Australia consider a late change

Australia appear set to make a late change to their line-up for the second Test in Hyderabad after earlier indications were that they would use the same XI that lost in Chennai. Cricket Australia did not reveal the nature of the change but the most likely scenario is that it would surround the makeup of the attack on a pitch that the captain Michael Clarke said would take turn from the first day but also hoped would offer more for the fast men than the Chennai surface. The backup spinners in the squad, Xavier Doherty and Glenn Maxwell, could be considered, while a pace-for-pace swap involving Mitchell Johnson is another possibility. On Friday morning the indications were that Australia would name an unchanged line-up but Clarke said the selectors would not commit to an XI until after seeing the pitch again during the afternoon.*”I’m hoping there will be a bit more pace in this wicket because it’s a bit harder surface,” Clarke said before the team’s training session on Friday. “I don’t think this wicket will be any tougher than Chennai. That was a really tough wicket, so I think we have seen the toughest of conditions.”The wicket will certainly deteriorate as the Test goes on, so it’s a positive for our fast bowlers that it will be a little bit up and down. But spin from day one will play a huge part in this Test. I’d be very surprised if India played any less spin, put it that way. Looking at it yesterday, it looked like a day three or day four pitch.”Two days out from the match, there were already a few cracks developing but the surface did not have the clay-like appearance of the Chennai pitch. The harder surface should give a little more encouragement to Mitchell Starc, Peter Siddle and James Pattinson, although Clarke said Starc and Siddle would still need to learn from the way that Pattinson used speed through the air as his major weapon rather than relying on assistance from the pitch.”You have to hit the wicket really hard here,” Clarke said. “If you just put the ball there you get nothing out of the conditions, even if the ball is reverse swinging. In Chennai it was really hard to be caught behind the wicket once the ball was 10-15 overs old, so we needed to use our speed through the air. I think Patto did that really well – he ran in hard, hit the wicket really hard and he got more out of the pitch, and more out of the ball than Sidds and Starcy. We’ve certainly spoken about that.”Siddle and Starc are not the only members of the attack who will need to rethink their strategy after struggling in Chennai. Nathan Lyon leaked far too many runs in the first Test and will need to find a way to keep things tighter if he plays in Hyderabad. Clarke said Lyon had shown some encouraging signs towards the end of the Chennai Test.”On grounds in India it’s very easy to go for a lot more runs because they’re smaller and have fast outfields,” Clarke said. “I thought Lyno showed his character in the second innings. I wish we had 150-200 runs on the board because then he would have had the opportunity to bowl in inconsistent spin, pace and bounce on a day-five wicket that I know he would have loved. He’s been fine [since the Test]. He’s working hard every day to try and get better.”I think it’s important for all of us as a team to stay positive and confident. We saw what happened with England over here. For a lot of the guys, it was their first Test match in India and those conditions are as tough as they are going to be for a fast-bowling unit and the batsmen. I think there are a lot of positives we’ve got to take out of the game, we’ve looked at areas we need to improve and a lot of that is about patience with both bat and ball.”Clarke said he was confident that Doherty, the other specialist spinner in the touring party, would offer plenty to the team if he was added to the XI. Doherty’s first-class figures of 122 wickets at 44.56 do not make for encouraging reading, nor does the fact that he has managed only two wickets at 80 this Sheffield Shield season. But Clarke said it was unfair to extrapolate how Doherty might fare in India from how he bowls at home.”He’s bowling at Bellerive (Bellerive Oval, Hobart),” Clarke said. “I think that’s a little bit different to Chennai or Chandigarh. I think if you have a look at fast bowling in Australia compared to spin bowling, because of our conditions in first-class cricket, fast bowling will always outweigh spin bowling. I’m surprised a spinner gets a bowl at Bellerive because the game is nearly over in two-and-a-half days. I don’t think it would be fair on any of our spinners to compare their statistics in Australia to how important their impact could be in the sub-continent.”13.55GMT, March 1: The article was updated following Australia’s practice session on Friday.

Tons from Shaun Marsh and Cameron Green put Western Australia on top

South Australia took just four wickets on the opening day of a new season with Green warming up for the Ashes in fine style

Alex Malcolm24-Sep-2021A new Sheffield Season brought the same old story for South Australia as the evergreen Shaun Marsh and the run machine Cameron Green plundered centuries to put Western Australia on top on the opening day at Karen Rolton Oval in Adelaide.Marsh, 38, produced a vintage masterclass to score his 20th Sheffield Shield century in his 21st season for WA and passed 8000 Shield runs in the process joining Justin Langer, Tom Moody, and Michael Hussey as the only WA players to have achieved that feat.Green, 22, is well on his way to joining those greats scoring his seventh Shield century and his eighth first-class hundred in his last 35 innings. The pair shared a 199-run stand on a beautiful batting surface. They scored with ease all around the ground striking 25 fours and six sixes between them. They were particularly savage on South Australia’s three spinners Travis Head, Lloyd Pope, and Sam Kerber.Redbacks’ attack looked toothless despite identifying their bowling as a key area of improvement during the off-season. They didn’t help themselves in the field either. Green was dropped at slip on 63 off David Grant when Head was the culprit grassing the sharp chance low to his left. Pope later dropped Marsh on 115 but it didn’t cost them as much with Marsh falling to a spectacular catch at cover from Kerber shortly after. They were fortunate to nab Green for 106 as he looked determined to add to his four career scores of 150-plus. He made a strange error getting his gloves too close to the ball in an attempt to leave and was caught behind. Nathan McAndrew toiled hard on his Redbacks debut to pick up three of the four wickets to fall. He struck early in the day trapping Cameron Bancroft lbw with a ball that nipped back sharply off the seam. Sam Whiteman played nicely for his 44 but was bounced out by Grant.Hilton Cartwright and Josh Philippe negotiated the second new ball late in the day giving WA a chance to push for a huge first innings total on day two.

Wainwright spins Derbyshire to win

Derbyshire’s impressive start to the season continued as they crushed Glamorgan by eight wickets with a day to spare in the Derby. Glamorgan’s fragile batting failed again with only Will Bragg offering any resistance with 78 as they collapsed to 188 all out in their second innings against the spin of David Wainwright, who took 5 for 51, and Wes Durston 3 for 43.That left Derbyshire needing only 70 and they took less than 13 overs to seal a 23-point victory which leaves them on top of Division Two and Glamorgan rooted to the bottom. The visitors’ chances of making a fight of it looked good when they wiped out Derbyshire’s lead of 119 with only three wickets down but they crumbled on a pitch taking turn and lost their last seven wickets for only 65 runs.Derbyshire had also lost cheap wickets in the morning when the pace of Hugh Waters and Simon Jones ran through the tail leaving skipper Wayne Madsen stranded on 130 not out. The home side were already 99 in front but they lost the last five wickets for 19 in nine overs to set the tone for a day of bowling domination.Jones got some lift to remove Wainwright in the second over of the day and Waters belatedly got his reward for a wholehearted performance by quickly removing Jon Clare and Tom Poynton. Waters knocked over the injured Mark Footitt, who batted with a runner, to finish with 3 for 78 but Glamorgan were soon in trouble when both openers went before lunch.Tim Groenewald struck twice in his third over by pinning Gareth Rees in front and knocking out Nick James’s off stump when he offered no shot to reduce the visitors to 6 for 2 and Durston struck a big blow when Marcus North edged a drive to slip when on 21. However, Bragg and Ben Wright appeared to be putting their team back in the game when they added 66 in 18 overs but when Wainwright and Durston removed them in successive overs, Derbyshire scented victory.Mark Wallace made 29 before he edged a drive at Wainwright, who took four of the last five wickets, the final one thanks to a stunning one-handed catch at cover by Madsen. The only question was whether Derbyshire could wrap up victory before the close but Martin Guptill with 30 from 23 balls and an unbeaten 21 from Paul Borrington ensured the home dressing room was celebrating a third Championship win before 6pm.

'100th hundred the toughest of them all' – Tendulkar

Sachin Tendulkar has said his 100th international hundred “was the toughest of them all”, after achieving the milestone against Bangladesh, in Mirpur, during the Asia Cup. Tendulkar went 33 innings without a century between India’s group match against South Africa in the World Cup and Friday’s game in Mirpur, and admitted it had been a “tough phase”. He said he had not really started thinking about the 100th hundred until the media began to talk about it, but it had started to play on his mind after a while.”Yes, I have to be honest. I am human and I have emotions so I was frustrated. It does play on your mind,” Tendulkar said at the post-match press conference.During the mid-innings break, he had explained to television commentator Ramiz Raja how he had not been able to get away from talk about his 100th hundred. “It’s been a tough phase for me. I started off the season batting reasonably well. I was luckless. I am not playing only for my 100th hundred. It doesn’t matter how many hundreds you score, you still put your head down, grind it out and do the job for the team.”I was not thinking about the milestone, the media started all this; wherever I went, the restaurant, room service, everyone was talking about the 100th hundred. Nobody talked about my 99 hundreds. It became mentally tough for me because nobody talked about my 99 hundreds.”Despite the struggle to get to his 100th hundred and the pressure that that had built up around it, Tendulkar was able to joke about having finally achieved it, saying he had shed “50 kilos” with the 114 he made on Friday.Tendulkar took 36 balls to go from 80 to 100 in Mirpur, but insisted he was not playing for the record. “The hundred was not the only thing on my mind. I was thinking about getting a good total for the team. When I looked at the scoreboard, I was looking at the run-rate and what we needed to do; I was avoiding looking at my personal score.”The wait for the milestone, Tendulkar said, had made him realise the value of an international century, while the varying opinions on whether or not he should continue his pursuit had not affected him. “After scoring 99 tons you are made to realise the value of a hundred. It’s not easy, it was a testing period, but there were many people who helped me.”There are opinions, some for some against. I don’t read them, I have a job to do. Ups and downs are a part of life, there is no person who has not experienced it, and they teach you a lot in life.”I am glad about the journey. It has tested my patience, my character. So many people have had questions, I don’t read any of them. Somebody who has not gone through this will have only questions, not answers.”When asked about what lay ahead, Tendulkar was firm that he was not yet considering retirement, in fact mentioning that he was glad the milestone was “out of the way, so I can focus on the matches now”.”When I consider retirement, don’t worry, I will not hide it from anyone. I will play as long as I am enjoying it and as long as I can contribute to the team. I don’t play for milestones; that is a perception created by a few members of the media. I play cricket because I enjoy it.”In the mid-innings break, when Ramiz asked Tendulkar what message he wanted to send to youngsters who witnessed him make history, Tendulkar said it was important to never give up on chasing your dreams. “Enjoy the game and chase your dreams,” he said. “Dreams do come true. I had to wait for 22 years for India to win the World Cup.”Edited by Tariq Engineer and Dustin Silgardo

Madhya Pradesh banking on seamers

While Mumbai’s depleted attack might not seem threatening, they have the pedigree of Dhawal Kulkarni and Ramesh Powar to test MP, who are banking on TP Sudhindra and Ishwar Pandey to make inroads

There was a time when your Ranji Trophy season used to be as good as overthe moment you drew Mumbai in the knockouts. There was a time when teamswere in awe of the 39-time champions. That awe has now been replaced byrespect for their past deeds but teams today know that Mumbai arefallible, as Rajasthan showed last season. That the depleted Mumbai sidefacing Madhya Pradesh is almost unrecognisable from the formidable sidesof the past is not lost on the hosts. Devendra Bundela, the MP captain, evensaid that they were “not taking Mumbai lightly.”Such confidence might seem misplaced in a side in its first season in theElite League in seven years but TP Sudhindra, MP’s leading wicket-takerthis season, had a more practical take on the issue. “Several of us haveplayed with a lot of the Mumbai players in tournaments like the TimesShield. It is not like they are unknown to us.”Familiarity with the Mumbai players has certainly helped but not as muchas the self-belief that comes when you defeat established sides like Delhiand Gujarat. Both those wins came at the pace-friendly Emerald High SchoolGround on the outskirts of Indore. The pitch at the Holkar Stadium, thevenue for the quarter-final, is known to be much better for batting. Witha pace-dominated attack, there is no doubt over where the MP team wouldhave preferred to play. But this is a knockout game and the Holkar Stadiumhad to be chosen as it has much better facilities. The change in venue might just suit MP’s batsmen though. The outstandingperformance of their new-ball pair of Sudhindra and Ishwar Pandey – with57 wickets between them – and the form of Naman Ojha have allowed them tocarry an underperforming batting unit. Only Bundela, apart from Ojha, hasmanaged more than 300 runs this season. More than half of Mohnish Mishra’s263 runs came in his crucial hundred against Bengal.Mukesh Sahni, the coach, admitted that his batsmen have not clickedtogether. “It’s not that they have not made runs,” Sahni said. “But whenone of them has scored, the others haven’t and so on. All of them havebeen hitting the ball well in the nets. But scoring runs in the middle isdifferent. I have been telling them, ‘this is the moment. All of you haveto come good in this game.'”While Mumbai’s depleted attack might not seem threatening, they have thepedigree of Dhawal Kulkarni and Ramesh Powar to test MP, who are bankingon Sudhindra and Pandey to make inroads. “Medium-pace bowling is ourstrength,” Bundela said. “Our bowlers have taken wickets both at home andaway.”Sudhindra said that while making the semi-finals by getting past a sidelike Mumbai would be very satisfying, it would pale in comparison if MPactually manage to win the Ranji Trophy for the first time.
