Liverpool wonderkid Giovanni Leoni sent out a positive message after undergoing Anterior Cruciate Ligament surgery. Leoni suffered knee ligament damage when making his competitive debut for the club in a Carabao Cup clash with Southampton last week and will not remain out of action for almost a year. The teenage defender only moved to Anfield over the summer from Parma.
Leoni's nightmare debut for Liverpool
Following his transfer from Parma to Liverpool, 18-year-old Leoni finally got to make his competitive debut for the Reds last week as Arne Slot put him in the starting lineup against Southampton in a Carabao Cup clash. The defender, however, suffered an injury with nine minutes left on the clock and had to be stretchered off the pitch. The Italian underwent scans on his knee before finding out that he has ruptured his ACL and will remain sidelined for a long period.

Huge blow for Leoni and Liverpool
Leoni would have hoped to make a mark in his debut season at Anfield and break into the Italy senior national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup, however, considering ACL injuries can take up to nine months to recover from, he won't be back on the pitch at least until pre-season ahead of the 2026-27 campaign. The Reds too, are dealt a major blow as they now have only Joe Gomez and Rhys Williams as cover for the first-choice centre-back pair of Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate.
Leoni sends out positive message
Following surgery on his knee, Leoni shared an image of himself on the hospital bed and wrote: "Surgery done. Thanks everyone for the messages. I'll be back soon."

Liverpool aim to bounce after back-to-back defeats
After making a perfect start to the 2025-26 campaign, Arne Slot's Reds suffered their maiden defeat against Crystal Palace last week, followed by a 1-0 loss at Galatasaray in the Champions League on Wednesday. They will now aim to bounce back with a win against Chelsea this Saturday in the Premier League.
Nottingham Forest are keen to strengthen the ranks before the window shuts and have now opened talks with an experienced international over a move to the City Ground, according to a report.
Nottingham Forest draw at Selhurst Park amid managerial uncertainty
Creating a backdrop of intrigue, the furore over Crystal Palace’s expulsion from the Europa League that led to Nottingham Forest taking their place fanned the flames of an entertaining 1-1 draw between both sides at Selhurst Park last weekend.
Furthermore, Nuno Espirito Santo’s uncertain future and links with Ange Postecoglou replacing him at the City Ground haven’t quietened things down, albeit the Portuguese boss appeared to cool talk that he is set for an imminent exit.
Nottingham Forest managerNunoEspirito Santo is seen before the match
He told Match of the Day: “I am a person that thinks a lot before saying anything. I say because I believe that things can improve but now is a moment to ignore the noise and focus on what I have to do. My job is clear.
“Of course, there will be resolution. Everything is going to be OK, for sure. It is the moment to sit down and talk. More important is how we play football and I think we are improving, trying to adjust some things and that is where my focus is.”
Speculation is rife over potential additions and AS Monaco midfielder Soungoutou Magassa is on Nottingham Forest’s radar to strengthen their midfield amid competition from West Ham United for his signature.
Matty Cash could also pitch up at the City Ground to provide competition for Ola Aina at full-back, and many suspect there will be more signings to come as Espirito Santo looks to build a squad capable of challenging for continental qualification once again.
Nottingham Forest open talks to sign Dominik Livakovic
According to The Guardian, Nottingham Forest have opened talks to sign Fenerbahce goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic and he is open to a Premier League move before the window draws to a close.
The Croatia international, who has been capped 66 times by his country, is wanted to provide competition for Matz Sels between the sticks and his current employers would be willing to let him leave Istanbul should the correct fee be put on the table.

Praised by Luka Modric for his role in Croatia’s penalty shoot-out victory over Japan at the 2022 World Cup, the 30-year-old kept nine clean sheets in 32 appearances last season, maintaining a save percentage of 66.2%.
Ante Budimir also lauded Livakovic’s “absolutely unbeliavable” contribution on that famous night in Qatar, though he has now fell out of favour under Jose Mourinho and could be set for an exciting new challenge.
Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have made their interest known over the last few years. However, Livakovic would provide genuine competition for Sels and Angus Gunn as the Tricky Trees juggle domestic and European endeavours.
Wolverhampton Wanderers are now looking to sign an attacker who has scored 51 Premier League goals, in an out-of-window free transfer.
Wolves eyeing new addition after slow start
Vitor Pereira oversaw quite the turnaround at Molineux last season, leading his once relegation-threatened side to comfortable safety, but it would be fair to say the manager has made a disappointing start to the new campaign.
Indeed, Wolves are the only Premier League side yet to pick up a single point, most recently suffering a 3-2 home defeat at the hands of Everton, which is arguably their most disappointing result up to this point.
The only respite for the Old Gold came in the EFL Cup, with Jorgen Strand Larsen bagging a brace to help them progress past West Ham United, and there has since been encouraging news about the striker’s future, with it being revealed talks have been opened over a new deal.
However, the Norwegian may need some support in attack if the Wanderers are going to avoid relegation this season, and they have now joined the race for a new attacker.
That is according to a report from Spain, which states Wolves are now looking to sign Dele Alli, who is available on a free transfer after recently being released by Serie A side Como.
The Old Gold could sign Alli in an out-of-window move, given that he is out of contract, and it appears as though they want to get a deal done soon, with the report stating they are looking to strengthen their midfield at this ‘critical point in the season’.
However, Pereira’s side are not the only English club to have expressed an interest, with it being revealed that Ipswich Town are also in the race for his signature.
Signing Alli would be gamble for Wolves
It would not be a huge risk to sign the 29-year-old, given that Wolves would not be required to pay a transfer fee, but it would still have to be considered a gamble, considering the attacking midfielder has struggled ever since leaving Tottenham Hotspur.
During his time in north London, the former Spurs man established himself as a Premier League star, bagging 51 goals and 35 assists in 194 top-flight appearances, but he has since found it difficult to hit those heights.

In his most recent stint in the Premier League, the ex-Everton man was unable to make an impact at Goodison Park, failing to provide a goal or an assist in 13 outings for the Toffees.
As such, it would perhaps be best to avoid a move for Alli, unless he is willing to join on a pay-as-you-play deal.
Jose Mourinho has piled the pressure on Roberto Martinez as the Benfica boss insisted that Portugal must aim to win the World Cup next year. The Selecao boast one of the best squads in Europe with players like Vitinha, Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva in midfield and an attack spearheaded by Cristiano Ronaldo. Portugal are also fresh from winning the Nations League this year.

Mourinho demands World Cup Trophy from Martinez
Legendary manager Mourinho, who returned to his homeland after two decades and took charge of Benfica as head coach, wants Martinez to deliver the World Cup next year in North America. Speaking on the sidelines of the Portugal Football Globes, Mourinho said: "Looking at what is now most obvious, which is the composition of the National team, we are talking about players who play for the biggest Portuguese clubs and also in the best European leagues. The prestige is extremely high and accumulates. We can always talk about the pioneers, the first players and coaches to emerge, but so many years have passed that now it's a matter of accumulating talent. The FPF is creating all the conditions so that Portugal can have the conditions we have today. In a World Cup year, to say that we don't have the ambition to be world champions is almost heresy."

Ronaldo aims to win World Cup 2026
Portugal icon Ronaldo is showing no signs of slowing down despite being at the tailend of his career at the age of 40. The Al-Nassr star has started the new season on a relentless note in Saudi Arabia and he looks determined to give his best at what will be his last World Cup appearance in North America next year.

Mourinho wanted Portugal job
After returning to Benfica this summer, Mourinho had admitted that he always had plans to return to his homeland, but wanted to manage the Portugal national team. Speaking to , the 62-year-old had said: "I’m honest, I always thought I would be back to Portugal. But I always thought I would come back to the national team. I knew that the national team would come sooner or later. It has come before, I didn’t, I couldn’t accept. I was thinking one day it will happen. I think it is a natural consequence of my career. [But] it happened to be Benfica. A giant club."

Portugal aim to maintain 100 per cent record in qualifiers
Portugal kicked off their World Cup qualifying campaign in September with back-to-back wins over Hungary and Armenia. In October, they are scheduled to face Ireland and Hungary on October 11 and 14 respectively, in home fixtures and Martinez's side will aim to maintain their perfect record.
Elyaz Zidane, son of French football icon Zinedine Zidane, is emerging as one of the brightest revelations of the U-20 World Cup in Chile. Playing at the heart of France’s defence, the 19-year-old has logged the most minutes in Bernard Diomede’s side, displaying composure and maturity that go beyond his age and the immense weight of his surname.
From early struggles to becoming a pillar for France U-20
It hasn’t been an easy tournament for Zidane. The Marseille-born defender had a shaky start, conceding a penalty in France’s opening match against Japan. But instead of benching him, coach Diomede stood by his young centre-back, keeping him in the starting XI. That faith paid off as Zidane grew in confidence, becoming one of France’s most reliable players in defence as the team reached the semi-finals.
Zidane started all of France's games at the competition as his commanding presence, aerial dominance, and intelligent positioning have made him a crucial piece of France’s back line.

Diomede defends Zidane as he urges for patience
France U-20 coach Diomede has been vocal about both the promise and the pressure surrounding Zidane Jr., urging patience while acknowledging the expectations that come with his surname. In an interview with , Diomede spoke with both empathy and belief in his young defender’s future.
"As a left-footer, I know how to recognise the quality of a left-footer, and Elyaz has this technical finesse as well as his height . We just have to leave him alone. We've been working for three years to free him up. It's difficult being Zidane's son. We expect a lot from him, certainly too much. We mustn't forget that he's a player from 2005. I'm happy because he's starting to express himself within the team, even if it's very difficult for him. He has the qualities to reach the highest level, he just has to play," said Diomede.
Zidane finding footing at Betis
While Zidane is thriving on the international stage, his club career remains a work in progress. Since joining Real Betis' reserve team from Real Madrid’s youth system in January 2024, the 19-year-old has been part of a development project rather than a first-team player. This season, he’s logged only 180 minutes in Spain’s lower divisions, starting twice, against Teruel and Atletico Madrid B. Zidane possesses the physical and technical tools that modern centre-backs need, what he needs to focus on is continuity, something that his U-20 performances might finally earn him when he returns to Spain.

Zidane proves his resilience in U-20 World Cup
France’s heartbreaking semi-final exit to Morocco was decided by penalties after a tense 1-1 draw. However, this only added to Zidane’s growing experience as he was composed under pressure, leading a defence reduced to 10 men and organising set pieces with remarkable calm for his age. With Diomede’s mentorship and the maturity he’s shown at the U-20 World Cup, Zidane seems poised to take his next step in establishing himself as a key defensive talent.
Tennis star Taylor Fritz has now revealed he is a “massive fan” of a Manchester United and Premier League legend.
Fritz gearing up for the Laver Cup
The eighth edition of the Laver Cup is set to get underway at San Francisco’s Chase Center this Friday, with Team Europe looking to retain their title, after defeating Team World in a thrilling encounter on home soil in Berlin last year.
Team Europe seemingly have a good chance of getting a sixth Laver Cup victory on the board, given that ATP World No.1 Carlos Alcaraz will be heading out to the USA, alongside Alexander Zverev, Holger Rune, Casper Ruud, Jakub Mensik and Flavio Cobolli.
However, it must be noted that Team World also have a strong line-up, which features Reilly Opelka, Joao Fonseca, Alex Michelsen, Francisco Cerundolo, Alex de Minaur and Fritz.
With a current ATP ranking of No.4, the American is undoubtedly the stand-out player for Team World, and he heads into the competition off the back of a relatively strong showing in the most recent singles Grand Slam, reaching the quarter-finals of the US Open.
The 27-year-old is yet to win a Grand Slam, coming closest in the 2024 edition of the US Open, when he was defeated by Jannik Sinner in straight sets in the final.
Not only is the 2024 US Open finalist one of the best tennis players in the world, but he is also a big football fan, and he has previously named Manchester United and Premier League legend Cristiano Ronaldo as one of his inspirations.

Fritz right to take inspiration from Ronaldo
As pointed out by the tennis star, Ronaldo has faced accusations of arrogance throughout his career, but his mentality has led to great success, winning five Ballon d’Ors, three Premier League titles and five Champions Leagues.
The 40-year-old is also way out in front as the top goalscorer in Champions League history, scoring almost double the amount of Raul, who is fifth on the all-time list.

The Portuguese forward is showing no signs of slowing down, scoring 95 goals in 109 games for Al-Nassr, and Fritz will be well-positioned to lead Team World to Laver Cup glory if he is able to replicate Ronaldo’s mentality.
Former Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Marco Verratti believes that Kylian Mbappe's departure to Real Madrid did not play a role in Les Parisiens' historic 2024-25 campaign, which ended with Champions League glory. The Italian midfielder defended the 26-year-old Frenchman's accomplishments in Paris and reflected on the team's failure to win the European crown with Lionel Messi and Neymar.
PSG project flourishes post Mbappe
PSG have become a seriously solid side in the past 12 months. After it seemed like they were finding it difficult to cope with life after Mbappe's departure to Real Madrid, Luis Enrique and his players turned things around splendidly in the second half of the 2024-25 season. Not only did they complete the domestic treble of Ligue 1, Coupe de France and Trophee des Champions, but also finally ended their quest for a maiden Champions League title. They achieved the feat in spectacular fashion, handing Inter a 5-0 drubbing in the final of Europe's premier club competition. The collective success enjoyed by PSG translated to individual success for Ousmane Dembele, who lifted the 2025 Ballon d'Or after scoring 33 goals in 49 games across all competitions.
The PSG project of the present is a far cry from PSG's tendency to assemble a squad filled with superstars. In fact, between 2021 and 2023, the Ligue 1 heavyweights boasted of a frontline consisting of world-beaters in Mbappe, Neymar and Messi. As scary as they looked on paper, teams found it easier to slice through PSG's press and cause their defence plenty of problems. Messi and Neymar left in 2023, while Mbappe left in 2024.
Ultimately, PSG scrapped their transfer strategy altogether, instead adopting a far more balanced and smarter plan. They gambled on youth as well as their academy, with the squad shimmered with experienced figures in almost every department.

Verratti believes Mbappe leaving was not a factor in PSG's UCL glory
Speaking in an interview with , Verratti opened up on his time at Parc des Princes. He was asked why Les Parisiens managed to lift the Champions League trophy immediately after Mbappe's departure.
"It's unfair to see it that way," began Verratti. "With Kylian, we reached the semi-finals and the final, but we didn't win it. Then there's Real Madrid, who, with fantastic players, won it many times. Anyway, I don't think PSG won it because Kylian left. Mbappe has helped the club grow a lot. The year he left, he scored nearly 50 goals, for example."
When asked why the formidable front three of Mbappe, Neymar, and Messi couldn't help PSG succeed on the continental front, Verratti responded: "That's what makes football beautiful. It's not just about buying players and winning. That PSG team was a serious project, and they helped the club grow. Individually, we had many star players, but we lacked something as a team. And that matters a lot in today's football. In big games, star players can make the difference, but not generally."
Mbappe in unstoppable form for Real Madrid
Despite a record-breaking debut campaign for Real Madrid, where Mbappe scored 44 goals in 59 games, there was a feeling that the France captain was yet to deliver his devastating best for his dream club. All doubts surrounding Mbappe's status in Madrid have been dismissed with authority. The Madrid No.10 has begun the 2025-26 on fire, scoring 16 goals in 13 games for Los Blancos. He has scored in all but two games this season for both club and country, his goals against Atletico Madrid and Barcelona proving that he is morphing into the man for the big occasions.
Verratti went so far as to claim that Mbappe is the best player in the world right now. "He had to adapt, but he scored a lot of goals and won the Pichichi and the Golden Boot. And this year he's showing he could do even better. There's no one else like him in the world right now," the Italian midfielder said.

Glory with Madrid on Mbappe's mind
Mbappe’s debut season came during one of Real Madrid’s most disappointing campaigns in recent memory. The 15-time Champions League winners failed to secure any major silverware and were comfortably outclassed by sides of comparable quality.
He has already shared his ambition of "winning everything there is to win" at Real Madrid, and it seems he has taken the responsibility upon himself to guide Los Blancos towards glory. While there's still a long way to go, the start from Mbappe and his team-mates has been near flawless.
Eddie Howe’s Newcastle have built their season on defensive solidity.
Heading into their clash with Arsenal, the Magpies boasted the lowest expected goals conceded (xGA) in the league at 2.5, highlighting just how compact and resilient they had been.
That statistic shifted after Arsenal generated 2.04 xG at St James’ Park, pushing Newcastle down to second-best in the league.
Even so, Howe’s side have only conceded five goals all season while keeping four clean sheets, with only Liverpool and Arsenal managing to find the net against them.
Against the Gunners, Newcastle were disciplined and well-drilled, often forcing Mikel Arteta’s side into less threatening areas.
Yet all that hard work was undone in the 96th minute, when Gabriel Magalhães rose highest to score the winner.
How Gabriel helped to down Newcastle
It was a bitter pill to swallow given how well Newcastle had restricted Arsenal, but Gabriel’s decisive intervention underlined the fine margins at this level.
The Brazilian’s influence was evident beyond his goal. He disrupted Nick Woltemade and marshalled the defensive line with authority.
His performance earned him a man-of-the-match rating of 8.6 – a reminder of just how important he is to Arsenal’s title push.
Even if there was that one blemish with Woltemade, it’s safe to say he’s become a force in the Premier League in recent years.
Gabriel’s journey at Arsenal since arriving from Lille in 2020 has been one of steady progression.
Now 27 years old and valued at around £70m by Transfermarkt, he has cemented his reputation as one of the Premier League’s most commanding centre-backs.
His partnership with William Saliba has been the bedrock of Arsenal’s recent success.
Together they have anchored a backline that has kept 29 clean sheets over the last two seasons, while goalkeeper David Raya has claimed consecutive Golden Glove awards.
Beyond his defensive qualities, Gabriel provides a consistent goal threat.
His headed winner against Newcastle was his 21st goal for Arsenal, a remarkable tally for a central defender.
That ability to contribute at both ends makes him invaluable to Mikel Arteta’s side. Statistically, he remains a well-rounded force.

Defensively, he averages 0.95 tackles, 0.46 challenges, and 1.6 blocks per 90, illustrating his balance of proactive interventions and last-ditch defending.
His dominance in the air, as demonstrated against Newcastle, adds yet another dimension to his game.
Arsenal'sGabrielMagalhaes and WilliamSaliba
Having also earned 15 caps for Brazil, Gabriel is now a figure of experience and consistency on the international stage.
If Arsenal are to go one better than last season, his blend of physicality, set-piece threat, and defensive nous will be central to their challenge.
But, do the Toon have their own answer to the big Brazilian?
Chalkboard
Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.
Newcastle's answer to Gabriel
While Gabriel left St James’ Park with the headlines, Malick Thiaw walked away with plenty of admirers after what has been described as an “outstanding” performance.
The 24-year-old German, a £30m signing from AC Milan, is only a handful of games into his Newcastle career but already looks like a player with huge potential.
Thiaw’s numbers against Arsenal painted the picture of a defender unfazed by one of the toughest attacking units in Europe.
He won four of his six aerial duels, cleared his lines eight times, and registered one interception.
Crucially, he was not dribbled past once, underlining his ability to stand his ground in one-v-one situations.
On the ball, he attempted 23 passes, completing 20, showing the composure that made him such an attractive signing.
He sits in the 95th percentile for pass completion among centre-backs in Europe (93.1%), completing almost 59 passes per match.
He averages 4.43 progressive passes per 90, nearly identical to Gabriel’s 4.79, and also attempts more progressive carries, at 0.60 per 90 compared to Gabriel’s 0.38.
Defensively, Thiaw’s 1.19 tackles per 90 outstrip Gabriel’s 0.95, while he also makes 0.70 blocks per 90.
These numbers highlight subtle differences in style. Gabriel excels in last-ditch defending and aerial duels, while Thiaw appears more proactive in stepping out to intercept and more comfortable driving play forward.
Both are commanding presences, titans at the back, but Thiaw’s on-ball security may give Newcastle an edge in building from the back once Eddie Howe’s attacking system clicks.
The prospect of the summer arrival forming a long-term partnership with Sven Botman is tantalising.
Newcastle defender Sven Botman.
Botman’s anticipation and positional discipline, combined with Thiaw’s composure, could provide Newcastle with a defensive pairing to rival Arsenal’s Gabriel-Saliba axis.
Against Arsenal, Thiaw didn’t just look like a stopgap in Fabian Schär’s absence – he looked like a centre-half ready to shape Newcastle’s future.
His performance against the Gunners suggested he has the physicality, intelligence, and technical quality to become one of the Premier League’s standout defenders.
If Newcastle’s rise continues, Thiaw could be at the heart of it.
Newcastle can axe Gordon by unleashing 18-year-old who's "similar to Mbappe"
Anthony Gordon hasn’t been at the races this season for Newcastle United.
Guglielmo Vicario joined an elite club after bailing Tottenham out in the Champions League draw as the Monaco boss, Sebastien Pocognoli, accused the goalkeeper of time-wasting. The keeper turned into an immovable wall as Spurs clung on for a gritty 0-0 draw against a dominant Monaco side. The Italian shot-stopper produced a string of outstanding saves to rescue his side from what could have been a humiliating defeat.
Heroic Vicario saves Spurs from Monaco meltdown
While the stats showed Monaco launched 23 shots at the Tottenham goal, none found their way past Vicario. And according to Squawka, the keeper kept out 2.68 expected goals and emerged as one of the four shot-stoppers to make more than eight saves to keep a clean sheet for an English side in the last 10 campaigns, following in the footsteps of Alisson Becker, Nick Pope and David De Gea. Monaco, still without Paul Pogba, threw everything at Tottenham. They pressed high, moved the ball with purpose, and flooded Vicario’s box with attacks. Folarin Balogun, the former Arsenal man, seemed destined to haunt his old North London rivals but found Vicario in inspired form. The Italian denied him three times in the opening half alone, including one fingertip save that drew applause even from the home supporters. Just before the break, he pulled off another stunning stop to keep out Maghnes Akliouche, keeping Spurs in the contest despite Monaco’s relentless assault. Four in the first half alone, followed by several more in the second, including a sensational reaction stop from Thilo Kehrer’s close-range header. Then came his crowning moment, when he made an extraordinary reflex block from Jordan Teze, diving full stretch to prevent what looked like a certain goal.

Frank praises his keeper’s “exceptional” night
Tottenham boss Thomas Frank, who cut a relieved figure at full-time, was quick to defend his goalkeeper’s recent critics.
"I think the two goals against Villa, I don't think it's mistakes. I don't think it's any of that. It was two great finishes," Frank countered. "What I would say, I think he was very good today. I think some of the saves were exceptional. He's a big part of why we got a hard-fought point, but at the end of the day, it can be a crucial point."
For Frank, the result was as much about resilience as it was about performance.
"It was a game [with a] relatively even first half and then a second half, where I think Monaco was better than us, where we didn't hit the performance we want," he said.
"I think we lacked a bit of intensity overall in the game, especially the second half and that combined with a day where we didn't get too many players at a good enough level — that can happen. I think we are learning Champions League and every game in Champions League is difficult, especially away games against a good Monaco side. A Monaco side which I also think it's fair to say they had the best half of the season against us.
"Fair play to them and then the ability for us to compete in the Premier League and then in the Champions League is a challenge we are up for and want to. It's fair to say, last year we finished 17th and competed in Europa League, so we are taking it step by step. And it's not the worst thing on a bad day to get a point and a clean sheet."
Monaco’s frustration boils over
While Tottenham celebrated a hard-fought point, Monaco’s manager Pocognoli was left seething. The Belgian boss accused Vicario of time-wasting, claiming the keeper was deliberately slowing the game to frustrate his side.
"Vicario was outstanding, he make some great saves. He wasted also a lot of time between each free kick, long kicks," Pocognoli smiled. "He played a good game, but I think it's also because we were strong to create the chances. Good performance from him. Man of the match."
The draw leaves Tottenham 15th in the overall Champions League group rankings after three matches, with five points on the board. However, two of those games have been away, and Spurs remain unbeaten. It is something they’ve only managed once before in their opening three Champions League fixtures, back in 2017-18.

Focus shifts to Premier League action
Tottenham’s European campaign continues to gather momentum, even if their performances haven’t yet convinced the purists. Next up, they return to domestic duty with a Premier League clash against Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Sunday. Frank will be hoping for a bit more fluidity in attack after an inspired performance from Vicario saved their blushes.
Chelsea will be in the market come January to further their bid for silverware and could now be set to land a heavy discount on a target they have identified at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea set for defensive injury boost following Ornstein update
The Blues have been affected by their fair share of injury news lately, and their lack of depth in central defence was highlighted against Liverpool last weekend – a fixture that Trevoh Chalobah, Tosin Adarabioyo, Wesley Fofana and Levi Colwill missed due to various issues.
Josh Acheampong ended up starting in the pivotal victory over the Reds, though he had to be subbed off himself after picking up a knock during proceedings. David Ornstein doesn’t believe his misfortune is as serious as first feared.
Chelsea's Tyrique George celebrates scoring their third goal withJoshAcheampong
He stated via The Athletic’s Youtube Channel, also offering an update on Benoit Badiashile:
Trevoh Chalobah, returning from suspension, will also be a boost for the Blues, who have an away Premier League clash against Nottingham Forest to contend with before quickfire home fixtures against Ajax and Sunderland.
Signing a defender is a major priority in January for Chelsea, and that has only been heightened by the fact that Colwill has torn his ACL, so there will be no shortage of rumours on that front between now and the window opening for business.
With that in mind, attention will soon turn to potential mid-season solutions, and the Blues may now have identified a centre-back who they feel can make an instant impact at Stamford Bridge, should a deal materialise.
Chelsea could land heavy Castello Lukeba discount
According to CaughtOffside, Chelsea could land a heavy discount in their attempts to sign RB Leipzig defender Castello Lukeba, who has a release clause of just over £78 million.
Nevertheless, this stipulation is believed to be largely symbolic, and Leipzig are ‘ready to accept’ a potential bid in and around the £52 million mark.

Liverpool, Manchester United, Newcastle United and Real Madrid are also keen on the France Under-21 international, who has also registered one assist in seven matches across all competitions this season.
In light of their injury problems and frustration at relying on the likes of Wesley Fofana to be available, a discounted move for Lukeba, who’s been called a “very unique” defender, may be a way to solve fitness issues that have plagued Stamford Bridge this term.
Predominantly left-sided, Lukeba has won 26 duels already this term and carried the ball out successfully six times, per Fotmob, illustrating his suitability to Enzo Maresca’s high-octane style of play.
Now, it remains to be seen whether Chelsea can push a deal over the line amid serious interest from elsewhere in the French defender.
