Shezi, Paterson set up huge Cobras win

A round-up of the Sunfoil Series matches that ended on March 1, 2015

ESPNcricinfo staff01-Mar-2015Mthokozisi Shezi and Dane Paterson both finished with five-fors, helping Cape Cobras to a 170-run victory against Titans in Paarl. Cobras, batting first, lost wickets at regular intervals, but a 61-run stand between Dane Piedt (66) and Travis Muller for the ninth wicket powered the team to 308.Titans replied with 50-plus stands for the first two wickets, but lost their momentum after Graeme van Buuren’s dismissal in the 39th over. Shezi collected 6 for 51, as Titans folded for 175 in 65 overs. With a 133-run lead in hand, Dane Vilas further enforced Cobras’ advantage, his unbeaten 100 guiding the team to 341 for 7 after which they declared. It meant Titans needed 475 for the win, but once again, they failed to capitalise on a strong start. Dean Elgar and Henry Davids both stroked fifties during a 154-run association for the second wicket, but Paterson ran through their middle order, picking up 5 for 63 to bowl them out for 304.Knights just about hung on for a draw against Dolphins in Durban. Following on after conceding a first-innings lead of 218, Knights were buoyed by a 110-run opening stand between Gihahn Cloete (80) and Reeza Hendricks (45), but Mathew Pillans gave Dolphins an opening, taking 4 for 62 to wreck Knights’ top order. Knights continued to lost wickets at regular intervals, and at 202 for 9, were heading towards an innings loss. However, the final-wicket pair of Malusi Siboto and Quinton Friend dug in, playing out almost 16 overs to secure the draw. The result would’ve been a blow to Dolphins, who dominated the game after compiling a first-innings total of 455 for 5. That score was built around centuries from Divan van Wyk (171) and Morne van Wyk (103*), as well as a patient 67 from Daryn Smit. Pilans then had Knights in bigger trouble, as he notched six scalps (6 for 67) to bundle them out for 237. Dolphins, though, couldn’t go all the way and register only their third win of the season.Bad light cruelly denied Lions the chance to extend their lead at the top of the table. Chasing just 98 to beat Warriors in East London, Lions made their way to 81 for 4 with 14 overs still scheduled but the light faded and no further play was possible. Early progress was stalled by a burst of 4 for 13 from Andrew Birch. Temba Bavuma and Thami Tsolekile steadied and were taking Lions to victory before they were denied by the light.Earlier, it looked light no chase would be needed when Warriors slipped to 100 for 5 still 74 runs behind but Colin Ingram and Darryl Brown settled with a stand of exactly 100, both men making half-centuries. Chris Morris removed both and Hardus Viljoen picked up 5 for 70 as Lions reduced the target to double figures – which would have been fewer but for a 10th wicket stand of 32 – only to be denied in their pursuit by the dying of the light.

Leach shows Worcester character

Worcestershire showed the character that has taken them to the top of Division Two to leave their match against Derbyshire in the balance at the end of the third day at the Racecourse.A seventh wicket stand of 117 in 37 overs between Joe Leach, who made 71 and Shaaiq Choudhry, 44, lifted Worcestershire to 385 and a lead of 29 with Mark Footitt taking 6 for 115.Ben Slater, with 65, and Billy Godleman scored half-centuries in an opening stand of 125 – Derbyshire’s highest in the Championship this season – but they both fell before the close to leave the home side 116 in front at 145 for 2, giving both teams a chance of victory on the last day.Worcestershire were still behind the game going into day three 135 runs adrift but by the time the seventh-wicket pair were parted, they were closing in on a lead. Derbyshire’s bowling lacked the intensity and consistency of the second day and bright sunshine made batting easier but Leach and Choudhry played with increasing authority, scoring at just under four an over.Although there was still some playing and missing, the batsmen were on top and 58 came in the first hour with Leach reaching a 50 that included eight fours from 95 balls. He pulled the left-arm spin of David Wainwright to the midwicket boundary to bring up the 100 stand and had batted for a minute short of three hours when he left a ball from offspinner Wes Durston and was bowled.Choudhry followed two balls later when he was caught behind down the leg side to give Footitt his 150th first-class wicket for Derbyshire but he had played a valuable innings and there was more resistance to come as Worcestershire moved into credit.Mitchell McClenaghan had disappointed with the ball but the New Zealander batted with application in partnership with Jack Shantry to add 51 for the ninth wicket in 19 overs. McClenaghan whipped Wainwright through midwicket for four to put his team in front but was bowled by Durston in the next over, leaving Shantry 37 to play some attacking strokes against Footitt for 37 before he edged the fast bowler to first slip.Derbyshire would have anticipated starting their second innings with a decent lead rather than a deficit of 29 but Slater and Godleman settled any nerves there may have been in the home camp with the county’s third century opening stand of the season in the Championship. Godleman survived a confident appeal for lbw against McClenaghan but the runs flowed after tea with both openers passing 50 before two late wickets raised Worcestershire’s hopes.McClenaghan’s return brought the breakthrough when Godleman edged a full-length ball and Ben Cox dived to his left to take the catch and Slater joined him the pavilion three overs later. Choudhry’s switch to the City End accounted for Slater, who was bowled driving for 65, and Worcestershire’s position would have been even better if skipper Daryl Mitchell had not dropped both Chesney Hughes and skipper Wayne Madsen at slip before stumps.Leach admitted the late drops could have cost them: “We probably started the day behind the eight ball and it’s a shame we couldn’t have held on to those catches late on. We can still push hard for the win but we need early wickets in the morning and, if not, we have to keep it as tight as we can so they don’t get away from us.”Madsen, the Derbyshire captain, also believes his side can force victory: “We are still in a position where we can win the game. It would have been ideal if we had bowled them out earlier and had a lead but they played well in the morning session to get past us. But we’ve set ourselves up for what could be a very interesting day tomorrow.”

Stewart refutes Smith quit claims

Surrey director of cricket Alec Stewart has refuted claims that Graeme Smith may be about to retire, following a series of tweets that gave the impression Smith would not be returning to The Oval.Smith is currently in his second year of a three year contract with Surrey but has once again not been able to complete a full season through injury. This year it was a fractured knee, diagnosed earlier in the week, which forced him to return home on Monday night.Smith’s activity on social media seemed to suggest he was packing in entirely; thanking the club and the staff and saying it had been a privilege to be a part of Surrey. But Stewart, who drove back from Surrey’s game at Chelmsford to take Smith and his family to the airport last night, confirmed that the former South Africa captain has “a lot to consider” regarding his future.Upon returning home, Smith will consult with a specialist, who is expected to recommend surgery on the knee. From there, recovery and rehab will determine whether Smith will be able to return for the back end of the 2014 season, something that Stewart, with his “very limited knowledge” on the injury sustained, feels is unlikely.”I had a good chat with him last night,” Stewart told ESPNcricinfo. “Where he is, he’s thoroughly enjoyed his time with Surrey, despite it being two very brief periods over the last two years. He’s still under contract for next year – it’s a three year deal that he has signed.”After seeing his knee specialist, he will find out exactly what the way forward is and, from there, whether he’ll be out for a matter of weeks or months. As soon as we have more information, from the damage to the knee, we’ll be in a better position to say if he is coming back or not. I would have thought it was doubtful.”

Rain ruins third day at Chelmsford

Surrey’s ambitions to press ahead at Chelmsford were ruined by the rain as just 16 overs of play were possible on the third day through a combination of early morning rain and afternoon gloom.
Play commenced at 1.30pm after an early lunch and it was not quite the droll of the second day with 57 runs scored, even if the enthusiasm out in the middle matched the dim surroundings.
There were moments of class from Steve Davies and stand-in captain Gary Wilson; the former square driving his way to a third Championship fifty of the season. Wilson, too, impressed on the front foot, the ball skidding off the damp outfield to the boundary with great ease as he found his touch to take Surrey to another batting point.
Aside from the will of supporters, Davies was the only victim of the day when indecisive footwork saw him trapped in front by a slightly quicker delivery from Monty Panesar.
Surrey have a lead of 33 runs and, at this juncture, are in control of the game in terms of whether day four is anything more than a sodden bore. In truth, Gareth Batty’s first innings eight-for aside, this match should be consigned to a scrap heap.

It was during the second innings at Kent that Smith began feeling some discomfort in his knee. Surrey’s medical team did their best to manage the injury, prescribing painkillers to give Smith some comfort, but when the effects of those wore off, even walking proved a struggle. He batted superbly in the fourth innings of the following game against Gloucestershire, registering his first Championship hundred for Surrey to see them home for a first win of the season and a first victory under Smith. But even here he did not look right, at times hobbling between the wicket on the final day, even requiring medical attention in the middle when he was nearly run out by opening partner Rory Burns.Smith then played Twenty20 matches against Sussex and Somerset before scans confirmed a fracture in his knee and medical attention was required. He may now have played his last game.Without Smith, Surrey are again looking for a replacement captain. Gary Wilson has assumed the role for the current Championship match against Essex. Stewart, while impressed with Wilson’s handling of the responsibility over the last few days – he has also keeping wicket so that Steve Davies can focus on his batting – has stated that there is no certainty that Wilson will be in charge for the rest of the season. As for Smith’s replacement as overseas player, Hashim Amla has been signed until June 25, which will take him to the end of the Championship game against Leicestershire at The Oval. He will miss the upcoming four day game against Worcestershire as he returns to South Africa to attend a Cricket South Africa awards dinner and could be unveiled as the new South Africa Test captain.Stewart confirmed that Surrey will be in the market for another overseas player but conceded that the international schedule will make things tricky. Every Test nation is involved in one series or another before the end of the county season.”We’ll look at options and decide if there is one that will enhance our squad,” Steward said. “If there isn’t anyone we feel would better the squad, then we won’t sign one. All that will be looked at over the next four weeks.”It remains to be seen just how much Championship cricket Kevin Pietersen will play. He arrives at the club in the next few days from captaining the Dehli Daredevils in the IPL and will line up for Surrey in their NatWest T20 Blast fixture against Middlesex on Friday evening. Primarily on a T20 contract, he has no obligation to play four day or even 50-over cricket, but has the option to make himself available for either of those formats.Pietersen is also set to play in the Caribbean Premier League for the St Lucia Zouks, but Stewart confirmed that Pietersen’s involvement in the competition will not involve missing T20 games for Surrey.

O meio-campista cruzou e Michel cabeceou contra o próprio gol, 1 a 1.

– Eu fui no lance, tentei cabecear a bola e participei.

Bruno Henrique deve voltar ao time

Full text of the PCB’s release on the Integrity Committee Recommendation on Nadeem Ghauri and Anis Siddiqui

13-Apr-2013Pursuant to allegations that 2 Pakistani Umpires, Nadeem Ghauri and Anis Siddiqui, were willing to accept money/financial remuneration to grant favourable/dubious umpiring decisions leveled by an Indian television channel, India TV, in its expose in the first week of October 2012, the PCB had constituted an Inquiry Committee to probe in to the matter. The Inquiry Committee comprised of Mr. Ehsan Sadiq Director Vigilance and Security, Mr. Intikhab Alam, Director Game Development and Barrister Salman Naseer, Manager Legal. The Committee obtained unedited video footage from the India TV along with all relevant evidence available with the International Cricket Council (ICC). After authenticating all the adduced evidence, inclusive of an exhaustive forensic investigation with the assistance of a specialist body in Punjab Forensic Science Agency (PFSA), the two umpires, Ghauri and Siddiqui, were asked to give a written submissions explaining their version of events, and were subsequently cross examined by the Inquiry Committee.Inquiry Committee’s Observations and Recommendations
The Committee noted that after coming to know about the exaggerated amounts to be paid to them for umpiring assignments, both umpires failed to exercise caution and sound judgment, which resulted in their entrapment in the said Sting Operation; despite their skepticism about the true credentials of the persons they were talking to and the methodology adopted by them, the two umpires remained engaged with them in prolonged and questionable conversations with regard to potential umpiring roles and dubious decision-making; the submissions made by both umpires failed to corroborate/correlate with the contents of the authenticated video footage of the said Sting Operation; and that, prima facie, there is sufficient material to initiate disciplinary proceedings against Nadeem Ghauri and Anis Siddiqui.”The Committee recommended referring the matter to “PCB’s Integrity Committee for further necessary action, and also that both Ghauri and Siddiqui not be considered for any umpiring assignment or participation in any form of cricket till the matter is pending before the Integrity Committee.”Other recommendations included, increasing of awareness programs inclusive of lectures and training workshops to be conducted by PCB to ensure that the umpires fully comprehend the parameters/guidelines of the Codes of Conduct in order to safeguard against such incidents taking place in future; adopting a proactive approach to ensure the prevention of such incidents involving umpires and any other match officials; and bringing all players, support personnel and match officials associated with PCB under a strict vigilance regime and comprehensive monitoring mechanism at the earliest. In accordance with the recommendations of the Inquiry Committee, Chairman Ch. Zaka Ashraf presided over a meeting of the Integrity Committee of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) today at the National Cricket Academy (April 13, 2013) to examine and determine the guilt of Nadeem Ghauri and Anis Siddiqui in relation to the allegations leveled against them. The following members of the PCB Integrity Committee were in attendance:M. Zaka Ashraf, ChairmanJustice (R) Sheikh Abdul Rashid, MemberSubhan Ahmad, MemberZakir Khan, Member Intikhab Alam, MemberThe report of the Inquiry Committee was perused by the members of the Integrity Committee, relevant clips of the Skype conversations which incriminate both the umpires was viewed and the Committee personally heard both the said umpires. The matter was deliberated by the members of the Integrity Committee at length and they were of the unanimous view that substantial incriminating material was available on record suggestive of the fact that both the umpires were willing to compromise their integrity in discharge of their professional duties. The members of the Committee were thus unanimous in their view that the said two umpires cannot be cleared of the allegations leveled against them. Consequently, the Integrity Committee unanimously recommended as under:” 1. That Mr. Nadeem Ghauri being a former test cricketer and also elevated to the elite panel of umpires of ICC and PCB’s International panel (with 13 years standing) straight away agreed to extend undue favours for material gains, therefore, he cannot be cleared for consideration of appointment as an umpire/match official or in any other capacity in any form of cricket held/organized/supervised/conducted/controlled under the aegis of the PCB for a period of four years from the date of institution of Inquiry i.e. 11th October 2012. Further, during the said period he may not be considered for association/appointment with PCB in any other form or position.2. That Mr. Anis Siddiqui being only a domestic umpire with lesser experience of only 8 years did not straight away fall prey to the undue suggestions made by India TV Sting Operatives and kept on resisting their undue demands repeatedly, but finally conceded to them on their persistence. Keeping in view his limited exposure to International Cricket and Codes of Conduct, his case is of mitigating circumstances and therefore he cannot be cleared for consideration of appointment as an umpire/match official or in any other capacity in any form of cricket held/organized/supervised/conducted/controlled under the aegis of the PCB for a period of three years from the date of institution of Inquiry i.e. 11th October 2012. Further, he may not be considered for association/appointment with PCB in any other form or position. The Pakistan Cricket Board has endorsed these recommendations.Commenting on the occasion Chairman PCB Ch. M. Zaka Ashraf said, “The PCB has a zero tolerance policy for corruption or indiscipline. We are committed on creating awareness amongst our players and officials with regards to the possible pitfalls, and are determined to adopt all vigilance and security parameters, which are in line with the laid out procedures of the ICC. Today’s decision reiterates the commitment of the PCB to keep our great sport free of all corrupt practices”.
