leagues for pass completion and the top 7% for passes attempted per 90, the £190k-per-week star is clearly one of the most technically proficient defenders in the business.

Moreover, he averages six ball recoveries per game in the Premier League this term, which highlights the athleticism that allows him to be so crisp and composed in his defensive duties.

Of course, Todibo mirrors such statistics and if he can find the balance between solidity and spark that has served him so well in France over the past few years, then Tottenham could land an exciting new phenom to propel Postecoglou's project to new heights.

Their tenancy agreement is said to have expired, with Bunney planning to ask them to leave, in order to move his grandfather in.

  • WHAT BUNNEY SAID

Bunney wrote on Instagram: "So I didn't want to have to do this as a landlord and it's so not me but it's embarrassing. I'm on holiday to find Coronation Street star Ryan Prescott (I can't tag him because he blocked me for whatever reason) and @amylythgoe have decided to squat in my house when their tenancy agreement has finished and refuse to leave.

"Let me give you some context, I have my 78 year old grandad who is ready to move into the property from today, which has took (sic) some convincing after recently losing his wife. We wanted him to be closer to our family so he wasn't alone and he's finally agreed and moving out of the pub he has owned for 40+ years. This is great news for us as a family.

"Only to find out that these two haven't even looked to pack up and leave and are planning on staying beyond their tenancy which isn't the agreement, and they have had plenty of notice. Leaving us now with nowhere else to move grandad as was set on this move!! Disgusting."

Man Utd star with 100% pass success v Wolves was the real hero over Mainoo

It was deadline day for the January transfer window on Thursday night but Manchester United stuck to finishing their business on the pitch at the Molineux.

Erik ten Hag's side had to show character to bounce back from multiple setbacks in a thrilling 4-3 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League.

They established a 3-1 lead against the hosts, which was 2-1 after a contentious penalty was given for minimal contact on Pedro Neto from Casemiro, and Wolves battled back to make it 3-3 by the 95th minute.

Up stepped Kobbie Mainoo, though, to secure all three points for United with a stunning winner in the 97th minute to break the hearts of the home faithful.

Whilst the 18-year-old wonderkid was the headliner with his late goal, the real hero on the night was impressive centre-forward Rasmus Hojlund.

Kobbie Mainoo's coming of age against Wolves

The English youngster scored his first Premier League goal in style with a terrific surge into the box that ended with a phenomenal curled finish into the far bottom corner of Jose Sa's net.

Mainoo also battled hard in the middle of the pitch to win possession back for his side on a number of occasions, with three tackles and two interceptions.

However, the teenage whiz did lose seven of his 13 duels and may feel that he could have been more dominant in physical battles against the Wolves players.

He also failed to create a single chance for his teammates out of his 27 completed passes (84% success rate) throughout the 90+ minutes on the pitch.

Meanwhile, Hojlund produced a fantastic all-round centre-forward display that established United's early dominance in the match in the Midlands.

Hojlund's heroic performance against Wolves

The Denmark international had a rough start to life at Old Trafford with zero goals in his first 14 Premier League appearances for the club after his move from Atalanta.

He has now found the back of the net three times in three league matches with a goal against Wolves last night, bundling the ball past Sa from Luke Shaw's cross.

The 20-year-old sensation showed terrific determination and athleticism to get across the defender to ensure that he got the final, and telling, touch on the ball into the six-yard box.

That was not his only contribution to the match, though, as the striker also expertly held the ball up to tee Marcus Rashford up on the edge of the box to make it 1-0 after just five minutes.

As you can see from the table above, Hojlund was flawless with the ball at his feet for the Red Devils. He completed all of his 15 attempted passes and produced two key passes, one assist, and one goal – from two shots on target – in his 25 touches of the ball.

There were also a number of occasions where the United striker made a terrific run off the back of a defender to get in behind but was inexplicably ignored, or not seen, by his teammates, which could have led to further goal involvements from him.

Overall, it was a terrific performance from Hojlund and one that should be thoroughly praised by supporters as he was the real hero for ten Hag with his almost perfect centre-forward display, which was unfortunately overshadowed by a moment of brilliance from Mainoo.

One-season wonder! Joselu set to leave Real Madrid after incredible campaign ahead of Kylian Mbappe & Endrick arrivals

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Once of the club's youth ranks, Joselu returned to Real Madrid last summer on loan after impressing in La Liga with Alaves and Espanyol. He was effectively the sole replacement for Karim Benzema, with the club possessing no other recognised central striker despite then going on to win a rare La Liga and Champions League double. Joselu himself was crucial to the latter success, scoring two late goals in the semi-final against Bayern Munich when it was the Germans who were heading through. Overall, he scored 18 goals in 49 appearances across all competitions. But with Mbappe and Endrick swelling the attacking ranks, Joselu's race back at the Bernabeu has effectively been run and his game time, if he stayed, would likely be massively reduced.

Latest Wolves transfer news: £60m Neto claim, exciting replacement eyed

Football FanCast brings you the latest Wolverhampton Wanderers transfer round-up.

In typical Wolves fashion, the club left any transfer dealings until the last minute in the January transfer window, which meant they failed on their main aim to get a striker in before the deadline. However, things weren't made easy though, as FFP concerns heavily weighed on the shoulder of Gary O'Neil with Premier League giving Nottingham Forest and Everton a slap on the wrist.

Despite the lack of signings, Wolves have been in superb form under O'Neil of late, and even stand a chance of pushing for an unlikely European place from here on in.

Latest Wolves transfer rumours

According to former Wolves correspondent Tim Spiers, the Midlands club could look to sell Pedro Neto in the summer transfer window for around £60 million.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Wolves are showing an interest in signing Arsenal youngster Amario Cozier-Duberry.

Also, Fotbol Direkt claim that Wolves were ready to launch a late bid for Lucas Bergvall in the winter transfer window, but he had already given his word to Spurs so joined them.

    WHAT NEXT FOR ENGLAND?

Southgate's men will aim to make it two finals in a row in the European Championship as they now face Netherlands in the semi-final at Signal Iduna Park in Dortmund on Wednesday.

Leeds could have a youngster with a higher ceiling than Joseph

Mateo Joseph would have been able to exit Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night with smile still on his face despite the disappointing final outcome for Leeds United, the 20-year-old hotshot firing in two goals against Chelsea in the 3-2 loss.

The exciting Whites number 49 would only need three shots on Robert Sanchez's goal in order to bag a brace, seizing a rare first-team opportunity handed to him by Daniel Farke with some vigour in west London.

Those two strikes could see Joseph get more minutes in the Championship between now and the end of the hectic 46-game campaign, but there's a youngster with an even higher ceiling than the goalscoring hero currently out on loan away from Elland Road.

Cody Drameh's statistics at youth level

Cody Drameh does have the additional experience of being two years older than Joseph is on his side, the current Birmingham City loanee flourishing at youth level for Leeds before cutting his teeth with many different loan moves away.

Amassing 43 appearances in the Leeds U21 set-up, Drameh notched up an impressive eight assists and two goals next to his name as an expansive and full-throttle right-back.

These standout displays at youth level would result in the 22-year-old being given chances here and there to shine in the senior Leeds fold, bravely handed three Premier League opportunities during the 2021/22 season.

Since then, Drameh has been loaned out a number of times in a bid to give the attacking full-back time to shine away from West Yorkshire before returning better off to try and stake a claim for a permanent first-team spot.

The 5 foot 9 defender has succeeded with flying colours playing for other second-tier sides, especially with an eventually promoted Luton Town, to the point where it wouldn't be a surprise to see Farke implement Drameh into his first-team plans very soon.

Drameh's record out on loan

Although Joseph did explode into life against Chelsea, the 20-year-old striker is yet to spread his wings away from the comforts of Leeds and grow further in new surroundings out on loan.

Drameh has accumulated nine assists away from Leeds in short-term stints with Birmingham, Cardiff and Luton with the last of those spells culminating in the 22-year-old adding a promotion to the Premier League on his CV.

Drameh's brief time with the Bluebirds even saw him win a Player of the Season accolade for the Welsh side, with the full-back desperate for more Leeds first-team chances soon.

Cardiff manager Steve Morison would sing the praises of Drameh during his stand-out 2021/22 campaign, describing the 22-year-old as "excellent" and possessing the energy of a "Duracell bunny" for the Welsh outfit.

Joseph needs more minutes under his belt to fully come into his own over just starring in a one-off against Mauricio Pochettino's Blues, the 20-year-old did bag his first ever senior goal at Stamford Bridge after all.

Leeds forward Mateo Joseph.

Whereas, with the experience Drameh has managed to gain out on loan and the quality he's shown wherever he's ended up, it wouldn't be a shock to see him be a starting right-back for Leeds for many years to come on his return.

What next for Kepa Arrizabalaga? Chelsea reject Saudi offer for forgotten man after failed Real Madrid loan

Chelsea have reportedly rejected a Saudi Arabian offer for Kepa Arrizabalaga following the goalkeeper's failed loan stint with Real Madrid.

  • Kepa was sent out on loan to Madrid
  • Gradually lost his place to Andriy Lunin
  • Chelsea have turned down Al-Ittihad's offer
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Arrizabalaga, aged 29, remains under contract with Chelsea until 2025. Last season, he was loaned to Real Madrid following a significant injury to their first-choice goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois. The Belgian, who suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during pre-season training, left a gap that Madrid hoped Arrizabalaga could fill effectively.

Initially, Kepa started as Madrid’s primary goalkeeper. However, midway through the 2023-24 season, head coach Carlo Ancelotti started favouring Andriy Lunin, limiting Kepa's appearances. This decision saw Arrizabalaga make only one start after January, significantly diminishing his impact at the club.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

According to Al Ittihad have expressed interest in acquiring Arrizabalaga. Chelsea, however, declined their initial offer. Nonetheless, negotiations with the Saudi club are ongoing, and other potential suitors are also showing interest as Chelsea looks to facilitate a permanent move for the Spanish goalkeeper this summer.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Interestingly, Kepa’s former Chelsea teammate, N’Golo Kante, made a move to Al Ittihad last summer. The Saudi club's roster also includes high-profile players like former Liverpool midfielder Fabinho and ex-Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema. These transfers were part of the broader strategy following the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund (PIF) takeover of four clubs, including Al Ittihad, last year.
