Newcastle have entered the race to sign a Barcelona player who would be a better signing than Sancho.

Newcastle United’s qualification for the Champions League next season will give Eddie Howe hope that he can lure some high-profile players to Stamford Bridge.

One player they are showing interest in is Jadon Sancho. The Manchester United winger looks set to depart Old Trafford this summer.

The Englishman could cost the club around £25m, and he would certainly bolster their wide options, given his return of five goals and eight assists for Chelsea this season.

It would be a massive statement of intent if Howe could secure a deal for the former Borussia Dortmund starlet. While adding wingers will help the club next season, perhaps it is other positions that require strengthening first.

Newcastle enter the race to sign Barcelona star

One position that Howe must improve is his goalkeeping department. The club conceded 47 Premier League goals last term, the worst defensive record out of any side in the top five.

Thus, bringing in a top-class goalkeeper ahead of another Champions League campaign makes perfect sense.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen

According to reports in Spain, Barcelona’s keeper Marc-André ter Stegen could be set to leave the club following the arrival of Joan Garcia.

PSG, AC Milan, Manchester City, and Juventus have all expressed interest in the German international, but Newcastle are also entering the race.

Beating these clubs to the signature of Ter Stegen would be a major coup for Howe; that much is certain. Indeed, he would be an even better signing than Sancho.

Why Newcastle must sign Marc-André ter Stegen

Signing Sancho could prove to be a massive gamble. For Man United, the winger scored just 12 goals across 83 matches for the club. His loan spell at Chelsea didn’t exactly see him sparkle either.

His 41 matches for the Blues saw only five goals netted, and it was no surprise that they declined to sign him permanently. Given the fact that Newcastle can call upon players such as Harvey Barnes, Anthony Gordon, and Jacob Murphy on the wing, do they need to splash out to sign Sancho? Especially with the risks involved with his lacklustre form.

Jadon Sancho for Chelsea

In this instance, making a move for Ter Stegen would be seen as the smarter approach. That’s for sure.

Last season, Nick Pope kept just eight clean sheets from 35 appearances, while Martin Dubravka kept five clean sheets across ten domestic matches for the Magpies.

If Howe is serious about progressing far in the Champions League next season, making a move to bring Ter Stegen to England would be a very shrewd move indeed.

He played just nine games last season for Barcelona, keeping a solitary clean sheet. The German has been with the La Liga giants since the summer of 2014, playing over 400 competitive matches in the process.

A total of 175 clean sheets have been kept throughout that period. While he may not have featured much this term, in La Liga during 2023/24, he was excellent.

Across his 28 matches, Ter Stegen made 2.7 saves per game – a success rate of 74% – while he was also successful with 100% of his runs out per game.

He was comfortable on the ball, as evidenced by his average of 40 touches per game, while a 94% pass accuracy in his own half suggests the German moves the ball on effectively.

The player was lauded as “ice cool” by popular X page Goalkeeper.com for the way he snuffed out an opponent’s attack in the Champions League in September 2023.

Given the fact that he has a contract until 2028 with the Catalan giants, a move would cost the club, although it hasn’t been determined just how much Hansi Flick will demand for his player.

Sancho would be a fine signing, no doubt, but bringing Ter Stegen to the north-east would certainly turn heads.

West Ham reach agreement with £20m star as talks open for "major signing"

West Ham United have reportedly agreed personal terms to sign a £20m midfielder and are in talks with his club over a deal.

West Ham start summer business with move for Celtic striker Cummings

The Hammers endured a difficult 2024/25 Premier League season after splashing the cash last summer, with Julen Lopetegui being sacked at the beginning of the New Year and former technical director Tim Steiden departing shortly after.

Graham Potter arrived and saw out the new season with the Irons, and he’ll soon be preparing for his first full season at the London Stadium, looking to put his own stamp on things in the transfer market.

West Ham have already sealed their first summer signing, with Celtic forward Daniel Cummings set to move to London.

Daniel Cummings for Celtic

Talented 19-year-old striker Cummings is out of contract at Celtic Park in the summer and has already agreed terms and undergone a medical with the Hammers, with Fabrizio Romano saying it is a “done deal”.

Cummings has been free-scoring for the Hoops in their youth sides and was even given a Champions League appearance by Brendan Rodgers in the 24/25 campaign, so seems to be a star in the making and will officially arrive on July 1st.

After the Scotland youth international, West Ham now look to be targeting more experienced additions to the squad, with a new midfielder being worked on.

West Ham agree personal terms with £20m Raphael Onyedika

According to journalist Sebastian Vidal, relayed by GiveMeSport, West Ham have agreed personal terms with Club Brugge midfielder Raphael Onyedika.

Described as a potential “major signing” for the Irons by Vidal, talks are also underway with Club Brugge over agreeing a fee for Onyedika, thought to be worth around £20m.

A Nigeria international, Onyedika is attracted by the idea of playing in England but is still under contract with Club Brugge until 2027 after signing for the Belgian giants from FC Midtjylland in 2022.

Primarily a defensive midfielder, the 24-year-old can also play as a box-to-box central midfielder or even give cover as a centre-back, so would provide Potter with plenty of versatility, should a deal go through.

Onyedika even has Champions League experience with his current employers, scoring in the competition against Man City in 24/25, and by the looks of things, a move to West Ham is one to keep an eye on over the coming weeks.

Top 1% for aerials won: Leeds want to sign £18m "machine" compared to Roca

Leeds United are looking to sign a new dominant in the air player who is being compared to former Whites midfielder Marc Roca.

Leeds transfer rumours following promotion to the Premier League

The 49ers Enterprises haven’t been wasting any time since Leeds secured their promotion back to the Premier League from the Championship on Easter Monday following a 6-0 win over Stoke City and Burnley’s 2-1 win over Sheffield United.

In fact, Daniel Farke’s future as Leeds manager has been thrown into doubt, with the club concerned about his previous record in the top flight with Norwich City.

Talking after sealing promotion, chairman Paraag Marathe said that the club have been “quietly preparing the club” for the Premier League.

“The Premier League is where Leeds belongs, and our goal is to establish a long-term presence there. With that in mind, we have been quietly preparing the club for this moment. The road ahead won’t be easy but we are ready to step confidently into this next chapter. Above all, this is your club and your promotion. I want to thank each and every one of you, along with the players and every member of staff at Elland Road and Thorp Arch, for your tireless commitment in pursuit of this unforgettable moment.”

A number of new signings look likely to be made to give Leeds the best chance of Premier League survival, including former midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

Leeds and Farke race to sign "amazing" new 21 y/o defender for bargain fee

The Whites have set their sights on a new target, who could be available for a cut-price fee this summer.

ByDominic Lund Apr 23, 2025

Currently on loan at Ipswich Town from Manchester City, Phillips is thought to be ready to return to Elland Road this summer. Elsewhere, loanee Manor Solomon is expected to make his move to Leeds permanent from Tottenham Hotspur, with Spurs valuing the winger at £15m-£20m.

Now, an update has emerged on another target with Premier League experience, something the 49ers are after when it comes to summer signings.

Leeds want to sign £18m Premier League "machine"

According to reports in the Czech Republic, relayed by TBR Football, Leeds could now sign Tomas Soucek from West Ham United ahead of the 2025/26 season.

West Ham midfielder Tomas Soucek

The Whites have been named as a potential destination for the 30-year-old, who was signed by the Hammers for £18m from Slavia Prague back in 2020.

Since then, the central midfielder has made 240 appearances for West Ham, with almost 200 of those coming in the top flight. Everton are also thought to be keen on Soucek, who was dubbed a “machine” amid links to the Toffees.

Talking earlier this year, Soucek hinted at a potential move away if he wasn’t getting regular game time: “I know a few guys who are happy with the money coming into their account every month, they enjoy the life of a footballer and don’t care about the bench. I can’t do that. I need to play. I suffer on the bench.”

Graham Potter has placed Soucek on the bench in West Ham’s last four games, and as can be seen, Football Transfers have likened the midfielder to Roca, who left Leeds for Real Betis.

As per FBref, Soucek has also been ranked in the top 1% over the past 12 months for aerial duels won (3.49 per 90), so he’d certainly bring a physical presence to Yorkshire, should a move go through.

Same agent as Tanaka: Leeds ready offer for 29 y/o Japan star in his prime

Leeds United are looking to sign a new Japan international this summer who has the same agent as Whites star Ao Tanaka.

Tanaka starring in first season at Leeds

Arguably Leeds’ signing of the season alongside right-back Jayden Bogle, Tanaka has impressed after finally moving to Elland Road last summer. The midfielder cost the Whites just under £3m from Fortuna Dusseldorf and has featured heavily in his debut campaign under Daniel Farke.

Tanaka has made 41 appearances in all competitions for Leeds, with one of his highlights being a late goal scored against Championship promotion rivals Sheffield United.

The 26-year-old has come in for plenty of praise during the last 12 months, with BBC fan writer Adonis Storr calling Tanaka ‘one of the best bargains in Leeds history’.

“His introduction against Cardiff City at the end of September was only his third substitute appearances for Leeds, and he had never come on earlier than the 86th minute. Since then, no other footballer in the top four divisions of English football has completed over 1,000 passes and more than 50 tackles. The love from Ao was just as instant.

“In addition to passes and tackles, Tanaka is now adding goals to his performances – something that was missing last season when the Whites scored zero goals from central midfield. The £2.9m for Tanaka is one of the best bargains in Leeds history and shows that there is value available in the market should they look to strengthen in January.”

Now, it looks as if Leeds and the 49ers Enterprises are trying to repeat their Tanaka success by signing another Japanese ace.

Leeds plan offer to sign Japan international Hidemasa Morita

According to reports in Portugal, relayed by Sport Witness, Leeds are very interested in signing Sporting CP midfielder Hidemasa Morita.

It is claimed that Leeds are readying a concrete offer to sign Morita if they win promotion to the Premier League, with the player himself looking to leave his current employers this summer.

The 29-year-old is out of contract at Sporting CP in 2026, so the Whites could take advantage over the coming months. Valued at a career-high €15m by Transfermarkt, Morita is at the top of his game and can play as a holding or central midfielder. He also shares the same CAA Base agency as Tanaka, potentially making a deal easier to complete.

Bangladesh's leap of faith finally paying dividends

After much talk about their own brand of T20 aggression, Bangladesh prove their mettle

Mohammad Isam12-Mar-2023On a balmy Sunday evening at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, Bangladesh took a leap of faith to cross its first T20 hurdle. What started in the T20 World Cup last year, under a cloud of questions, is finally paying dividends. It is the leap of a new group of players who are embedded into a dressing-room in transition. It was the faith of being adventurous, a bit ruthless. Faith in releasing a lot of experienced players. Faith in “new Bangladesh”, a team that has finally bought into the idea that T20Is are just as important as ODIs.Mehidy Hasan Miraz, after his double miracle against India in December, got back into his match-winning ways at the right time against England. He took a valuable four-wicket haul, playing a key role in two batting collapses in their innings. England are aware of this Mehidy. On their last Bangladesh tour in 2016, he had taken 19 wickets in the Test series – seven on debut and a further 12 in his country’s first Test win over the visitors. But now he is a proper allrounder with match-winning abilities. He came out swinging at No 5, with the home side getting stuck in the chase.Najmul Hossain Shanto’s 27-ball half-century had stung England in the first T20I in Chattogram, but he played an anchor role in the second game. After all, this match was in Dhaka, where this otherwise-defunct style of top-three T20 batting has to be revived to play such knocks. Shanto watched wickets fall regularly at the other end, so he played to his strength, but didn’t overtly attack the England bowlers. Shanto’s 46 off 47 balls ended up being the slowest 40-plus score in a Bangladesh win, but it had substance. Despite a regular fall of wickets, his presence allowed Mehidy to attack with a 16-ball 20 before Taskin Ahmed and Shanto ran well between the wickets to bring them the victory.Taskin is another of these elevated cricketers in the Bangladesh team, and one who took a long time to become a match-winner. But he now looks out into the galaxy of fast bowlers, containing stars such as Shaheen Shah Afridi and Josh Hazlewood, and can consider himself to be one of them. He fields very well too, and finds the middle of the bat in crunch moments, such as the penultimate (and decisive) over of this game.Litton Das hasn’t scored regularly in this series but he is now an established member of the side, who broke plenty of batting records in 2022. Afif Hossain has quietly become the most regular T20I player in the Bangladesh team, beating Mahmudullah’s 54-game streak. Hasan Mahmud is growing into a white-ball role that many believed he has had the potential since 2020. Towhid Hridoy, Rony Talukdar and Shamim Hossain have been picked in this series purely based on their BPL performances. The catalyst for this shift in mindset within the group came during the T20 World Cup last year. The BCB shook things up by bringing in Sridharan Sriram, effectively as the head coach, while the likes of Litton, Shanto, Mosaddek Hossain and Yasir Ali were given the assurance that they can play with freedom. Bangladesh didn’t set the world on fire in falling short of the knock-outs, but there was visible progress in their mentality.”I thought we did well in the T20 World Cup,” said Mehidy. “We had big opportunities, like if we beat Pakistan, we would have played the semi-final. We were unfortunate to miss out. Everyone currently is playing positively, everyone is clued to the gameplan. There’s not much to think in T20s. You just have to react to every ball that comes your way. There’s risk and courage involved. Look at Towhid Hridoy. He doesn’t look like someone who is playing his first international series.Related

“Look at Shanto. There has been so much said about him. Some really bad stuff. Now he is playing so well. He has turned around, and shown excellent mentality. He is being consistent too. He did well in the T20 World Cup. He was the highest run-getter in the BPL. He is doing well in this series. These small changes have been huge for the team.”Victories such as these, against big teams like England ,will strengthen the team’s -self-confidence, Mehidy added.”We have young players with us, so doing well against big teams will give us the mental edge,” he said. “We can get stronger. We now know how to fight against big teams. There’s nothing to lose against big teams, but a lot to gain. We won this series. We had nothing to lose. But the way we won this series, will certainly motivate us.”Despite needing just 118 to win, Mehidy said that Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan had urged them to stay focused while mapping out their strategy during the mid-innings break. “We tried to be as calm as possible with the bat. We didn’t get too happy bowling them out. The captain said, don’t be happy just yet. We will celebrate after we win. We should be serious in every moment, and support those batting in the middle,” he said.Bangladesh frayed in that calmness on several occasions, but Shanto, Mehidy and Taskin have now faced these tough moments enough times to know exactly how to react. Shanto kept the chase going at one end, Mehidy ruffled the feathers at the other, before Taskin kept his nerve in the last two overs. New Bangladesh is a lot more about trust, confidence and positivity. But there’s going to be more. The next challenge awaits on Tuesday.

Dimuth Karunaratne rues spate of Sri Lanka injuries in series that got away

Captain admits loss of several first-choice players contributed to team’s negative mindset

Andrew Fidel Fernando05-Jan-2021Sri Lanka lost 2-0, going down by an innings in the first match, and ten wickets in the second, but captain Dimuth Karunaratne is not about to beat himself or his team up.Partly this is because Sri Lanka have felt the injuries that felled around a third of their touring squad – mostly first-choice players – were somewhat out of their control. They were unable to prepare for this tour as they normally might, thanks partly to the Lanka Premier League, which had to be pushed into December due to Covid-19, and they also could not have a practice match before the Tests. None of Sri Lanka’s players had played long-form cricket since July.”A lot of players got injured, and I think that was the biggest thing we missed,” Karunaratne said after his team lost at The Wanderers. “When we were playing without those injuries in the first Test, we were in the match and could potentially have won it. We got a good start, which is a difficult thing to achieve, and then we lost our bowlers. When you lose six or seven players, you do go into a negative mindset and that’s difficult. On these tracks it’s a huge challenge.”Perhaps because Sri Lanka have another Test series looming in less than two weeks (at home, against England), Karunaratne also chose to dwell on the happier take-aways.”As a captain I’m really worried about the result. But at least we have some young talents we can use in the future. And there are a few positives from the series. Kusal Perera is in form. Vishwa Fernando, Asitha Fernando and Wanindu Hasaranga also did well.Related

“We did quite a few positive things, like score the most runs a Sri Lanka team has ever scored in South Africa [their first-innings total of 396 at Centurion], and also score more runs than any previous Sri Lanka teams at The Wanderers [their second-innings total of 211]. In patches we played well, but we weren’t able to sustain that, partly because of the injuries.”On a personal note, Karunaratne had hit Sri Lanka’s only hundred of the tour in the second innings at The Wanderers, and his 103 off 128 balls was also Sri Lanka’s first triple-figure score at this notoriously difficult venue for South Asian batsmen. Before the match, he had averaged a little over 20 in the country, across 12 innings, so the hundred meant more than most.”Of course there’s a sadness at the hundred not having taken us to a win. But playing for the first time after nine months, and batting with an injured finger, scoring some runs was a huge confidence boost for me.”I had missed out on getting starts on this tour. Previously when I was in South Africa that’s the one thing I had got – 20s or 30s – but I hadn’t been able to convert. I was also really nervous as I hadn’t played in a long time. It’s tough on these pitches for anybody. I looked at what my shortcomings were, and tried to fix them.”In the first 15 overs, I didn’t have any big plans. I just wanted to leave the ball well and play positively. Once I got set I realised the way to play on these tracks is to be positive. On a pitch like this a good ball can come at any time. I targeted certain bowlers, and respected the ones I found difficult. I was really determined to score a hundred in this innings.”

David Ortiz Played Weatherman As Speedway Classic Started in Disappointing Rain Delay

A lot of planning went into Major League Baseball's Speedway Classic between the Cincinnati Reds and Atlanta Braves at Bristol Motor Speedway.

An entire field was constructed in the middle of the race track, custom uniforms were handed out and there was even a pregame concert with Pitbull and Tim McGraw. Unfortunately, the one thing you can't plan for wouldn't comply for the first MLB game in the state of Tennessee.

Weather hit in Bristol, Tenn. which forced the contest between the Braves and Reds to start in a rain delay. A disappointing start to an event that was months in the making. But what can you do? Boston Red Sox legend and current MLB on Fox broadcaster David Ortiz provided plenty of optimism and kept the energy light during the delay by showing his skills as a weatherman.

"I'm a meteorologist," Ortiz joked on the broadcast as he analyzed the radar. "It's a little bit of green over Bristol, let's see the weather right here. See that little bit of green open? It will be gone in a little bit people. Don't rush it out, sit down and have a drink because that's going to go away in a little bit. It's a lot of green but I can see a little window right there."

You can watch the hilarious clip below:

First pitch at Bristol Motor Speedway was scheduled for 7:15 p.m. ET. Starting lineups were announced and the national anthem was sung but the tarp had to be rolled out due to rain in Bristol that delayed the action.

At least Big Papi brought the fans at home some rain-delay entertainment.

Once valued at £100m: Leicester now hold strong interest in “special” striker

Leicester City now hold a strong interest in signing a “special” striker in the January transfer window, as they look to recover from a difficult start to the season.

Foxes still within touching distance of play-offs despite slow start

After being relegated from the Premier League last season, Leicester would’ve been hoping for an instant return to the top flight, but as we approach the half-way stage of the Championship season, they are still languishing in mid-table.

However, there is very little separating a number of clubs in the Championship, with the Foxes still just three points off the play-off places, meaning promotion is still very much a realistic goal, and Marti Cifuentes’ side are unbeaten in December thus far.

That said, some new additions in the January transfer window could boost Cifuentes’ side’s chances of promotion, and the manager is currently lacking top-quality options at centre-forward.

Midfielder Jordan James is Leicester’s top scorer in the Championship this season, having netted five goals, with Jordan Ayew finding the back of the net just three times in his opening 18 games.

As such, signing a new striker is on the agenda, and the Foxes are now showing strong interest in signing Brighton & Hove Albion striker Evan Ferguson, who is currently on loan at Serie A side AS Roma.

However, with the once £100m-rated forward’s spell at the Italian club not going to plan, Brighton are set to make a decision on his future this winter, and a number of clubs are lining up for his signature.

Everton and Celtic are named as potential suitors, with the Irishman’s camp now assessing their options, and a move to the King Power Stadium could be on the cards, with Leicester prepared to take him.

"Special" Ferguson needs to get career back on track

In many ways it is surprising the 21-year-old’s career has panned out the way it has, scoring just one goal in ten Serie A games on loan at Roma, given that he exhibited some very promising signs at Brighton.

Indeed, the 26-time Ireland international scored a combined 12 Premier League goals across the 2022-23 and 2023-24 campaigns, which is an impressive feat, considering how young he was at the time.

During his time working under Roberto De Zerbi, the youngster also received high praise from Jamie Carragher, who said: “I think that lad he has got up front, I think he’s pretty special. He is only going to get better with him as his manager.”

Dropping to a lower level, such as the Championship, could serve Ferguson well when it comes to regaining his confidence, and his previous exploits in the Premier League indicate he could help fire Leicester to promotion.

Elly De La Cruz Left Terry Francona in Awe With Score From Second on Double-Steal

There isn't much that Terry Francona, a former 10-year MLB veteran who is now managing his fourth franchise, hasn't seen in baseball. And yet, he still can't believe some of the things he's seen this spring from Cincinnati Reds star Elly De La Cruz.

De La Cruz is a defitional five-tool player, and may be the most dangerous baserunner in the game today. During Tuesday's spring training game against the Colorado Rockies, he managed to score from second base on a double-steal, something that Francona, who has over 4,300 MLB games under his belt as a player and manager, doesn't think he's seen.

"They say that you may see something when you come to a game that you've never seen before," Francona said, per(Cincinnati). "I've never seen that. I mean, that was—when he left third, I'm like, 'no, no, no, no. Good play.' I mean, that's as athletic and instinctual as you're ever gonna see. My goodness sake's. That was incredible."

After winning two World Series with the Boston Red Sox and a successful 11-year tenure with the Cleveland Guardians, Francona may be coaching the most exciting player of his managerial career in his first year with the Reds.
