Southampton: Fans react to Angus Gunn’s departure

Southampton goalkeeper Angus Gunn has completed a move to newly-promoted Norwich City [Norwich City FC Official].

Signed for £10 million from Manchester City in 2018, the 25-year-old went on to make 30 appearances on the South Coast during his time at St Mary’s [Transfermarkt].

In recent times, Gunn fell behind in the pecking order for the Saints and spent the 2020/21 season on loan at Sky Bet Championship side Stoke City [Southampton FC Official].

Interestingly, he was initially meant to be part of the Britannia Stadium outfit’s squad until the end of 2021/22 [Stoke Sentinel].

However, the Saints have since broken a clause inserted into his deal in order for him to complete a £5.27 million move to East Anglia [Transfermarkt].

In light of this, loads of Southampton diehards flocked to Twitter to express their opinions surrounding his departure.

Southampton fans react:

Replying to the official Southampton FC Twitter page, here is what some fans had to say upon hearing the latest news:

“An odd transfer at the time, given we had 2 expensive keepers at the time and no money, but not his fault. Wish him the best of luck for the future. Hopefully it includes a sell on fee, as he’s got a load of potential”

Man City should sign Locatelli

Manchester City have been heavily linked with Sassuolo midfielder Manuel Locatelli in recent months and after a superb display for Italy at Euro 2020 against Switzerland earlier this week, Txiki Begiristain and Pep Guardiola should look to bring him to the Etihad this summer.

City have regularly been credited with an interest in the former AC Milan man, with Italian football journalist Fabrizio Romano claiming recently that the Etihad outfit have scouted him for a long time.

However, it seems as if Juventus are currently leading the race for the 23-year-old, whilst Arsenal and Chelsea are also keen on a deal, so the Citizens will have to act quickly if they want to bring him in this summer.

It certainly seems likely that the Italian will depart Sassuolo this summer, as they could only muster an eighth-place finish in Serie A last season and a player of Locatelli’s quality deserves to be playing in the Champions League.

He showed his class in the opening game of the Euro 2020 Championships as Italy beat Turkey 3-0, earning a solid 7.02 rating from WhoScored for his performance but he was exceptional in their most recent game against Switzerland, scoring twice and earning an excellent 8.69 rating in another 3-0 win.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-manchester-city-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Manchester City transfer rumours and news!”]

The young midfielder first spread the play beautifully with a left-footed volley to Sassuolo teammate Dominico Berardi before bursting into the box and tapping in his cutback, before doubling the Italians lead with an emphatic finish from outside the box.

Following the game, Dion Dublin was full of praise for Locatelli on the BBC analysis of the game, suggesting that the “intelligent” midfielder was key to Roberto Mancini’s side’s victory and their progression to the last 16.

His performances for Sassuolo last season, where he averaged an impressive 7.08 rating from WhoScored in Serie A, certainly suggest that he could be a stellar addition to Guardiola’s side this summer and if he continues to impress at Euro 2020, then there seems no reason why City shouldn’t look to bring him to the Etihad ahead of next season.

Everton handed boost in Smalling pursuit

Everton have been handed a boost in their bid to bring Chris Smalling to Goodison Park this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Corriere Dello Sport (via Sport Witness), who claimed that the AS Roma centre-back is no longer considered non-transferable by the Serie A club, with both Tiago Pinto and Jose Mourinho believed to be open to the sale of the 31-year-old in the summer transfer window.

The report added that Everton are extremely interested in making a move for the former Manchester United defender, and should Marcel Brands submit an acceptable offer, Roma would not stand in the way of Smalling’s departure from the Stadio Olimpico this summer.

Brands will be buzzing

While Smalling did not have the best of seasons for the Giallorossi last time out, something which was largely down to the centre-back picking up a number of varying injuries, the 31-year-old’s form in the season prior demonstrated that, as long as he keeps himself injury-free, he would be a fantastic signing for the Toffees to get over the line this summer.

Indeed, over his 30 Serie A appearances for Paulo Fonseca’s side in 2019/20, the £10.8m-rated man helped his side to keep six clean sheets, as well as averaging 1.9 interceptions, 0.8 tackles and four clearances and winning 4.5 duels per game.

The England international also impressed for Roma in an attacking capacity that term, scoring three goals, providing two assists and averaging 0.3 key passes per league fixture. These returns saw the £102,000-per-week centre-back earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.12, ranking him as Roma’s sixth-best performer in the Italian top-flight that year.

As such, with Marcel Brands undoubtedly hoping to build a squad in the summer transfer market which would be capable of much more than Everton’s 10th-placed finish in the Premier League last time around, the news that the player Fonseca dubbed an “extraordinary” defender is available on the transfer market is sure to have left the Toffees director of football buzzing.

Newcastle transfer claim on Tyler Roberts

Frank McAvennie has dropped an encouraging transfer claim on Tyler Roberts and whether he would fit in at Newcastle United.

The Lowdown: Newcastle eyeing Roberts

As per Football Insider, the Magpies are closely monitoring the 22-year-old ahead of a potential move from Leeds United once the summer transfer window opens.

He is out of contract at Elland Road in 2022 and is yet to agree an extension, so the Whites may view a deal this summer as a good opportunity to cash in on him in order to gain some value from a transfer fee rather than risk losing him for nothing next year.

The Latest: McAvennie claims Roberts would start at Newcastle

Speaking to Football Insider, McAvennie – who is now a pundit after playing for the likes of West Ham United and Celtic – has claimed that Roberts would be a starter under Steve Bruce at St James’ Park, believing that the Toon Army would instantly warm up to him. The 61-year-old said:

“If he’s not getting a game, I think so.

“If you’re not playing you have to ask to leave. If he goes to Newcastle he’ll be a starter straight away.

“They have great fans and they will love him up there if he hits the ground running.

“Roberts can ask for guarantees but the manager can’t give them. He can only give them if he’s playing well.

“You can’t tell a player he will always start because what if he starts playing badly? It’s a stupid statement.

“At his age, he’s got to be playing.”

The Verdict: Roberts would add to Newcastle squad

Roberts is certainly a player who could add something to the Magpies squad, and with the added experience of playing at Premier League level under Marcelo Bielsa, he would not have to adapt to the demands of the division were he to join Newcastle.

McAvennie’s point about his game-time is also pertinent – while the forward has played in 26 league games this season, only 14 of those have been as a starter.

Also, at just 22 years of age, Roberts should get even better over the next few years, while his added versatility is also a quality which could be very useful to have on Tyneside next season, especially with the amount of injuries the Magpies have incurred to key players such as Allan Saint-Maximin and Callum Wilson.

The Welshman would certainly seem to be a smart buy should Newcastle look to sign him in the summer.

Blewett applies the heat before Victorians rein in Redback total

Normally a Greg Blewett (117) century would put South Australia on top after a day’s play at the Adelaide Oval. But, in extreme heat, Victoria’s bowlers wouldprobably be well pleased with their effort in restricting the Redbacks to a scoreline of 4/261 on a typically good batting wicket following the opening six hours of thePura Cup match between the teams here at the Adelaide Oval. The Vics restricted South Australia’s batsmen to 82, 83 and 96 runs in the three respective sessions asthe heat really took its toll. Regular fluid intake was the order of the day with the sprinkler cover adjacent to the wicket square resembling a mini-bar more than a spotto store helmets. In temperatures that hovered close to the thirty-eight degree mark for much for the day, players continually migrated back to the sprinkler-style oasisin an effort to re-hydrate themselves.Blewett will sleep well tonight – provided that his infant child does similarly – after his four hour stay. The innings was laced with strong drives through the off side andthe hook shot for good measure on the odd occasion the visiting bowlers dropped short. It wasn’t a pitch for such bowling in truth but the odd bit of variation didn’tactually hurt too much as the Bushrangers toiled imaginatively and manfully in a difficult search for wickets. The South Australian vice-captain had joined the fray after a fifty-six run union for the first wicket between David Fitzgerald (50) and Shane Deitz (25). The latter infact looked rather unlucky to be dismissed as the ball seemed to pass his bat and clip his pad on the way through to wicketkeeper Peter Roach. It seemed UmpirePatterson gave the left hander out leg before but it was later confirmed that there had been a edge and that that had been the reason for Victoria’s one and onlysuccess before lunch. After the break, Fitzgerald and Blewett stayed together until the fourth hour of the day, before the former West Australian edged a John Davison (2/64) delivery toslip, where Ian Harvey took a good catch. Fitzgerald’s 134 ball stay represented the rock around which Blewett could build in a partnership of eighty-four runs fromthirty-one overs.Darren Lehmann (21) was a little more circumspect than normal, taking three quarters of an hour over his twelve runs to tea, but signalled his intentions immediatelyafter the resumption hitting Davison’s second ball for a six over long on.The offie had his revenge, though, in his next over as the SA skipper pushed a ball to a short mid wicket position where Jason Arnbeger held the first of two catches, this one as he came forward and low to his right.Blewett duly brought up his ton and then was dropped in the first over with the second new ball. With the South Australian’s score on 111, Mathew Inness grassedwhat seemed a genuine caught and bowled chance. Inness’ drop cost little more than a few overs’ frustration, however. After yet another drink break, Blewett pulled adelivery from the left armer to square leg to end a fine knock.Jeff Vaughan (15*), who came in at the fall of his captain’s wicket, laboured for seventy-three balls and 130 minutes for his runs, playing like a man who is feeling asthough every innings could be his last. He and Chris Davies (21*) saw things through to stumps but will have a tough task ahead of them again in the morning when theVictorians will return with a still fairly new ball and be striving to remove the remainder of the recognised batsmen quickly.Victoria’s bowlers generally performed extremely creditably, although it should be noted that skipper Paul Reiffel (0/40), who copped a knock to the knee late in theday in the field, was a little short. Harvey (1/35) bowled well in his pre-lunch and post-tea spells at the crease, while Inness (1/53) toiled hard and deserved his wicketlate in the day.In more high temperatures tomorrow, the game looks set to continue to be a “survival of the sauna” on a pitch that is already resembling the A1 highway.

LFC fans remember Barcelona miracle

A number of Liverpool fans have been remembering the incredible 4-0 win over Barcelona two years ago, in what is surely Anfield’s greatest night.

The Reds’ world-famous stadium has hosted some special games throughout history, from the Saint-Etienne match in 1977 to the Champions League victory over Chelsea in 2005.

The 90 minutes that took place against Barca on May 7th, 2019 surely tops the pile, however, on an evening that will never be forgotten.

[freshpress-quiz id=“355458″]

Trailing 3-0 from the Champions League semi-final first leg, Jurgen Klopp’s men produced a stunning comeback, doing it without injured pair Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino.

The eventual 4-0 victory seemed scarcely believable before kickoff and it sent Liverpool through to the final, with the Reds beating Tottenham 2-0 in Madrid.

Due to it being the anniversary of the Barca game, footage has understandably been shared left, right and centre, with The Anfield Wrap posting a video on Twitter.

Tottenham could be offered Martial

According to a report by Football Insider, Premier League rivals Manchester United could now offer Tottenham Hotspur the chance to sign Anthony Martial in a part exchange deal for superstar striker Harry Kane.

The Lowdown: Kane exit saga in full swing…

Sky Sports recently broke the news that Kane has reiterated his desire to leave Tottenham Hotspur after yet another year in north London without any silverware.

Indeed, the 27-year-old has even been at the centre of enquires from the likes of United, Man City and Chelsea – with Spurs even making enquiries of their own into replacement strikers.

The reports don’t seem likely to go away any time soon, and Spurs could be set for a summer-long transfer saga surrounding the Englishman.

The Latest: United could now offer Martial to Spurs

Bringing the latest, Football Insider are claiming that Tottenham could now be offered £250,000-per-week Man United star Martial in a part exchange deal for Kane this summer.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-gossip/” title=”Spurs gossip” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

A Manchester United source, speaking to the outlet, claims the Red Devils are lining up an offer but are unlikely to meet chairman Daniel Levy’s sky high valuation of around £150 million.

To lower the price, Tottenham could now be offered both Martial and current West Ham loanee Jesse Lingard.

Kane is said to be ‘certain’ of his desire to quit Spurs and United want an A-list centre forward despite their agreement to tie down Edinson Cavani to a one-year deal.

The Verdict: Good deal?

At 25-years-old, Martial is arguably a proven force in the Premier League already – having scored 17 goals whilst notching another six assists in 31 top flight starts last campaign (WhoScored).

While he hasn’t been able to improve on those numbers over 2020/2021, the winger still has plenty of years ahead of him and has averaged the third-most completed dribbles out of any first team regular in the United squad this season.

Once dubbed ‘unplayable’ by former Spurs midfielder Micheal Carrick (The Mirror), who played with Martial at Old Trafford, there are certainly plus points to this being the move if Kane is absolutely going to leave.

Of course, there is the argument that there is no way he can fill the void left by Kane – and this possible agreement may come down to the fee United offer alongside both Martial and Lingard.

Derby fans happy with takeover update

A number of Derby County supporters have been left happy with the news that a planned takeover of the club has now officially been called off.

The Rams ensured they remained in the Championship for another season last weekend, following a breathless final day – providing they survive a possible points deduction.

Wayne Rooney’s side may only have managed to draw 3-3 at home to Sheffield Wednesday, but Rotherham’s failure to win away to Cardiff City meant Derby stayed up.

It was a huge relief for everyone associated with the club, with hope that they can now push onto bigger and better things with Rooney at the helm.

Talk surrounding a takeover taking place at Pride Park has not been met with resounding positivity however, but that news has now taken a twist.

According to BBC Sport, Spanish businessman Erik Alonso’s proposed takeover of Derby has fallen through, with his company, No Limit Sports Limited, failing to complete a deal.
