Will missing out on Marco Reus come back to haunt Liverpool?

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge couldn’t help himself in further stirring the pot in the rivalry between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund. The Bayern CEO recently gave away details of Marco Reus’ contract, with the player’s release clause set to kick in next year, and then went on to hint that the Bavarians could be in the hunt for the Dortmund forward.

Having lost Robert Lewandowski, Mario Goetze and Shinji Kagawa and consecutive summers, it appears Dortmund will lose Reus as well in a year’s time, with the player thus far reluctant to increase his salary with the club and in turn remove the release clause, which stands somewhere between €25-35 million.

One team who will almost certainly miss out is Liverpool, who were linked with the German international earlier in the window. The club have denied the reports, but that didn’t stop the logs being added to the fire as the club pursue another forward addition this summer.

In further angering Borussia Dortmund, Bayern have made no secret of the admiration for Reus. There will of course be interest in the player, such is Bayern’s history of hoovering up the best talent in Germany. But the club’s public image – which has already taken a battering after the signings of Goetze and Lewandowski – may force a halt before anything formal takes place.

Instead, it’s been suggested that Reus will head to Manchester United next year, which would make sense due to the lack of quality in the wide positions at Old Trafford and the age of Robin van Persie. Beyond the Dutchman and Wayne Rooney, there is no clearly identifiable top talent for the forward position at the club.

It’s difficult to paint Liverpool’s missed chance at Reus as something which will come back to haunt them, because, as has been said by the club, there was never any interest to begin with.

Reus would naturally have been seen as the ideal replacement for Luis Suarez at Anfield, and one more than good enough to step into the void left by the Uruguayan. But it never made sense that Brendan Rodgers would be given a clear run at the German if he came on the market this year. There is far too much interest in the player from around Europe for it to be as straightforward as that.

Instead, Liverpool have focused their financial energy on strengthening the squad, rather than attempting to replace Suarez with a like-for-like. The business at Anfield this summer has been positive, and Rodgers has added a mixture of Premier League experience and high-ceiling youth. If the club can build on their excellent season last term, they’ll be equipped once again with the tools to recruit well next summer. Reus may be an exceptional, world-class talent, but there are plenty of other good players that will be available to Rodgers.

Reus was never a goer for Liverpool, and it shouldn’t be totally discounted that he could even go on to extend his stay at Signal Iduna Park. Reus is a local who has a long-standing history with the club. But he knows his worth, he knows Dortmund will be desperate to hang on to him, and an agreement quietly away from the hysteria of the transfer window is possible.

Wigan star receives shock international call up

Wigan Athletic striker Franco Di Santo has received an international call up to the Argentina squad for their next round of fixtures.

The striker received his first call up in November for a friendly against Saudi Arabia and was able to record his debut for his country.

Despite this, the striker did not expect to again be recalled with the South American nation being able to call upon a wealth of talent.

Di Santo has however made the squad when notably Carlos Tevez failed to be included in the travelling party.

The Wigan striker believes that this is a strong indication of his progress under Roberto Martinez at the DW Stadium, and he was full of praise for his footballing education.

“When I saw my name in the squad list but Tevez’s wasn’t, it was a real surprise,” the 23-year-old told the Daily Mirror.

“It told me that what I was doing at Wigan was good. The gaffer has taught me many things.”

Di Santo has been a regular fixture in the starting line-up for the Latics so far and will be keen to maintain his form.

He is aware that regularly playing 90 minutes will increase his chances of receiving a call up.

Di Santo played the whole match at the DW stadium on Wednesday as his side lost 2-0 to Manchester City where as his fellow compatriot Carlos Tevez remained an unused substitute.

The Argentinian will hoping to feature at St James’ Park on Monday as his Wigan Athletic side take on Newcastle United in a 20:00 kick off.

Newcastle priced out of Juventus midfielder Stefano Sturaro by West Ham

According to The Chronicle, Newcastle United have been priced out of signing Stefano Sturaro, with West Ham now in pole position to sign the midfielder.

What’s the story?

Sturaro, 25, signed for Juventus in 2014 and has gone on to make 64 Serie A appearances for the Old Lady, scoring twice and providing one assist.

The defensive midfielder has been capped by Italy and it was reported recently by Italian news outlet TuttoMercatoWeb that Newcastle had made a bid of £11.4million for the player.

Is this the best World Cup ever? Give us your thoughts here and win any World Cup shirt of your choice.

But now, The Chronicle are reporting that Juventus want £17.5million for the Italian international, which West Ham are said to have bid for the player valued at £6.75million on Transfermarkt.

What does this mean for Newcastle?

With Mikel Merino’s impending departure from St James’ park, Rafa Benitez needs to strengthen the middle of the park, but he seems unlikely to spend that sort of money on a defensive midfielder.

While it is a blow for Benitez not to land his target, surely the money could be better spent elsewhere on someone like Chelsea’s Kenedy, and then finding a cheaper alternative to Sturaro in midfield.

Merino didn’t play for Newcastle in the second half of the season so they aren’t trying to replace a key first-team player, even if it is an area that needs upgrading.

It will be difficult if Newcastle have to see Sturaro lining up for West Ham next season but Benitez will have to take this on the chin and find his next target.

Tottenham fans want Pochettino to drop Aurier after narrow win

Tottenham Hotspur gave their chances of finishing in the top four of the English Premier League a big boost on Sunday after narrowly defeating Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

It took until the 88th minute for Mauricio Pochettino’s side to find the breakthrough, which predictably came from Harry Kane. It was the English striker’s 35th goal of the season, a total he’s managed in just 36 matches.

While fans were pleased with the result, the performance left a lot to be desired, with many frustrated by the side’s inability to comfortably get ahead against the Eagles.

[ad_pod ]

Much of the criticism was aimed at Serge Aurier who produced a pretty poor performance, failing to cross from the right flank accurately and even failing to take throw-ins consistently.

The Ivory Coast international joined from Paris Saint-Germain last summer but has failed to win over supporters, with many now calling for him to be dropped and replaced with Kieran Trippier.

They took to Twitter to discuss his role in the first team…

FIVE strikers Tottenham could realistically sign in January

Tottenham desperately need to sign a striker in January. A combined strikeforce of Emmanuel Adebayor, Roberto Soldado and Harry Kane have found just 21 Premier League goals since last summer, including a solitary one this season, provided by the Togo international.

It’s shown in the Premier League table too – only six clubs have recorded less than the Lilywhites’ seven goals so far this term.

Resultantly, the White Hart Lane outfit have been linked to a plethora of frontmen in the tabloids ahead of the January window, but as per usual, the majority of targets mooted are incredibly unrealistic.

So being the lovely bunch we are at Football FanCast, here’s a list of FIVE forwards who would cure Mauricio Pochettino’s striking woes, that could conceivably be lured to north London when the transfer market reopens.

It could be worse Nando, you could be one of these guys…

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar

In terms of strikers already linked with a January move to White Hart Lane, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar remains one of the stand-out names.

The Schalke assassin’s contribution to open play is infamously limited, as shown below:

And at 31 years of age, he’s no spring chicken. But the Netherlands international is absolutely lethal in front of goal; he’s bagged 35 in 65 for Oranje and 93 in 143 for the Miners – including this strike against Chelsea last week in the Champions League:

Here’s a look at Huntelaar’s top ten goals:

//www.youtube.com/embed/EBGEdveNuY4?rel=0

The 6 foot 2 striker’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season, and although Schalke have plans for a new deal, they want Huntelaar to take a wage cut.

That makes a January move increasingly likely and the German outfit will have to accept selling for a nominal fee. But the former AC Milan and Real Madrid star has also been linked to Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United and Galatasaray.

WILFRIED BONY

Mauricio Pochettino’s game-plan at Southampton depended on big-n-burley, old-fashioned centre-forwards, and he’s utilised that tactic at White Hart Lane too, favouring lanky front-man Emmanuel Adebayor over the less physical Harry Kane and Roberto Soldado.

In that regard, stocky 6 foot Swansea striker Wilfried Bony fits the bill perfectly.

Following his arrival in south Wales last summer, on the back of netting 37 times during his ultimate season at Vitesse Arnhem, the 25 year-old claimed 16 goals and four assists in his inaugural Premier League campaign. Here’s a look at some of Bony’s highlights from last term:

//www.youtube.com/embed/L_zt5akDKGs

And as viewable below, in terms of aerial dominance and hold-up play, the Ivory Coast international far exceeded Spurs’ strike-force last season:

The former Eredivisie star has struggled for form this season, with him yet to get on the score sheet. But much of that can be attributed to a rather turbulent summer, involving a World Cup and continuous links to the Premier League’s bigger sides, as Bony has recently revealed.

Tottenham were undoubtedly one of the interested parties and could revive their interest in January:

Garry Monk spent the summer denying his star striker was up for sale, but it’s known Bony comes with a £19million release clause, which is well within Spurs’ financial grasp.

PACO ALCACER

Valencia youngster Paco Alcacer is quickly emerging as one Europe’s most sought-after strikers, and has resultantly been linked to Arsenal and Chelsea to name a few:

But in my opinion, Tottenham have a decent chance of signing the 21 year-old too, not least because they can offer him Premier League football AND a greater role in the first team, compared to the Gunners and the Blues.

As viewable below, Alcacer has been nothing short of prolific over the last 18 months:

And after winning two European Championships with the U19s, Vincente del Bosque used the international break to hand the 5 foot 11 striker his competitive debut as a Spain senior. Alcacer repaid the faith, grabbing one goal and one assist against Macedonia.

The Roja starlet’s contract includes a £15million release clause, leading the Spanish press to label him ‘the bargain of Europe’.

But Valencia are aware of the growing interest in their latest prodigy, and are reportedly planning to bump up his buy-out fee to £40million before the January window:

Here’s a look at Alcacer in action:

//www.youtube.com/embed/RCKK3deKD2w?rel=0

SEYDOU DOUMBIA

Seydou Doumbia has been linked with a move to the Premier League for much of his career, but that could finally materialise in January with the striker’s CSKA Moscow contract entering its final months.

The 26 year-old is yet to be tested in a major European top flight but his returns in the Russian League and at former club Young Boys are nothing short of sensational, as viewable below:

Doumbia measures in at just 5 foot 10 but he’s powerful and sensationally quick, meeting the natural requisites of the Premier League. Here’s a look at him in action:

//www.youtube.com/embed/poul9EoEYiM?rel=0

Recent speculation surrounding the African front-man has been surprisingly limited. He was linked to Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea in April, but we haven’t heard too much since.

Perhaps they’re all eying a deal this January – if Doumbia doesn’t agree new terms, he could be available for a pittance.

According to Russian publication Izvestia however, CSKA are about to offer him a €3million per-year contract.

Andre-Pierre Gignac

Andre-Pierre Gignac’s Ligue 1 career has been patchy to say the least, but at 28 years of age, the French striker finally appears to have found his consistency in front of goal.

Here’s a look at the Marseille star’s stats over the last seven seasons:

And that’s backed up by a sensational start to the current campaign, which has seen Gignac rise to the top of the French top flight’s scoring charts – even trumping Zlatan Ibrahimovic:

Admittedly, the 6 foot 1 striker remains a bit of a punt – he doesn’t offer much to open play and has spent his entire career in French football.

But his contract is set to expire at the end of the season and a new deal is looking increasingly unlikely. L’OM suffered horrendous form last season and many of their senior players, such as Andre Ayew, appear ready to jump ship.

Gignac rejected rumours that he’d be leaving the Ligue 1 outfit in the summer, but Marseille will be forced to sell in January if their star forward is still yet to agree new terms. That could see him arrive at White Hart Lane for a nominal fee.

Here’s a look at the France international’s top five goals:

Has he been a real disappointment at Liverpool FC?

Liverpool’s on-loan midfielder Nuri Sahin has only impressed in patches so far this term, but is the fact that he’s been unable to hit the ground running in the way many would have hoped a cause for concern, or do we simply need to be more patient with him?

The 24-year-old Turkey international moved to Anfield in the summer after Arsenal baulked at the £2.8m loan fee that Real Madrid were demanding, on top of paying 70% of his £90k-per-week wages, making the move cost approximately £6.2m in total. Arsene Wenger withdrew his interest at the eleventh hour after the Spanish giants withdrew a £14m agreed buyout clause in his contract, due to the lack of security and protection the club were given if the deal happened to be a success, which allowed Liverpool to swoop.

The concern is that in the three games this season where the side have needed him to step up the most, against Arsenal, Chelsea and Everton, that he’s gone missing for prolonged periods and there’s a worry that he may be a little too similar to Joe Allen, but lacking the Welshman’s neat turn of pace to get away from his marker to be able to make an impact in the top flight, a suspicion long-since held before he came to these shores.

There’s no denying that he’s been tidy in possession, as a 92% pass completion rate against Arsenal will testify to, but he always seems to be the sacrificial lamb in games of importance. He was taken off in the 66th minute against the north London side, in the 59th minute against Chelsea and at half-time after a truly anonymous performance in the Merseyside derby during which he made just seven passes for a 54% completion rate, so why has he struggled so much?

The knock-on effect of Lucas Leiva’s injury is still being felt in the side and it’s played a part in both Allen and Sahin’s form dropping off to an extent, as they’ve had to occupy deeper roles than they may have been comfortable with. The Brazilian is back in full training now after recovering from a morale-sapping thigh injury and could return to the starting eleven over the next couple of weeks.

During his Borussia Dortmund pomp, Sahin dictated the play from deep, protected by the brute force of Sebastien Kehl or Sven Bender at different times, and he was granted more time on the ball to thread his intricate passes from range, which quickly became his trademark. However, after an injury-disrupted season spent sat largely on the bench at Real Madrid, dusting off the cobwebs after he had just gotten used to a slightly slower league in terms of tempo must be difficult and a transition period was inevitable.

You sense that Sahin would be a lot more comfortable in the role at the tip of the midfield trio just behind Suarez, a position he did well in against Norwich during the 5-2 win at Carrow Road where he is just behind the opposition’s midfield and away from the hustle and bustle to a larger degree, in a position where he can influence play more.

There’s also the fact that the club are competing in Europe this term and due to the small nature of the squad, had they just been focusing on their domestic campaign, Sahin would likely have featured more often and on a consistent week-to-week basis, but due to the thin nature of the squad, rotation is essential so that Rodgers has enough options for both competitions and Sahin’s form may have suffered at the hands of the constant chopping and changing as he tries to adapt to a new culture and climate.

At the moment, with Jose Mourinho likely to want to sell in the summer, utilising the loan market was merely a way of driving Sahin’s price up, and Liverpool remain in the driving seat for his signature, but a fee around the £14m mark would simply not be feasible, particularly as his performances simply haven’t justified such a significant outlay as of yet. Unfortunately, performances such as the two-goal match-winning display against West Brom in the Capital One Cup have been the exception rather than the rule so far.

His quality and pedigree are undeniable, but he hasn’t fully settled just yet, which if the likes of Jonjo Shelvey, Suso and Raheem Sterling hadn’t performed unexpectedly well this term for such young players, would have been much more of a problem. The jury is out on whether he has the ability to successfully integrate himself into the English game, and while it is still early days, he’ll need to do more as the season wears on if he wants to secure a permanent move to Anfield in the summer, even if his slow start up until this point is somewhat understandable.

Liverpool fans give mixed opinions on possible Telles move

Liverpool have been heavily mentioned in the transfer gossip columns, but most of the targets have been midfielders or goalkeepers.

According to Portuguese publication A Bola, the Reds have now turned their attention to Porto full-back Alex Telles, who moved to the club from Galatasaray in 2016.

[ad_pod ]

The report claims that a £35m release clause is in the Brazilian’s contract, and it is believed that Liverpool are considering triggering it.

Last season, Telles made 42 appearances in all competitions, and in that time he contributed with 13 assists and three goals.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”211761″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch The Most Controversial World Cup Ever”]

The former Gremio player has the ability to play as a full-back or push forward as a winger, which would give Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp a variety of options.

Andrew Robertson has made the left-back role his own, so Liverpool fans would not be happy to see the Scotsman ousted.

Given how impressive he has been, it is fair to suggest that Telles would be used as a winger if he arrived at Anfield this summer.

Liverpool fans have been tweeting their thoughts on the rumours.

Saints fans react with sadness as Gardos departs

Southampton have confirmed that their defender Florin Gardos, has returned to his native Romania for the remainder of the season.

The 29-year-old has experienced a torrid time as a Saints player, due to his persistent injuries. According to transfermarkt, the defender has missed 378 days through injury during his time on the South coast.

His career with the Saints started reasonably promisingly as he made 17 appearances during his first season, yet he has only managed to make a single appearance over the course of the past three seasons.

The club confirmed that he has returned to Romania by signing for Clubul Sportiv Universitatea Craiova on loan until the end of the season. Florin Gardos’ contract with Southampton expires at the end of the season. Thus, the 29-year-old defender has already played his last game for the club.

His new side are currently positioned in third place in Romania’s Liga 1. Here’s how the Southampton supporters reacted to his departure on Twitter…

Arsenal must strike while the iron is hot with this German ace

If the launch of Arsenal’s new Puma kit wasn’t enough to keep the fire burning following Alexis Sanchez’s signing announcement on Thursday night, the club can now welcome back three German World Cup winners in Mesut Ozil, Per Mertesacker and Lukas Podolski.

The positivity around the club has soared over the past few days, but it’s the world-wide rebranding that is notable. Arsenal are major players in the market and house one of Europe’s most gifted midfielders. Throw in the recently won FA Cup, and the club are an entirely different proposition for players around the globe. Arsenal needn’t solely rely on Arsene Wenger’s powers of convincing to potential signings.

But fresh off a fantastic weekend for the club, the new week has started with reports out of Spain that Sami Khedira is on his way to north London for a fee of £23 million from Real Madrid.

If ever there was a time for Wenger and the club to confirm their no-nonsense attitude to building a legitimate title challenging team, this is it. Sami Khedira may not have played in the final against Argentina due to injury, but there can be no mistaking his credentials as one of the Europe’s best box-to-box midfielders.

Real Madrid are notorious for undervaluing their players, no matter how good they are or can be. Khedira never received an extension to his first contract with the club, signed after the 2010 World Cup, in which the then-Stuttgart midfielder replaced injured captain Michael Ballack in the Germany squad. Even though Arsenal could in theory get away with paying less for the want-away Khedira – whose agent is reportedly uninterested in making contact with Real – £23 million, in today’s market, is a great price for one of the game’s leading midfielders.

And let’s do away with the nonsense that Khedira isn’t really what Arsenal need – he is. We may not be able to contain him in the description of defensive midfielder, but he does that and so much more. Neither Arturo Vidal nor Paul Pogba are out-and-out defensive midfielders, but they’d be warmly welcomed at the Emirates. It speaks of the modern footballer, with players taking on far more than one role in an ever-shifting tactical setup.

Khedira may not tick the right boxes for some Arsenal fans, but this is the type of player that helps you win titles. The German’s industry is fantastic, typifying the all-action midfielder. He’s a valuable asset to have in the dressing room too, part of the reason why Joachim Low held no reservation in selecting Khedira for his World Cup squad. Here’s the bonus: Khedira played very little football between November and the end of last season, but still had an excellent World Cup when selected.

The likelihood is Wenger sees a midfield partnership of Khedira and Aaron Ramsey, with both being similar players in their work rate and desire to get forward. Ramsey was a vital component of Arsenal’s game in the first half of last season, just as much defensively as in attack. Khedira could help take some of the weight off Ramsey, and while the German isn’t the free-scoring, creative dynamo the Welshman has become, he still charges forward with plenty of enthusiasm during games, without ever denting the responsibilities he has in his own half.

Khedira will allow Arsenal to effectively press opposition teams high up the pitch, as well as offering a much more notable presence in the midfield over Mikel Arteta, who, despite performing valiantly in the pivot role, doesn’t offer the strength many fans are clamouring for.

Let’s not forget that it wasn’t too long ago that Arsenal were said to be looking at players like Mohamed Diame to fill their defensive midfield requirements. Now they’re onto a World Cup winner who recently added the Champions League to his La Liga and Copa del Rey winner’s medals. This is the real deal for Arsenal, a world-class midfielder in the prime of his career with all the experience of having won major honours.

Even if Khedira can’t be labelled with the preferred tag, he would nevertheless represent another bold statement, both on and off the pitch.

Aston Villa boss to meet with owners

Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert insists he has a good relationship with owner Randy Lerner, ahead of the American’s visit to the Midlands.

Lambert and Lerner are set to meet next month following the disappointing start that Villa have had to the season and the manager believes he has the full backing of his boss.

The club have made their worst start to a season in 43 years and have just the one victory in the first nine games this season and the last time the club started the season off this badly they were relegated to Division Three.

Lerner is set to visit the Midlands in a fortnight, but Lambert has revealed that he is in constant contact with the American who has been very supportive of the team so far.

“The chairman has got the club at heart. I have a good relationship with him, which is mutual, and he will come over in a couple of weeks’ time.

“At the end of the day, you just keep going. Has he been really supportive? Yes. Honestly. I have a good relationship with him.”

Lambert is adamant his side will not be relegated this season and has faith in his players.
