Leeds have held pre-summer transfer meeting

A big Leeds United transfer update has emerged regarding the club’s plans for the upcoming summer window…

What’s the talk?

Leeds Live reporter Beren Cross has revealed that Jesse Marsch has held a meeting with Victor Orta to discuss their approach ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-marsch-raphinha-dest-philhay” title=”Read the latest Leeds news!”]

The American was brought to Yorkshire in February after Marcelo Bielsa was relieved of his duties and has not had the chance to bring his own players into Elland Road as of yet, as he joined after the January window.

Cross tweeted: “Marsch and Orta met last week to discuss recruitment. Head coach keen to tell the scouts about his tactical vision, the player profiles he likes and how the current crop are adapting to his system.”

Supporters will be excited

This claim will surely leave Leedss supporters excited for multiple reasons ahead of the summer transfer window.

Firstly, it shows that Marsch is eager to get work done as quickly as possible, despite the current season still being in progress. Leeds have six matches left to play in the 2021/22 Premier League and are nine points clear of the relegation zone as it stands, which means that there is still plenty on the line over the coming weeks.

They are not completely out of trouble yet and you could excuse the American for not wanting to look too far into the future, but he is seemingly keen to be prepared for the summer. Supporters will therefore be buzzing with this proactive approach from the head coach, as it will give Orta more time to work on the deals that he wants to complete.

Fans will also be excited by this claim, as it confirms that Marsch is being given full creative control in the transfer department. He is being allowed to shape the way in which Leeds scout players in order to build the squad in his image, and this an exciting prospect for supporters heading into next season as they now know that signings will be coming in with a bigger image in mind.

They can look forward to seeing how Marsch wants his team to play once he has the players that he needs. It is now down to the scouts to find the right hidden gems, and to Orta to ensure that he can strike the deals to bring them to Elland Road.

Everton transfer news on Saint-Maximin

Journalist Paul Brown has now dropped some fresh Everton transfer news involving Newcastle United winger Allan Saint-Maximin, claiming a deal for the winger is ‘out of reach’.

The Lowdown: £50m claim

As per The Daily Mail, the Magpies are now willing to listen to offers of around £50m for Saint-Maximin in the summer, as Eddie Howe looks to freshen up his squad ahead of the new season.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-4/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Goodison Park faithful are reportedly just one of a number of clubs who are interested in his signature, but that is assuming that they manage to avoid relegation from the Premier League.

The Latest: Brown update

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Brown has now claimed that a move for Saint-Maximin to the Merseyside club ‘looks out of reach at the moment’, but admitted that he would have been an ‘ideal’ signing under former manager Rafa Benitez:

“It looks out of reach at the moment. I’ve thought since last summer, when we found out that Rafael Benitez wanted to play quick, counter-attacking football with wingers, that Saint-Maximin was ideal for that kind of role.”

The Verdict: Unlikely

It just seems very unlikely that Saint-Maximin would leave the long-term project at St. James’ Park for a club currently entrenched even further in the relegation dogfight.

He is clearly a key player for the Magpies, having averaged more shots and dribbles per match in the division than any of his teammates, while no Toon player has come close to his six man-of-the-match awards.

Nonetheless, it is very difficult to see the Toffees paying anything close to £50m for the Frenchman anyway, given their financial troubles.

Andrew Strauss upset at whitewash that got away

Andrew Strauss admitted he was “annoyed” that England had let slip the chance of a 5-0 whitewash against Australia, but played down suggestions that he had erred tactically in once again choosing to bowl first after winning the toss. After allowing Australia first use of a fast and true wicket, England were set an imposing target of 291, their highest run-chase of the series so far, but were bundled out by Ryan Harris for 212 in 42.4 overs.”We didn’t get enough things right today,” said Strauss. “We got off to a pretty good start with the ball, but [Michael] Clarke and [Ricky] Ponting played really well in the middle period, where we had done best in the first three games. We struggled to find ways of ‘dotting them up’, which was a little bit frustrating. We tried seven bowlers, but on a flat wicket it was easy to hit through the line of the ball.”Bowling first has been England’s modus operandi throughout the series to date, even though such a tactic flies in the face of conventional wisdom. With a varied attack that had helped to carry England to a run of eight ODI victories in a row – their best run of form since the 1992 World Cup – and batsmen of the calibre of Eoin Morgan and Kevin Pietersen, England believe they have the personnel to keep any target within reach. But that notion received a bit of a reality check on a chastening day at The Oval.”It wasn’t as good a performance as the first three, and we’ve got what we’ve deserved,” said Strauss. “The idea of chasing down anything Australia set us has worked pretty well in the first three games – and we didn’t see any particular reason to change that today. When you lose in that fashion, you always think ‘Well, maybe we should have batted first’. But I’m pretty comfortable with that decision. I just don’t think we did enough things well today.”England have improved markedly as a one-day unit in recent months, but as Ponting made clear with his memorable “bragging rights” comment at Cardiff, they have an awfully long way to go to match the achievements and consistency of Australia’s one-day side – who, after all, haven’t lost a single World Cup match in the whole of the 21st Century. Another victory at Lord’s on Saturday would transform that 5-0 ambition into a far less imposing 3-2 result. It remains to be seen whether Strauss sticks to his guns by fielding first in that game.”You’ve got to play to your strengths, it’s as simple as that,” was Ponting’s take on the tactics. “If they think it’s in their interests to keep chasing they’ll keep doing it. They obviously like bowling first and trying to chase the runs down, although it’s not my preferred way of playing. If it’s dry when you start, it always gets that little bit tougher and it makes chasing hard.”But I wasn’t as surprised they bowled first as I was at Manchester,” Ponting added. “That was a wicket I thought looked particularly dry and hard to chase on, and as the game went on it certainly was that. But they seem to be very structured in everything they are doing at the moment, the way they are playing their cricket. We’ll see what they do at Lord’s.”For Strauss, the disappointment of the result was tempered by the small successes that came out of the game, such as Michael Yardy’s maiden ODI fifty – a tenacious but even-tempoed 57 from 63 balls that prevented England’s challenge from disintegrating until the final ten overs.”He played really well, and has played a lot of innings like that for Sussex – knocking the ball around, accumulating pretty quickly, and clearly we needed him to do that today,” said Strauss. “He stepped up to the plate – and on the back of his bowling in the first three games, it was good to see him scoring some runs. If you haven’t scored a one-day international fifty before, the first one is very important – regardless of the situation of the game.”The whitewash wasn’t a secret hope. We were very hopeful we could do it,” he said. “What we were trying to focus on was getting it to 4-0, trying not to look too far ahead. But Australia did what you expect them to do; they came back hard at us today and put in the better performances. They had three excellent performances in the game, and that’s why they won.”

Newcastle could target Gini Wijnaldum

Newcastle United could look to bring Georginio Wijnaldum back to St James’ Park in the latter part of the January transfer window, according to The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards.

The lowdown

The Magpies brought the Dutch midfielder to England from PSV Eindhoven in a £14.5m deal back in 2015. He made 40 appearances for the club, scoring 11 goals, before moving on to Liverpool following the Tynesiders’ relegation to the Championship.

After five years at Anfield, he joined Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer last summer, but he has found it difficult to nail down a place in the team under Mauricio Pochettino. He has started just nine out of a possible 19 Ligue 1 matches and was selected for three of the six Champions League group games.

The latest

Edwards reported in The Telegraph that a move for Wijnaldum isn’t a primary objective for Newcastle, but it could be a deal that they explore ‘later in the window’ if they miss out on their top midfield targets.

In a tweet, he added that this information was ‘based on conversations on the phone with people who know what’s going on’.

The verdict

Intriguingly, Wijnaldum admitted earlier in the season that he wasn’t ‘completely happy’ with his situation in Paris, and Sky Sports reported at the start of last month that he was open to leaving the Parc des Princes on loan. They did add that PSG ‘appear unlikely to let him leave’, but there’s time for that stance to change.

Wijnaldum earns £180,000 per week in the French capital, but Newcastle should be able to live with any wage arrangement.

In addition to Kieran Trippier, the ‘sensational’ Wijnaldum, as hailed by his former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, would inject Champions League quality into the Newcastle ranks, having played in the tournament for the last five seasons and won it in 2019.

Fans to gain free entry for Duleep Trophy final

Fans will be granted free entry for the ongoing Duleep Trophy final between South Zone and West Zone, after the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) decided not to allow spectators inside the Rajiv International Cricket Stadium for the first two days.It was earlier reported that the HCA was fearing crowd trouble due to the political situation in Andhra Pradesh, but joint secretary DS Chalapathi clarified that fans will be given access, only from Gate No. 4, for the three remaining days.”Due to civil works, the entry was barred for public to witness the match on the first two days,” Chalapathi said in a statement. “However, we have decided to let the fans watch the proceedings from the Eastern Stand (Gate No. 4) for the next three days of the five-day final.”

Newcastle must sign Philippe Coutinho

Newcastle United have been linked with numerous talents across Europe since the completion of their Saudi-backed takeover in October. The new owners are just two weeks away from their first transfer window and plenty of eyes will be on the Magpies throughout January.

However, one name who sticks out amid an array of players is Barcelona attacking midfielder Philippe Coutinho.

What’s the story?

After leaving Liverpool for the Nou Camp almost four years ago in what was reportedly a £142m deal, the Brazilian has seen his career stagnate significantly.

Since joining the Spanish heavyweights, the 29-year-old has made 106 appearances, scoring 25 goals and registering 14 assists. By comparison, Coutinho managed 54 goals and 45 assists in 201 appearances whilst his former Anfield manager Jurgen Klopp has hailed him as a “world-class player” in the past.

Furthermore, the Brazilian was sent out on loan to Bayern Munich in the 2019/20 season in a bid to restore his confidence. He produced 20 goal involvements in 38 appearances alongside winning the Champions League, Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal. However, a permanent move to the Bavarian powerhouse never materialised.

The £18m-rated attacking midfielder, previously labelled a “magician” by compatriot Roberto Firmino, has seen his predicament in Catalonia worsen this season. So far, Coutinho has only made a starting lineup in La Liga on five occasions, playing just 501 minutes in the Spanish top flight.

Italian outlet Tuttomercatoweb claimed (via Chronicle Live) that the playmaker will depart Barcelona next month amid the Tyneside club being linked with a move for him.

However, the likelihood of a move to Newcastle being completed doesn’t bode well, with the Brazilian’s wages likely to prove a stumbling block for numerous interested suitors.

Coutinho would be an excellent signing

With the Magpies sat in 19th place in the Premier League, Eddie Howe will be looking for significant reinforcements to help Newcastle’s survival bid.

Callum Wilson has scored a third of their 18 league goals this term and an injury to the English centre-forward would prove detrimental, with Newcastle’s back-up options majorly inferior – winger Allan Saint-Maximin is his only team-mate to have scored more than once in the current league campaign.

The Tynesiders have seriously lacked creativity from midfield this season, and Coutinho would likely make a major difference.

Players such as Miguel Almiron have once again failed to make a real impact, with the Paraguayan scoring just 13 goals and registering five assists in 106 appearances for Newcastle since joining almost three years ago. Indeed, as per WhoScored, Coutinho has averaged a higher seasonal league rating than the 27-year-old in each of the last four campaigns, including 2021/22.

It seems unlikely now, but if Howe could lure the former Liverpool maestro to St James’ Park, it could prove a major boost to the Tyneside club’s Premier League survival hopes.

Newcastle: Ornstein drops transfer claim

An exciting Newcastle United transfer update has emerged, regarding the upcoming January transfer window…

What’s the talk?

Athletic journalist David Ornstein has claimed that the Magpies are not going to have a quiet month as they attempt to bolster Eddie Howe’s playing squad. It will be the club’s first opportunity to spend under their new ownership and they are seemingly set to make a splash in the water.

Speaking on The Athletic Football Podcast: Ornstein said:

“Newcastle are going to be busy. They’re in a mess and they genuinely have irons in fires.

“They are very actively looking and already trying to make moves in the market.”

Buzzing

Newcastle fans will surely be buzzing with this update from Ornstein as it brings with it the prospect of an exciting month for the supporters in January.

There is no hiding away from how poor the Magpies have been this season and it is going to take some effort to turn things around in the second half of the campaign. They have picked up a measly 10 points from 16 Premier League matches so far and now face Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Everton before the turn of the year.

Only Norwich (34) have conceded as many goals as Newcastle, having played one game more, and only Burnley (1) have failed to pick up more wins than the Toon Army (1) in the league.

This highlights the severity of the situation and explains why it is vital that PIF hit the ground running and enjoy a successful transfer window. The facts are that the current playing squad have struggled this season under Steve Bruce, Graeme Jones and Howe, suggesting that there is a quality issue.

Therefore, reinforcements are needed and the club need to get them in as quickly as possible. English teams do not benefit from the luxury of a winter break to do their business without worrying about matches and the longer they wait to make signings the more points they could potentially miss out on.

This is why Newcastle fans will be buzzing with Ornstein’s claim that they already have ‘irons in fires’ as it reveals that work is well underway and that the owners will not be wasting any time heading into January.

They appear to be laying the necessary groundwork and supporters should be excited to see what they are able to do.
