Celtic: Fans excited as Dylan Corr signs first professional contract

A lot of Celtic fans are excited to see that the club are looking towards the future as young player Dylan Corr has announced on Twitter that he has signed his first professional contract with the Scottish side.

The surname of the new youth prospect might ring a bell with the Hoops faithful as Dylan is the sun of former Scottish footballer Barry John Corr, who only featured once for the Celts (as per Soccerbase). Similar to his son, Barry started in the youth academy at the club, but after failing to establish himself at Parhead, he went to fellow Scottish side Motherwell (as per Transfermarkt).

However, the Corr family will hope Dylan can have a more successful career at the club, and there is a great range of young talent at the Celts right now who he can seek to emulate. Seventeen-year-old right winger Karamoko Dembele has already made three senior appearances for the club, including one in the Europa League.

It looks like Celtic fans are getting a glimpse of their future earlier than expected and Corr will hope he can follow in Dembele’s footsteps.

Here is what some Hoops fans had to say following the youngster’s announcement:

Newcastle United: Noel Whelan thinks Steve Bruce faces uncertain future depending on outcome of proposed takeover

Former Leeds and Middlesbrough striker Noel Whelan has cast doubt on Steve Bruce’s future as Newcastle manager in comments made to Football Insider.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Bruce admitted that he is “in the dark” over the prospective takeover at St James’ Park but insisted that he would “love to be part of it” if the proposed deal is successful.

However, Whelan believes that the would-be owners will already have big plans in place for the Tyneside club and that a decision will have already been made over the 59-year-old. He said of Bruce:

“He knows his job isn’t concrete, that’s what I think he knows. There are big plans for Newcastle, there’s a lot of exciting names being bandied about players who might come into the club.

“Who wouldn’t want to be the manager taking over a Gareth Bale or Edison Cavani, all these players being tipped to come in. Who wouldn’t think they wouldn’t do very well? I think I’d do very well as well and I’ve got no managerial experience! It’s like going into Harrods with a blank chequebook, it’s fantastic, you’d love it, you’d have great fun.

“I think he knows his job is under pressure, Pochettino’s one that seems to be the favourite and the thing is its kind of out of his hands. The thing is he’s got to finish the season as well as he can possibly can for his own sake because it’s his club that he supports.

“If it’s not going to be him, he’s going to walk away with his head held high. It’s out of his hands, the new owners will make that decision if not already made that decision. I think they will have already realised and made a decision on Steve Bruce’s future.”

It is perhaps fair to say that Bruce has guided the Magpies in a relatively decent season so far, as they sit rather comfortably in 13th place in the Premier League table on 35 points at the moment, eight points above the relegation zone with nine games left for them to play, as per BBC. They are also still in the FA Cup with a home match against Manchester City still left to play, assuming that competition does eventually resume.

In 35 games in all competitions this campaign, Bruce’s side have won 12, drawn 10 and lost 13, scoring 39 goals and conceding 52, according to Transfermarkt.

However, despite his respectable return, Bruce may be asked to make way by the new owners and Whelan believes that his fate may have already been sealed. Granted, the Englishman is technically not their appointment, and so the Saud-led consortium may be looking for a fresh new face to take charge of the Toon in time for the next term – if their bid to take over from current owner Mike Ashley eventually goes through.

Geordies, how do you think Bruce has fared this season? Comment below with your views!

Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer declares Jesse Lingard is "back"

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Speaking after the club’s 2-1 defeat to FC Astana, Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has hailed Jesse Lingard’s performance.

What did he say?

The England international was named captain for the Europa League clash on Thursday night, as United fielded their youngest ever starting eleven in major European competition.

Despite being unable to inspire his team to victory, Lingard did manage to break his 28-game goal-scoring duck with a fine strike in the first-half and recorded an impressive 97 touches, with Solskjaer later praising the attacking midfielder’s influence.

He said (as quoted by the club’s official website): “Goalscoring is important for forwards, of course, and Jesse scored a very good goal. But I thought his performance was top class. He led the team by example: energy, drive, he scored a goal, and he was great in the dressing room. So he’s done himself proud today, I think.

“I thought Jesse was excellent. He is nearly 27 and an experienced player, and he’s been very good on the whole trip with the young boys. I’m very pleased with his performance on the pitch as well. It’s good to have Jesse back.”

Confidence

Make no mistake about it, Lingard’s goal is a major confidence booster for a player who has been devoid of it for some time now. The fact he had gone 28 games without scoring one despite playing as an attacking midfielder just under-lined his incredible struggles, culminating in Solskjaer preferring the likes of Juan Mata and Andreas Pereira in the number ten role.

Lingard has played ten times in the Premier League, but that has only amounted to 444 minutes of action, with him either coming off the bench or being hooked before the game has finished. Amid suggestions the club are looking to sign James Maddison from Leicester, the United ace scoring has just come at the right time in respect to his own personal future at the club.

Meanwhile, Manchester United fans have slammed one academy prospect for his performance in the defeat to FC Astana.

Sunderland fans react to reports of FPP Sunderland completing investment deal

A selection of Black Cats fans have been reacting to reports from the Sunderland Echo claiming FPP Sunderland have completed their investment into the Stadium of Light outfit.

It is alleged that the group have agreed on a deal to invest a ‘substantial sum’ into the League One side, but only on the ownership side of the club.

The funds are believed to be heading toward improving Sunderland’s recruitment and academy structures – amongst other infrastructure – and will be directed to Sunderland’s holding company Madrox Partners, with Donald maintaining his 74% controlling ownership of the Black Cats and the other share percentages in the club remaining exactly the same.

Methven is quoted as telling the Echo that FPP Sunderland’s investment will be ‘in our management of the club’.

“The deal that we’ve signed is for FPP Sunderland to invest a very substantial sum into our management of the club,” he said. “Really, it’s to embark on phase two of the rebuild of Sunderland, having had a gruelling 18 months stripping everything back to ensure there’s no wastage anywhere.

“It’s now time to start building again. We’ve always been clear that would require a bit of investment, from our very early interviews and podcasts, and we said that it was no good suddenly looking for it when we needed it.”

Reacting to the report, one Sunderland fan has declared that it reads like the owners have just been given a bonus, while others are sceptical about how the ownership structure hasn’t changed despite a considerable investment.

Here’s a look at what Black Cats fans have been saying about the report…

Leicester fans think they can win the league again

Leicester City fans on Twitter genuinely believe that they can win the league after they thrashed Southampton 9-0 at St Mary’s on Friday night.

You can’t blame the Foxes fanbase for having this line of thinking either. A scoreline of 9-0 is the joint biggest win in Premier League history.

Normally, if a fanbase of a team of Leicester’s stature started talking about winning the Premier League title you’d put it down to delusion, but we’ve been here before, haven’t we?

Of course, nobody needs reminding of what happened in the 2015/16 season when Claudio Ranieri guided the East Midlands outfit to the most unlikely of title wins.

Could lightning strike twice? The Foxes are playing some fantastic football, and they moved to second in the table with the thrilling win at St. Mary’s.

Whether or not Leicester can challenge for the title this season remains to be seen, but after Friday night’s showing, anyone would be a fool to write them off.

Here’s what the fanbase have been saying on Twitter…

Man City fans react to Erling Braut Haaland transfer report

Manchester City fans have expressed their desire to see Erling Braut Haaland join the club following a report from The Guardian.

Reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano has reported that City are amongst 20 clubs seeking the striker’s signature. Other clubs mentioned are gargantuan sides such as Juventus, Manchester United and the Spanish giants.

Haaland has become one of the most wanted men in Europe this season after a truly remarkable start to this campaign. The Norwegian has an astonishing 22 goals in 15 appearances across the board, and his six goals in the Champions League put him as the top scorer in the competition.

Fans are desperate to see the RB Salzburg man join the club, with one fan even saying “spend 500 mil”. Other supporters have alluded to City’s nature to cross the ball into the box lately, and how the likes of Kevin De Bruyne would rack up the assists should the 6ft 3 striker be there.

Another fan has even looked into the future at how he could be a replacement for Sergio Aguero.

At just 19 years old, one European giant could have a goalscoring machine on their hands for years and years with Haaland.

City fans are hoping that it is they who prize him away…

West Brom’s predicted starting XI for their trip to QPR on Saturday

[ad_pod ]

West Brom will be looking to extend their unbeaten run to a ninth straight Championship game as they head to Loftus Road to face Queens Park Rangers.

It wouldn’t be too much of a shock to see plenty of goals in this fixture given that West Brom are yet to keep a clean sheet and the Rs have conceded in 88% of their matches.

Mark Warburton’s side are one place behind the Baggies in the table with only goal difference separating the two teams.

Neither team played in the Carabao Cup in midweek so they will be raring to go for this encounter.

But will Slaven Bilic make any significant changes to the side that is yet to taste defeat?

The Croatian will be buoyed by the returns of Kieran Gibbs, Hal Robson-Kanu and even Ahmed Hegazi from their respective injuries this weekend, but it is unlikely that any break into the starting XI.

Gibbs, in particular, faces a tough task to do so as academy graduate Nathan Ferguson has deputised emphatically, so much so that he could stake a claim on that position being his own – he has recorded two straight ratings above 7.00 by WhoScored.

Filip Krovinovic was drafted in against Huddersfield, but that appeared to be a mistake as Bilic hauled him off at half-time for Grady Diangana, who became the game-changer for the second time this season.

The West Ham loanee is likely to start here this weekend which means Matheus Pereira is pushed back into the number ten role at the Croatian’s expense.

Upfront, bit-part man Kenneth Zohore could return to the fold as Charlie Austin still searches for his first league goal in a Baggies shirt.

The £8m summer arrival has started four of his seven appearances.

The rest of the squad is likely to remain very much the same as six players have started all eight of their Championship matches.

Newcastle fans react to Fabian Schar’s impressive goal for Switzerland

[ad_pod ]

He really does have a liking for scoring some impressive goals doesn’t he? Fabian Schar added another fine strike to his collection on Thursday as Switzerland were held to a 1-1 draw by the Republic of Ireland in their EURO 2020 qualifying clash.

The Newcastle man has already shown his penchant for some absolute screamers in his time at St. James’ Park, and it appears he does the exact same for his country too.

The centre-back finished off a flowing team move with a curling strike from just inside the box, and reminded everyone why he could probably play further forward in the team.

After seeing the 27-year-old’s latest beauty, Newcastle fans flooded to Twitter to shower the former Basel man with praise.

Many supporters of the Tyneside club suggested Schar could be the side’s new number nine, and wondered whether they should “chuck him up front” for the next game.

Some Magpies fans insisted if a transfer offer ever came in for the defender, they wouldn’t be happy with “a penny under £1billion”.

Check out some of the reaction of Newcastle fans below:

Arsenal’s predicted XI against Eintracht Frankfurt

[ad_pod ]

Although it is not exactly where he wants to be, Unai Emery will be hoping his Arsenal side have a good run in the Europa League this term.

The Gunners will kick off their European campaign against Eintracht Frankfurt at the Commerzbank Arena in what should be an interesting match-up, what with the German giants having reached the semi-finals of last year’s tournament, and the north Londoners finishing as runners-up.

The former Sevilla boss is likely to rotate his squad, regardless, so here we look at how the Gunners could line up against the Bundesliga outfit.

Emery has a history of swapping his goalkeepers between the league and the cup competitions.

Last season, Petr Cech started in 16 of the 20 cup matches the Gunners played in, whilst Bernd Leno was selected more often than not in the English top flight. With the 124-time Czech Republic international having retired at the end of the past campaign, Emiliano Martinez is now Arsenal’s number two. Thus, the chances are high that he will be chosen between the sticks.

Although Hector Bellerin and Kieran Tierney are back in full training, it is still surely too early to start them. As such, Sead Kolasinac and Ainsley Maitland-Niles should keep their places at full-back.

Rob Holding is also close to full fitness but, once again, it would be a big risk to select him. Sokratis and David Luiz have both struggled this term, averaging 6.55 and 6.37 respectively in their WhoScored ratings, and the former, having played a game more, could be dropped to the bench. Calum Chambers is the only other centre-back who is fully fit, and could, therefore, enter the fray.

Joe Willock and Lucas Torreira should be named in midfield, having sat out the draw with Watford, with Dani Ceballos the only one of the previous midfield trio to keep his place.

In a 4-3-3 formation, Nicolas Pepe and Reiss Nelson should start on the flanks. The latter has not played from the beginning since August 17th, making him one of the fresher bodies in the squad, and a lack of realistic alternatives – only Maitland-Niles can really play there apart from Pepe and he is starting at right-back – should give the former another chance to prove himself.

Alexandre Lacazette’s injury, which will keep him out of the side until October, leaves Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as the only striker currently at his manager’s disposal. Whether Emery would like to rest him or not, he has little choice but to give him the nod on Thursday.
