Rangers heading for disaster over Joseph

Rangers are on the verge of making a massive mistake, if emerging reports are to be believed…

What’s the word?

According to Football Insider, the Glasgow giants are set to pull out of a move for Wigan Athletic starlet Kyle Joseph amid interest from their arch-rivals.

The 19-year-old attacker has suitors from Scotland and the Premier League after he snubbed a new contract offer from the League One outfit.

The Gers would only have to pay £300k in compensation but, in ending their pursuit, the door will be opened for Celtic to strike.

Another talent missed?

Much of the Light Blues’ recent success has to be attributed to both Steven Gerrard and the club’s recruitment team as the current squad finally put a stop to their crosstown rivals’ nine-year dominance in the Scottish Premiership. However, their stance on Joseph here has to be questioned.

It’s not the first time that the Ibrox club have missed out on a potential star from the lower leagues of English football – Jamie Vardy, for instance, very nearly became a Rangers player.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/rangers-news-ibrox-steven-gerrard-ross-wilson-gers-rfc” title=”Latest Rangers news, transfer rumours and more!”]

According to then-manager Ally McCoist, finances stopped the deal from happening. He told talkSPORT (via Daily Record) last summer: “I remember looking at him when he was at Fleetwood,” he said. “I couldn’t get the money to get him. I had John Brown, my chief scout, look at him two or three times. It was an absolute no-brainer but we couldn’t get the money to get him.”

The Gers legend added: “He’s been fantastic.” Indeed, since joining Leicester instead, Vardy has blossomed into one of the Premier League’s best strikers, having scored 115 times in 238 top-flight appearances, as per Transfermarkt.

The young Latics sensation is far from being on the same career trajectory as the Foxes star but there’s every hope that he could develop into something big.

Ex-Rangers academy graduate and former teammate Kal Naismith has previously tipped him to reach his full potential, saying: “He’ll be a top player, a really, really good player and he works his nuts off not just in the games but all week in training as well, he has a great appetite for the game and a great attitude.”

Injury has curtailed the majority of his season but, after making his senior debut in October, the 19-year-old hotshot went on to score five goals in just 14 appearances.

Rangers chief Ross Wilson cannot allow Gerrard to make the same mistake as McCoist. For just £300,000, the Scottish champions could land a real star of the future, and one who would likely develop substantially under the current coaching staff.

You only have to look at how Ryan Kent has turned around his career to see that. If the aforementioned report is true, then Gerrard may well be making a dangerous error.

ESL update could deal Spurs Kane blow

Tottenham Hotspur’s decision to join the European Super League could have some seriously dangerous consequences, especially when it comes their chances of keeping hold of Harry Kane.

This bombshell was revealed on Monday as Spurs became one of the ESL’s 12 founding clubs, something that has understandably gone down like a lead balloon across the footballing world.

Not only have supporters voiced their concerns but governing bodies like FIFA, UEFA and the Premier League among others have condemned the plans and are set to do all they can to stop the breakaway league from becoming a reality.

UEFA released a statement suggesting that they could pursue legal action over the proposals and insisted that those players involved in the new league would be banned from domestic, European and international competitions, whilst the rebel clubs could be booted out of these competitions too.

In addition to that, Spurs have also withdrawn from the European Club Association (ECA), which will only increase the prospect of them being unable to qualify for the Champions League or Europa League any longer.

The Lilywhites have been involved in one of the two European competitions for 11 straight seasons, and they made the UCL final in 2019. Daniel Levy’s decision to join the ESL takes away this privilege and two potential competitions that they could qualify for, and potentially win.

Kane’s future was already in doubt prior to this announcement, and will surely be in grave danger now, especially as he’s the England national team captain too.

[snack-amp-story url=https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-and-recent-gossip” title=”Read this week’s Spurs news, latest transfer rumours and more!]

The 27-year-old continues to break goalscoring records in England but ultimately, he has no silverware to back up what should’ve been an illustrious career so by limiting the competitions that Spurs play in, and potentially even risking their expulsion from the Premier League, Levy is playing a dangerous game if he wants the 219-goal striker to stay in north London.

In addition to that, if Kane stays and plays in the ESL, then his England career could well be over and that’s certainly something he will not want to lose as he has the potential of becoming the first Three Lions skipper to lift a trophy since Bobby Moore in 1966.

Gareth Southgate’s side have a chance to win the European Championships this summer, and barring any qualification issues, they could make a run at winning the World Cup in 2022 too, after reaching the semi-finals in 2018.

“I am looking forward to a really special couple of years with the Euros in the summer and then the World Cup in 2022,” revealed Kane back in October.

So Levy may well have just dealt Spurs a huge hammer blow in more ways than one, this news surely has Kane reeling in fury and that’s not a good thing when considering his long-term future in north London.

Of course, in any scenario where he chooses to leave in order to maintain his place in the England set-up, Kane wouldn’t be able to move to another Super League club as they too could see their players banned from representing their national teams.

However, there are still some huge clubs such as Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain who are not part of the breakaway and who could, in theory, still have the finances to purchase a player as good as Harry Kane. PSG have been linked with a move for Kane in the past too so a move to the French capital isn’t something that is beyond the realms of possibility.

If UEFA and co. get their way, Spurs will only have the ESL to play for and the fact that Spurs are one of the weaker sides of the Super League Founder Members makes it highly unlikely that they can win that competition either, so Kane is looking at a trophyless future, one where he can’t captain his country. Those factors will surely anger the Tottenham superstar and as a result, will put his future with the club in even more doubt.

AND in other news, here’s how Spurs could look under Ryan Mason with three forgotten stars returning…

Jewell full of praise for Marcelo Bielsa

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, former Wigan Athletic manager Paul Jewell believes Marcelo Bielsa deserves all the praise he gets because of the job he has done at Leeds United.

Bielsa managed to bring Leeds into the Premier League for the first time in 16 years and he did it with a limited budget compared to a lot of other clubs who had been in that league, such as Aston Villa and Norwich City.

The Argentine has earned rave reviews from fellow managers this season for what he has done for the game and what he’s achieved during his career, especially from Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola.

Speaking on what Bielsa has managed to do at Leeds and how he deserves all the credit despite not winning anything, Jewell said exclusively to FFC:

“What I like about Bielsa is, and I think he can speak English but he’s pulling our legs, so fair play to him, but what I like about him is that he doesn’t make excuses.

“The difference he’s made to those Leeds players like Dallas, Cooper and Ayling, the list is endless. They were Championship players, and not great ones, but he’s turned them into Premier League players.

“He deserves unbelievable credit and he won’t have a trophy at the end of the season, but what a manager he is.”

Some thought Leeds would struggle this season after not adding many players to their Championship winning squad, however, Bielsa has been able to squeeze every last drop of talent out of his players.

Bielsa has guided Leeds to what appears to be a top-half finish this season with Patrick Bamford upfront, who many people thought would not be able to cut it in the Premier League.

LFC fans want Oxlade-Chamberlain to leave

A number of Liverpool fans have been calling for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to be sold following a report linking him with a move away from Anfield.

The 27-year-old has had a curious Reds career in many ways, with plenty of highs and lows but not much middle ground in between.

After making a slow start for Liverpool, Oxlade-Chamberlain became a key figure during the second half of the 2017/18 season, before a cruciate ligament injury struck him down in his prime.

[freshpress-quiz id=“355458″]

In truth, the midfielder has never quite managed to have the same impact since then, finding himself in and out of the team because of fitness issues and form.

According to Fichajes, Borussia Dortmund are interested in signing Oxlade-Chamberlain at the end of the season, which would bring an end to four years at Anfield for him. It remains to be seen whether Jurgen Klopp sees the former Arsenal man as part of his plans moving forward, but Liverpool could still get a healthy fee for the midfielder.

These Reds supporters took to Twitter to provide their thoughts on the matter, admitting they would be happy to see Oxlade-Chamberlain move on. One also took a pop at midfield team-mate Naby Keita, another Liverpool player with an injury-blighted stint at Anfield.

Marsch could have brought a lot to Celtic

Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, former Premier League midfielder Lee Hendrie feels Jesse Marsch could have brought a lot to Celtic.

The RB Salzburg manager had been linked with the vacant Celtic job; however, he was recently named as the next RB Leipzig boss following Julian Nagelsmann’s decision to join Bayern Munich in the summer.

Eddie Howe now looks to be the only man for the gig at Celtic Park, though it does seem like he has always been the Glasgow giants’ No.1 choice, with reports suggesting that a deal could be wrapped up soon.

As far as alternatives go, though, Hendrie believes Marsch certainly could have been a good option for Celtic.

On the RB Salzburg boss, the ex-Aston Villa player told TT:

“I’m all for up-and-coming managers coming in with a great style and a great method. I just don’t know which way they’re going to turn. They’ve [Celtic] taken some time and they’ve really took their time on this one.”

Celtic will not want this to drag out for too much longer, as they need to get a start on their rebuild job as soon as possible after failing miserably in the Scottish Premiership title race this season.

As for Marsch, big things will be expected of him in Germany, with the 47-year-old arriving with a growing reputation after impressing many in the game, including Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.

Leeds must avoid transfer gaffe over Rose

Leeds must avoid a major transfer nightmare over Danny Rose after Paddy Kenny’s claim about signing him.

What’s the story?

The former Leeds academy starlet sees his contract at current club Tottenham expire in the summer, and the indications are that he will not be expected to renew his deal, with Turkish giants Trabzonspor reportedly after him.

With Gjanni Alioski set to make his own departure from Elland Road, Kenny has insisted that Rose would be a great signing for Marcelo Bielsa’s side to potentially fill that left-back slot.

The former goalkeeper told Football Insider: “If you can get Danny Rose on a free, that’s an absolute no-brainer. His contract is up soon and it doesn’t look like he’ll sign another. He didn’t have much to shout about at Newcastle, but these things happen.

“He’s got a lot of experience at Premier League level. He’d be an excellent player to add to their squad. You can see why he is a top priority for them (Trabzonspor). He’s got quality and sometimes you’ve got to take a step back to come forwards. He’d be a really good signing.”

Bielsa would be making a mistake

While Rose may have a wealth of Premier League and European experience, the full-back just isn’t anywhere near the same level that he was before, with The Athletic’s Roshane Thomas even saying that the 30-year-old is “on the decline”.

Sky Sports pundit Roy Keane blasted him as “dreadful” only last season, claiming that he and Serge Aurier were “Dumb and Dumber” after defeat to Liverpool at Anfield.

Speaking after a particularly awful display at international level with England, the Manchester United legend said: “Rose gave a performance tonight, my goodness, someone has got to get a hold of that guy. He was shocking, abysmal. I think he’ll be the same in another three or four years. Some players don’t learn from their mistakes, that’s a big problem and at the highest level you will suffer for it.”

The £60,000-per-week ace hasn’t made a single first team appearance all season, while Newcastle decided against bringing him back after a spell on loan at St James’ Park last year.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Leeds transfer rumours and news!”]

Leeds need to be moving forward, not back, and signing Rose would likely be a major nightmare for Bielsa. Paying a big wage packet for a player way past his prime, and whose form and fitness has been widely questioned, just doesn’t seem the right call to make.

It’s not the “absolute no-brainer” Kenny says it is.

Meanwhile, Leeds must finally offload this forgotten man who “Bielsa never trusted”…

Derby fans happy with takeover update

A number of Derby County supporters have been left happy with the news that a planned takeover of the club has now officially been called off.

The Rams ensured they remained in the Championship for another season last weekend, following a breathless final day – providing they survive a possible points deduction.

Wayne Rooney’s side may only have managed to draw 3-3 at home to Sheffield Wednesday, but Rotherham’s failure to win away to Cardiff City meant Derby stayed up.

It was a huge relief for everyone associated with the club, with hope that they can now push onto bigger and better things with Rooney at the helm.

Talk surrounding a takeover taking place at Pride Park has not been met with resounding positivity however, but that news has now taken a twist.

According to BBC Sport, Spanish businessman Erik Alonso’s proposed takeover of Derby has fallen through, with his company, No Limit Sports Limited, failing to complete a deal.

Leeds’ remarkable away statistic revealed

Leeds United’s away record under Marcelo Bielsa has been highlighted by an incredible statistic which emerged after their victory at Burnley this weekend.

The Lowdown: Leeds thump Burnley

The Whites were at their brilliant best on Saturday afternoon, winning 4-0 at Turf Moor and producing a scintillating second half performance. Mateusz Klich’s 44th-minute goal was later supplemented by a Jack Harrison strike and a brace from Rodrigo as Leeds’ impressive first season back in the Premier League continues.

The Latest: Superb statistic emerges

Bielsa’s side have excelled on the road in 2020/21 and Leeds-supporting Opta statistician Jonny Cooper revealed on Twitter how impressive they have been in away fixtures with regards to their record after scoring the first goal in a match:

“Truly bonkers away record under Marcelo Bielsa when scoring first. 30 wins from 31 games, 70 goals scored and only 14 conceded.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-2/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Memorable season for Leeds

The eye-opening statistic is a testament to the job that Bielsa is doing, with the Turf Moor triumph being Leeds’ ninth away win in this season’s Premier League. In that 31-match sequence, the 3-1 defeat at Chelsea in December is the only away game where they have lost after scoring first.

The Whites are not only a technically-gifted side with an admirable work ethic, but they are also resolute. Once they go ahead, opponents find it quite hard to get back into the game, and hopefully they can take this form with them into Elland Road next season also.

Tottenham could be offered Martial

According to a report by Football Insider, Premier League rivals Manchester United could now offer Tottenham Hotspur the chance to sign Anthony Martial in a part exchange deal for superstar striker Harry Kane.

The Lowdown: Kane exit saga in full swing…

Sky Sports recently broke the news that Kane has reiterated his desire to leave Tottenham Hotspur after yet another year in north London without any silverware.

Indeed, the 27-year-old has even been at the centre of enquires from the likes of United, Man City and Chelsea – with Spurs even making enquiries of their own into replacement strikers.

The reports don’t seem likely to go away any time soon, and Spurs could be set for a summer-long transfer saga surrounding the Englishman.

The Latest: United could now offer Martial to Spurs

Bringing the latest, Football Insider are claiming that Tottenham could now be offered £250,000-per-week Man United star Martial in a part exchange deal for Kane this summer.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-gossip/” title=”Spurs gossip” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

A Manchester United source, speaking to the outlet, claims the Red Devils are lining up an offer but are unlikely to meet chairman Daniel Levy’s sky high valuation of around £150 million.

To lower the price, Tottenham could now be offered both Martial and current West Ham loanee Jesse Lingard.

Kane is said to be ‘certain’ of his desire to quit Spurs and United want an A-list centre forward despite their agreement to tie down Edinson Cavani to a one-year deal.

The Verdict: Good deal?

At 25-years-old, Martial is arguably a proven force in the Premier League already – having scored 17 goals whilst notching another six assists in 31 top flight starts last campaign (WhoScored).

While he hasn’t been able to improve on those numbers over 2020/2021, the winger still has plenty of years ahead of him and has averaged the third-most completed dribbles out of any first team regular in the United squad this season.

Once dubbed ‘unplayable’ by former Spurs midfielder Micheal Carrick (The Mirror), who played with Martial at Old Trafford, there are certainly plus points to this being the move if Kane is absolutely going to leave.

Of course, there is the argument that there is no way he can fill the void left by Kane – and this possible agreement may come down to the fee United offer alongside both Martial and Lingard.

Newcastle plotting Dickie transfer

Newcastle United are reportedly plotting a move to sign Rob Dickie in the summer transfer window.

The Lowdown: Newcastle must improve defensively

Having conceded no fewer than 62 goals in the Premier League going into the final day of the season, which is the fifth-worst record out of any team in the division (BBC Sport), the St. James’ Park outfit certainly need to improve defensively.

They cannot always rely on the likes of Callum Wilson to bail them out with the goals that he offers, especially if he finds himself injured for as long as he did in this campaign.

Thus, a new central defender would be an ideal signing to make in order to make Steve Bruce’s team more solid.

The Latest: Newcastle plot Dickie transfer

As per Football Insider, the Tyneside club are plotting a move to bring Dickie to the North East.

They have held a long-term interest in the QPR ace and considered signing him last summer before he joined Rangers from Oxford United.

A source from the Magpies has told the news outlet that Bruce wants to strengthen his defensive options, and Dickie has emerged as a top target.

The former Aston Villa and Sunderland boss is a big admirer and has been keeping tabs on him since he impressed against the Toon in two matches in the FA Cup in the 2019/20 term with Oxford.

NUFC see the Englishman as someone with huge potential who can develop and potentially offer them huge resale value in the future.

The Verdict: Newcastle should sign Dickie

Given the potential that Dickie has, and the fact that he is still only 25 years of age, it would be a smart buy for Newcastle, especially if the club are right about him potentially boasting a big resale value.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-updates-3/” title=”Newcastle updates! (3)” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Described as a ‘very talented’ player by Mark Warburton upon signing him as QPR manager back in September, the six-foot-one ace has taken the EFL Championship by storm, winning a mammoth 8.1 of his duels per game, while also averaging four clearances, 1.8 interceptions and 1.3 tackles a match, helping his side keep no fewer than 14 clean sheets in the process (Sofascore).

Nonetheless, Dickie is ready to make the step up to the Premier League, and the Magpies can give him that opportunity.
