Gini Wijnaldum comments on Thiago could mean his Anfield fate is sealed

Gini Wijnaldum, who cost £25m in 2016, has been singing the praises of recent Liverpool transfer Thiago Alcantara, claiming that he is the “perfect match” for the club.

In a recent interview posted via the official LFC Instagram, the Dutch midfielder has tipped his new teammate to play a huge part in Liverpool’s success moving forwards. Indeed, Thiago was one man that fans were desperate to see join the club after months of ongoing speculation.

“He’s such a quality player that is going to make this team even better than we were before,” Wijnaldum said. “So, I’m really happy, everyone is really happy, to have him here. He’s also happy to be here.”

What Thiago’s arrival could mean for Wijnaldum

Jurgen Klopp’s midfield has been in need of a makeover for some time. Since the eagle-eyed Philippe Coutinho left for Barcelona, Liverpool have been without a stand-out creative midfielder to assist the front three. The Brazilian’s ability to score from way outside the area is a trait the Premier League title holders could hugely benefit from this season as they look to hold onto their crown.

Thiago’s presence has already lifted spirits despite the fact he is currently sidelined due to illness. But upon his return, he may begin the process of edging teammate Wijnaldum out of the starting line-up.

As it stands, the Netherlands international is yet to pen a new deal with the club, despite talks of a move to Barcelona being debunked by the player himself. He now has less than 12 months left on his current contract and could be leaving the club next season as a free agent. For now at least, it certainly seems to look this way and Wijnaldum’s comments may only confirm it.

Should the two part ways, it will be done with the greatest respect for each other and his recent praise for Thiago, who Klopp has already labelled as “world class”, only indicates that whilst he may personally seek a new chapter, he wants nothing but the best for Liverpool.

Ollie Watkins: Leeds could land an exciting upgrade in attack

Leeds United are said to want four or five new signings to bolster their maiden bow in the Premier League and one name stands out from the rest.

What’s the word?

According to The Athletic’s Phil Hay, the Yorkshire giants “rate” Brentford’s Ollie Watkins as one of several options they’re eyeing up from the division they have just won.

It’s claimed that the club believes the Bees talisman could suit Marcelo Bielsa’s system to a tee – strong link-up play, slick finishing and is a similar profile to Patrick Bamford, albeit one with a better conversion rate.

The Athletic have previously reported that the 24-year-old could be available for just £18m due to a release clause in the contract he signed back in August.

Exciting addition

One huge stumbling block to the deal will be down to whether or not the Bees join United in the Premier League – if they defeat local rivals Fulham at Wembley next week, then it could be curtains.

Although that shouldn’t stop Leeds trying to chance their arm, especially at just £18m as a deal like that presents far greater reward at a lower risk. It’s certainly not going to be Jean-Kevin Augustin 2.0.

As Hay says in his piece, Watkins is a glove for Bielsa’s style of football and one that is substantially better than Bamford.

Before the playoff final, the young Englishman has bagged 26 goals, averaging 2.6 shots, 1.5 key passes and 0.9 dribbles per game, via WhoScored.

Such a fit is emphasised by Brentford boss Thomas Frank who lauded him after their 1-o win over Preston last month, he said: “All the praise to Ollie – he’s done amazing. He’s a pleasure to work with in terms of his determination, his desire. The key thing for me to coach him this year was his position in the box for crosses and he has improved that massively, he has also improved his link-up play.”

The praise doesn’t just stop there with former Hammer Trevor Sinclair comparing him to Jermain Defoe. Leeds should absolutely try to snag Watkins from Brentford – there probably isn’t a better fit out there right now.

Newcastle United: Keith Downie says Magpies could be without six key men against Manchester City

Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie has revealed on his official Twitter page that Newcastle United could be without as many as six key players available for this evening’s clash away to Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium as Steve Bruce faces a possible injury crisis ahead of the game.

As per the journalist, Isaac Hayden and Sean Longstaff have been ruled out already and Allan Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron are major doubts, with Jamaal Lascelles and Andy Carroll also doubtful for the match against last season’s Premier League champions.

They have all featured regularly throughout a satisfying season for the Tyneside club in 2019/20 as they reached an FA Cup quarter-final and have now been confirmed as mathematically safe from relegation from the Premier League.

Almiron has made 38 appearances in all competitions so far in this term, Hayden 34, Longstaff, Lascelles and Saint-Maximin 28 and Carroll 19, according to Transfermarkt.

Four of these players also started the Magpies’ last game in the 2-2 draw at St. James’ Park against West Ham United on Sunday, with Carroll coming off the substitutes’ bench, as per Sofascore.

Perhaps the biggest loss out of all of these players would be Saint-Maximin, as the 23-year old has been a revelation for Newcastle so far in the Premier League, scoring three goals and making four assists in 22 matches whilst also creating eight big chances and averaging 4.6 successful dribbles and 1.3 key passes (via Sofascore).

His absence, along with those of up to five other regular players, could be a significant blow for Bruce’s teamÂif they are to have any chance of beating Man City, given their contributions already in this campaign.

Sheffield Wednesday: Dom Howson believes Garry Monk should be given a chance

Yorkshire Live’s Dom Howson believes Garry Monk should be given time to rebuild this Sheffield Wednesday team.

In his latest Q&A session, one Wednesdayite asked whether Monk will be the man in charge on the first day of the new season. Howson responded by saying the club should keep the 41-year-old at the hilt of the team for at the least the 2020/21 opener, in order to provide stability.

“There have been too many managerial changes in recent years,” the Yorkshire Live reporter wrote. “I appreciate they could do little about Steve Bruce leaving to take the Newcastle United job but I hope they give Monk the time, patience and resources to rebuild the team.

“There needs to be big change at Hillsborough and I can see Chansiri giving Monk the opportunity to reshape the squad this summer.”

Wednesday are currently 15th in the Championship table after succumbing to 15 losses throughout the season. Monk has come under a lot of scrutiny lately following his side’s recent poor run of form, but a successful transfer window could be just what he needs to get the Owls back on side.

As it stands, the Yorkshire outfit could be facing a mass exodus in the summer, as 12 senior players approach the ends of their contracts. Five more first team personnel will also be departing the club following the expiry of their loan deals.

If all or the vast majority of these players leave, it will be an alarming reality for Wednesdayites but it could be the making of Monk as manager. His summer business will surely be a make-or-break situation for his career at Hillsborough. If the gaffer can bring in some young talent and get the roster looking healthy again, Wednesday could have a shot at promotion next season.

However, if Monk fails to adequately replace those looking destined to leave, surely it will be curtains for the 41-year-old.

Ancelotti effect could help Everton sign Koulibaly, says Mills

In an exclusive interview with Football Insider, Danny Mills has suggested that Carlo Ancelotti’s presence at Everton could help them secure the services of Napoli colossus Kalidou Koulibaly.

What’s the word?

Ancelotti’s arrival at Everton could be a game changer for the club both on the pitch and in the transfer market.

The Italian has worked with some of the most talented players in modern footballing history, including the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paolo Maldini.

During his time at Napoli he worked with one of the most highly-rated central defenders on the planet, namely Koulibaly.

And according to journalist Fabio Santini, the Serie A star could be on his way out of the club in the not too distant future.

While speaking on Il Process (via Arena Napoli), Santini suggested that a handful of Napoli players don’t have futures at the club, with Koulibaly and Hirving Lozano two of the players name-checked by the journalist.

In response to these reports, Football Insider asked Mills whether the Senegal international could move to Goodison Park in the future and he suggested that Ancelotti’s presence would offer a big incentive.

“Yes. World class players that he has worked with and players that know him. It is a big incentive.

“Players know what they are getting into and players like familiarity. I think, Koulibaly, he is an absolute definite.

“If a manager like that comes knocking it does spark your interest more than normal, that is for sure.

“The only worry for Everton is that the transfer window could be very brief and very quick. It could be shortened – we do not know. Is the British transfer window going to coincide with the rest of Europe?

“Everton is a work in progress but most things are now in place. Recruitment of top quality players is now crucial.”

Ancelotti effect

There is little doubt that Ancelotti gives the Toffees a new dynamic in the transfer market.

He is one of the most revered and successful managers in the modern game having won three Champions Leagues and a multitude of domestic titles across Europe’s most prestigious divisions.

Not only will the 60-year-old manager play a role in bringing in players he’s previously worked with, such as Koulibaly, he will also be a major pulling factor for players who are looking to elevate their status in Premier League football.

If he can indeed help Everton pull off a major coup with a deal for Koulibaly, it could well convince other elite players to make the move to the blue half, rather than the red half, of Merseyside.

Wolves’ persistent look at Dani Olmo throws doubt at Morgan Gibbs-White’s future

Wolverhampton Wanderers are gearing up for a busy winter.

They’ll do battle with old foes Norwich City this weekend before hosting the defending Premier League champions Manchester City the day after Boxing Day, and then there’s the small matter of Liverpool less than 48 hours later.

The west Midlanders are also expected to be active in the transfer market as manager Nuno Santo revealed that he very much intends to bolster his squad in January, although he wouldn’t say too much on who or what position.

BirminghamLive claimed that the club were primarily after central options in defence and midfield, and that could well be the case looking at who they have been linked with since the summer.

One name that just won’t go away is Spanish playmaker Dani Olmo, who plies his trade in Croatia for Dinamo Zagreb.

According to Sportske Novosti, Wolves sent scouts to watch the 21-year-old in action when Manchester City welcomed his side in the Champions League last week.

Olmo delivered by scoring Zagreb’s only goal in their 4-1 defeat at the Etihad Stadium, a happy hunting ground for the old gold having won there earlier in the season.

The attacking midfielder has scored seven and also assisted seven in 21 appearances in all competitions this campaign, per Transfermarkt, making him seem like a very worthy transfer target.

Although it remains to be seen whether or not a bid will come in for the former Barcelona man, his arrival would lump major uncertainty over the future of home-grown prospect Morgan Gibbs-White.

The 19-year-old academy graduate has barely featured this season and is currently out through injury. His return could coincide with any midfield addition next month, meaning his chances of earning game time under Nuno get even slimmer.

Calling all Premier League experts: Who do these unique statistics belong to? Find out below….

A loan move could soon become the only way to revive his career at Molineux – he’s made just one start in the top-flight this campaign, and despite playing an advanced role, he’s only ever got on the scoresheet once in his entire Wolves career.

That really puts things into perspective considering Olmo, who is rated at £27m by Transfermarkt, has bettered that sevenfold.

Gibbs-White will surely be worried about how January will pan out.

Meanwhile, Kevin Thelwell’s warning shouldn’t deter them from going for glory in the Europa League this season…
