Taylor, Styris star in hard-earned win for New Zealanders

New Zealanders endured poor passages of play in the latter stages of either innings, but did enough to seal victory against Sri Lanka Board President’s XI in their first match on tour. The win was easier than suggested by the eventual three-wicket margin, as Ross Taylor and Scott Styris struck fluent fifties before the visitors crossed the line with 72 balls to spare.BP XI elected to bat first, but did not account for their opponents’ inspired fast-bowling pack. Things began to go awry in the third over when Daryl Tuffey breached Mahela Udawatte’s defence with nine runs on the board. Dinesh Chandimal was run out for two in the next over, exposing the middle order. They did not fare too well as three wickets fell for the addition of just one run: Lahiru Thirimanne edged Tuffey behind, while Chamara Silva and Thilina Kandamby did likewise against Tim Southee and Jacob Oram respectively. The score read 34 for 5 in 12 overs and BP XI desperately needed a repair job.Kosala Kulasekara put his head down in the company of Milinda Siriwardana and they steadied the ship, adding 29 in 10.4 overs before Clint McKay got into the flow of things, getting the former to give Gareth Hopkins his fourth catch behind the wickets. With both teams having twelve players to choose from, BP XI were batting fairly deep and it worked in their favour. Farveez Maharoof kept Siriwardana company for a 64-run stand for the seventh wicket, off 93 balls. Just when they looked set to step up, New Zealanders managed to dismiss both batsmen before they could reach fifties. That the hosts had something to bowl at was down to the effort of Thisara Perera who stunned the bowlers with an impressive assault. Southee suffered the most damage, going for 64 while the rest of his colleagues finished with respectable figures. Perera smashed eight fours and two sixes in his unbeaten 39-ball 62, as the last 7.5 overs went for 81 runs. Seekkuge Prasanna gave him good support, lashing a six and two fours in his 18 as BP XI finished with 219.New Zealanders’ chase faced an early setback when Nuwan Pradeep got BJ Watling to nick one behind for four. However, Martin Guptill and Ross Taylor made light of his fall, adding 65 at better than a-run-a-ball. Guptill struck three fours in his 33-ball 26 before Prasanna struck him in front of the stumps. Thereafter Scott Styris laced into the bowling in an aggressive partnership with Taylor to put the result beyond doubt.Taylor played some pleasing shots, picking seven fours and a six before Kandamby sent him back after a partnership of 95 in 14.1 overs. Styris smashed two sixes and five fours, racing to 57 off 45 balls before he too fell to Kandamby’s wiles in the 30th over. New Zealanders had a few nervous moments, losing Grant Elliott and Hopkins, with 23 runs still to get. Oram however held one end up while Tuffey lashed four fours to ensure there was no upset.

In Focus: Leeds handed boost in Flint pursuit

According to The Mirror, Bristol City are ready to sell centre-back Aden Flint this summer, with Leeds United strongly placed to sign the 6ft 5in defender.

What’s the story?

Flint, 28, is widely regarded as one of the most effective central defenders in the second tier of English football, and a number of clubs have been linked with a move in recent weeks.

Bristol City were initially expected to fight off interest in the former Swindon Town youngster, but according to The Mirror, the club’s recent capture of Nathan Baker from Aston Villa means that they will allow the centre-back to seek pastures new this summer.

The Mirror has claimed that Leeds are offering Flint a big pay rise on his current salary, but the team from Elland Road will face competition from Birmingham City, who believe that they are the favourites for his signature ahead of the new campaign.

Flint helped Swindon win League Two during the 2011-12 campaign, and has since progressed onto League One and into the Championship, where he has played his football in each of the last two seasons.

Why are Leeds so keen?

Well, aside from the fact that Flint is a 6ft 5in centre-back, he has also forced a reputation as a goalscoring defender over the last few seasons.

Incredibly, Flint, who is rated at £850,000 by transfermarkt.co.uk, has netted 29 times in 200 professional appearances, with his best scoring season coming during the 2014-15 campaign, when he scored 14 League One goals.

He has managed six and five goals respectively for Bristol City in each of the last two Championship seasons, and his ability from set pieces has made him an extremely effective weapon.

Leeds will seemingly face strong interest from Birmingham for a player that has previously represented England C, but if the former Champions League club can secure his signature, it might well be one of the Championship’s best signings in this summer’s transfer window.

Five images that summed up Man United 2-0 Watford

Manchester United stretched their impressive Premier League unbeaten streak with a convincing and comfortable win over Watford at Old Trafford on Saturday.

In command from start to finish, United looked at their best against Walter Mazzarri’s side, confidently taking the game to their visitors and supplying the clinical finishes required to pick up all three points.

Anthony Martial was the catalyst for the win, setting up Juan Mata for his opener before helping himself to a second half goal himself.

It was important for United to pick up all three points as they don’t play in the Premier League again until March with European and cup football coming to fore over the next few weeks. Fighting on four fronts, United continue to go from strength to strength under Mourinho.

Watford can take some positives from the match themselves but a lack of cutting edge in the final third cost them.

Here are the FIVE photos that summed up all the action…

Gomes’ great wall

Manchester United peppered Watford’s goal throughout the first half with only Heurelho Gomes able to stop the Red Devils taking an early lead.

The former Spurs goalkeeper played a starring role in this period, making a number of key saves before Mourinho’s men finally made the breakthrough.

He proved he still has what it takes to be a very effective Premier League shot stopper.

Mata making it happen

United eventually created a chance that couldn’t be denied, even by Gomes, when Juan Mata forged space for himself in the box to receive Martial’s fine cross. The young Frenchman’s contribution to the goal was superb, surging down United’s left hand side on the overlap to get in behind the Watford defence.

Picking out Mata expertly, the Spaniard couldn’t miss from 7 yards and slotted home without trouble. From that point on, the Red Devils never looked like losing.

Magic Martial

Anthony Martial was again at the heart of the action when he combined with Zlatan Ibrahimovic to find himself free in the box with an opportunity at goal. A consistently fine finisher, he made no mistake, smashing the ball into the back of the net.

It gave United the cushion they needed to prevent any drama in the second half, effectively killing the game off and allowing Jose Mourinho to make changes with an eye on a heavy schedule ahead.

Mourinho’s march

The journey Mourinho has taken Manchester United on since the summer has at times been a rocky one but even the most pessimistic fan has to admit he’s transformed the Red Devils into a side more akin to Sir Alex Ferguson’s than David Moyes’.

It’s a journey that only looks like ending with one thing, UEFA Champions League football. Finishing in the top four must be the key aim for Mourinho in the closing stages of the season. It would be a fantastic achievement.

Playing with style and confidence, United are a joy to watch right now.

They are contending for silverware in three other competitions too and if Mourinho can bring United deep into the Europa League and FA Cup then it has the potential to be one of the best United seasons for quite a while.

Wasteful Watford

Walter Mazzarri will find positives with his side’s performance but must be frustrated his side couldn’t make it stick in the final third.

They performed well on the counter-attack, effectively bringing the ball forward from defence, but that lack of cutting edge when approaching Man United’s box cost them dear. They were unable to find the final pass or the shot at goal to really punish Mourinho’s side and made it all too easy for United to roll them over.

Still, it’s a tough shift at Old Trafford and the manager showed his appreciation at the end to the travelling Watford fans.

Crystal Palace boss in charge of England? It might not be so daft

Popular, good English managers who manage in the Premier League are hard to find these days. There are only a handful in the division who have been a consistent fixture for over a couple of years, yet many have been overlooked when it comes to the England job. Sam Allardyce seems to believe that he is Three Lions manager material and should have been given a chance – something which has often been laughed at by fans across the country. However with Hodgson’s contract due to end after EURO 2016,  and with many fans wanting change, one name has been popping up more than usual. That name, is Alan Pardew.

Pardew, the current Crystal Palace manager, and ex-Eagles player knows the English leagues well. As a player he played a lot of non-league football in his early years, before moving to Palace, becoming famous for scoring the winning goal against Liverpool in the FA Cup in 1990, writing him into the club’s history books. His managerial career has seen him take posts at many different clubs, starting at Reading in the Championship before moving to West Ham in the Premier  League in 2003, and it was there for three years where he made history, leading West Ham to the FA Cup final where they were cruelly beaten by Liverpool on penalties after drawing 3-3 in normal time. Pardew also pulled off an absolute steal when he bought Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano to the Premier League, both players to become well known in the future – albeit the deals were controversial. He then had spells at Charlton and Southampton, before really coming to the fore at Newcastle.

It was at St James’ Park where Pardew started making his name, replacing the popular Chris Hughton with a massive mountain to climb. However, after his first game – a 3-1 win over Liverpool – things were looking up for the manager. In 2011 Pardew’s Newcastle made the news when, 4-0 down to Arsenal at half-time, they clawed back to finish the match 4-4, proving that Pardew was a force to be reckoned with. He ended up winning manager of the season in 2012, and went on to manage some great players that would become big Premier League names: players like Demba Ba, who later joined Chelsea, Yohan Cabaye, who got a move to PSG before returning to work with Pardew at Palace and Mathieu Debuchy, who got a move to Arsenal. It highlighted the quality that Pardew helped to create and mould at Newcastle, and in turn helped the club move back into European competition.

Yet the good times did not come, and a mixture of public spats and a controversial owner helped to mar Pardew’s time at Newcastle. There were often protests calling for Pardew out from 2013, and touchline antics such as over celebrating against Sunderland in 2012, pushing the linesman in 2012, calling Pellegrini a f****** old c*** in 2014, and the low point of head-butting Hull’s David Meyler on the 11th March 2014 all showed he was not just over passionate, but perhaps not enjoying himself fully at a club. The pressure built up on Pardew, and in January 2015 he was hired at Crystal Palace.

Pardew’s spell at Palace has shown him to be a manager truly enjoying his football and football management. So why then is he being linked to the England job with all of the worries over his actions? Well as a manager at Palace he looks more mature, and is able to lead the team well. Considering there are not many English managers able to manage consistently well in the league, it is only right that Pardew should be linked with the job. If he continues to perform at Palace this season, as well as behave, then there is no reason why when the FA mull over Hodgson’s contract, Pardew doesn’t deserve to be in their thoughts.

The precociously-gifted 16-year-old has burst onto the senior stage in 2023, becoming a full international with Spain, and records continue to tumble around him – as they once did with Argentine icon Messi. The promising midfielder boasts creative quality in abundance, with Xavi of the opinion that he can be likened to superstars of Barca’s recent past. He has said of Yamal’s ability when running with the ball: “He’s got the ability in one-on-one situations, you have to look for him. As with [Ousmane] Dembele, with Messi… we must get the ball to him. We have to make the most of it and give this type of player a boost.”

Yamal is drawing obvious comparisons with Messi, who made his own breakthrough at Barca while still in his teens, and Xavi intends to handle the youngster with care. He added on emulating the efforts of his predecessors, who ensured that Messi was never pushed too far: “They are good examples, [Frank] Rijkaard’s management with Leo. He had injuries at the beginning. We have to be cautious with Lamine. He will help us.”

WHAT THEY SAID

Barcelona will be hoping that Yamal does not pick up any untimely knocks on Friday when he goes up against a Sevilla side that boasts plenty of no-nonsense defenders. Xavi said: “We treat him like someone who is 16 years old, who is in training. We are very close to him. We see him well when he’s in training. He’ll be up against [Sergio] Ramos or [Jesus] Navas, competitive animals at 36.”

-Eu me sinto muito bem. Me sinto em casa.

E convocou a Nação:

– Eu me cuidei bastante nas férias.

Ticket fiasco as fans locked out of near-empty Nagpur stadium

Fans without tickets were turned away from Scotland’s World T20 match against Zimbabwe at the VCA stadium in Nagpur today, as there are no ticketing facilities available at the ground. The tickets for the match are priced at 100 rupees for the East and West stands and 200 rupees for behind the bowler’s arm (approx £1.10 and £2.20 respectively). However, many supporters were obliged to travel back to the old VCA stadium in central Nagpur to purchase their tickets, meaning that that those that chose to do so were forced to miss much of the contest. The current stadium, which was inaugurated in 2008 and has a capacity of 45,000, lies 20km outside the city centre, a journey time of approximately 40 minutes by auto-rickshaw. However, the main ticketing system remains still situated at the old venue. A VCA official said it was not possible to have ticketing at both grounds. The BCCI, who declined to comment, are in overall charge of the ticketing policy for the tournament, but the arrangements for each match are at the discretion of the individual state associations. Dharamsala, the other venue that has so far hosted matches, has chosen to sell tickets for the qualifying rounds at the gate. The VCA spokesman added that advertisements for the ticketing policy had been placed in local papers but was unable to explain why the information had not been passed on to the BCCI or ICC, so they could warn fans who were travelling in from other grounds. The atmosphere inside the stadium, which came in for heavy criticism on the opening day of the tournament, was marginally improved for today’s contest, thanks to an influx of some 250 children from nearby schools. However, approximately 100 fans remained locked out of the ground at the start of Zimbabwe’s innings. The venue is too remote to support any local pubs or cafes in which to watch the contest, or to access the ICC’s online ticket-booking service that could have resolved the issue.”We love cricket, which is why we are here even in this heat to watch Scotland take on Zimbabwe,” one group of college students from Nagpur told ESPNcricinfo. “But we can’t book online because of the network and the ticket sales are going on at the other ground. There’s so few people in, why can’t they just let us in. We are even willing to pay at the gate.”One group of Scotland fans, who encountered similar problems during Tuesday’s opening round of fixtures, including Scotland’s defeat against Afghanistan, had been mistakenly informed that they could buy their tickets at their hotel.Privately ICC officials are frustrated that common sense has not been used, especially with the already low turn out for these matches.
