Warner anchors Northern Districts' win

Northern Districts joined Auckland at the top of the points table after they comprehensively beat Canterbury by eight wickets at in Hamilton

ESPNcricinfo staff17-Dec-2010Northern Districts joined Auckland at the top of the points table after they comprehensively beat Canterbury by eight wickets at Seddon Park in Hamilton.Northern Districts won the toss and chose to field, after rain delayed the start of play and the match was reduced to 18 overs. It looked like James Marshall had made the correct decision when Robi Nicol, coming off a match-winning half-century against Otago, was dismissed by Graeme Aldrige in the second over. Canterbury were 37 for 3 at the end of six overs and looked in danger of collapsing cheaply. However, Ryan ten Doeschate combined with Shannan Stewart and Carl Anderson for handy partnerships of 44 and 38 to steady the innings. But once ten Doeschate was dismissed on 119, the Canterbury innings fell away and they could only reach 138 for 8.Opener Daniel Flynn blasted 45 off 19 balls to get Northern Districts’ chase off to a cracking start. Flynn and David Warner added 54 runs before Flynn was dismissed. South African import Herschelle Gibbs at No. 3, together with Warner, cemented Northern Districts’ win with a 79-run partnership. Warner was unbeaten on 52 as Northern Districts completed an easy victory in just under 14 overs.

Broad exorcises his Durban ghost

Stuart Broad can now remember Durban for the good times. His fourth-afternoon spell put England on course for their crushing innings-and-98-run victory

Andrew McGlashan in Durban31-Dec-2009Stuart Broad can now remember Durban for the good times. His fourth-afternoon spell of three wickets in 15 balls helped put England on course for their crushing innings-and-98-run victory and it was far cry from his previous experience on his ground. During the 2007 World Twenty20 he was clobbered for six sixes in an over by Yuvraj Singh and has been reminded about it many times since. Now, though, after ripping out Jacques Kallis, AB de Villiers and JP Duminy in a dramatic post-tea session there is a different Kingsmead story to talk about. “I made sure I bowled at the other end,” he said with a laugh. “It’s a very different format of the game – and I can’t remember what happened yesterday, let alone years ago.”But I’ve learned a lot since back then and I’m feeling confident with where my game is at the moment. It was nice to get six wickets in the game at a ground I didn’t have too many fond memories of. To have won one of the best Test matches abroad that I’ve been involved in will certainly diminish the memories I had left of that poor day.He also believes that such experiences have helped him develop on the world stage, although that may have been quite hard to see while Yuvraj was launching him towards the ocean. “I’ve always been a big believer that you learn most from your mistakes,” he added. “It was a pretty brutal way to be introduced to international cricket. I’m pleased the way I’ve reacted to failures in the past, and it’s up to me to keep doing that.”For a bowler who was on the verge of being dropped four Tests ago, Broad has made significant strides to now be a key part of England’s four-man attack. He has ended 2009 as the third-highest wicket-taker for the year with 47 wickets at 28.36, six behind his destroyer-in-arms, Graeme Swann. Still, if it hadn’t been for Andrew Flintoff’s omission at Headingley due to injury Broad would have been left out after a poor start to the Ashes series.Instead he took 6 for 91 – a flattering analysis as Australia romped to victory, but still career-best – and then there was his day in the sun at The Oval. What people really wanted to know, though, was could he do it again? His most recent spell provided the answer. In 15 balls he extracted three high-class batsmen as Kallis, de Villiers and Duminy each departed to a variety of leaves. Kallis’ was the most dramatic as the off-stump went cart-wheeling then de Villiers padded up and Duminy dragged on.Stuart Broad can treasure the memory of Jacques Kallis’s flying off stump from Kinsgmead•Getty Images

“It was pleasing to get Kallis with one that nipped back when the seam was wobbling,” he said. “One thing that helped me before this series was to watch a bit of footage on Shaun Pollock because he’s the sort of bowler I want to be like.”He seemed to get the ball to talk when the seam wasn’t exactly perfectly bolt upright, when it was just wobbling slightly. It just nipped either way, on the South African wickets. It was a very happy moment when I saw Kallis raising his arms – because I knew it was not missing the off-stump; I just felt like it was tailing back.”Broad’s development as a Test cricketer mirrors, in many ways, that of the team from an inconsistent performer capable of occasional glimpses of something special to a consistent threat on the world stage. People still point to an average the wrong side of thirty, but it’s on the way down and as batsman’s averages have climbed over the last decade so have bowler’s. Broad has been the only ever-present in the England attack this year, which shows a wise investment from the management and they are now getting the rewards.”I’m fortunate at my age to have experienced quite a lot of different conditions round the world,” he said. “We’re learning as a bowling unit that pressure is getting us wickets. We’re not necessarily bowling huge, reverse-swinging yorkers. It’s the pressure we’re building from both ends.””We’re improving all the time. It’s crucial that we don’t get carried away, though. It was a great lesson in the Ashes series in the Test where we could have won the Ashes but were terrible at Headingley. It just shows we shouldn’t look too far ahead. We’re always a better team when we’re talking about winning the next hour or the next session.”The shorter targets are really helping us as a team, and that’s something we’ll take into Cape Town. We’ve got a great opportunity over here in South Africa – one of the hardest places to come and win Test cricket – and that first hour at Newlands will be crucial, whether with bat or ball, that we strike the first blow.”

Broken thumb rules Douglas out of Qualifiers

Bermuda’s Chris Douglas has broken his left thumb during a warm-up match in South Africa and has been ruled out of the ICC World Cup Qualifiers which start next week. He will be replaced by allrounder Jacobi Robinson.Douglas underwent surgery for the injury which he sustained taking a low catch during Bermuda’s 71-run win over Northerns in Pretoria.Gus Logie, the coach, said he had been banking on Douglas being a key player as Bermuda bid to qualify for the 2011 World Cup. “Sometimes you make plans and then things go awry,” Logie told the Royal Gazette. “But that’s the way life goes and you just have to make other plans.”Chris is very disappointed because he really wanted to do well on this tour. But we can’t dwell on the past because this is now another opportunity for someone else to step up.”

Price tag put BCCI off ICC's anti-corruption cover

The Indian board’s commitment to fight corruption in cricket has come under the scanner after it has emerged that it stayed silent for months on an ICC offer to provide full anti-corruption cover for the IPL this year, mainly because of the fee involved

Ajay S Shankar30-Apr-2009The Indian board’s commitment to fight corruption in cricket has come under the scanner after it has emerged that it stayed silent for months on an ICC offer to provide full anti-corruption cover for the IPL this year, mainly because of the fee involved. The issue was raised at the BCCI’s working committee on Wednesday, when members were informed that the fee quoted then by the ICC – US$1.2 million – was too high. The BCCI, which runs the IPL, finally agreed to the offer this month when reminded about it during the ICC’s executive board meeting in Dubai. That was on April 17, the day before the IPL began, and it was too late for the ICC’s Anti Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) – which starts work on an event at least two months in advance – to provide a credible level of preventive cover. The BCCI’s position has raised a few eyebrows within the Indian board and officials who attended Wednesday’s high-level meeting told Cricinfo of their concern at a price being put to the fight against corruption – which, they feel, is an ever-present danger in cricket. To place the ACSU’s fee in perspective, the BCCI had declared an overall income of approximately US$ 200m for 2007-08, and a profit of US$ 10m from the first IPL alone.Shashank Manohar, the BCCI president, is a senior member of the ICC board, which has consistently maintained that corruption in cricket is a menace that demands the most stringent preventive measures possible. In fact, after the last ICC board meeting, Haroon Lorgat, the ICC chief executive, admitted there is a higher concern about Twenty20 cricket with all the excitement and money.”The board has consistently said it cannot afford to be complacent (about the risk of corruption in Twenty20 cricket),” Lorgat told Cricinfo last week. “We are mindful that with Twenty20 cricket there is great excitement and money. Put those ingredients into a pot and there is a higher concern.”Last July, after the first IPL, the ACSU chairman Sir Paul Condon told the ICC’s annual conference in Dubai that Twenty20 tournaments like the IPL bring with it the “biggest threat in terms of corruption in the game since the days of cricket in Sharjah.””But the BCCI’s position when it comes to the IPL is quite puzzling,” a state association official, who attended BCCI working committee meeting, told Cricinfo. It’s learnt that some officials pointed to the presence of individuals other than the players and support staff in the team dugouts last year and stressed the importance of utilising the ICC’s services to lend credibility to the tournament’s anti-corruption measures.N Srinivasan, the BCCI secretary, and Lalit Modi, the IPL chairman, were not available for comment.Officially, the BCCI is well within its rights to organise its own anti-corruption measures for the IPL, which is deemed a domestic event. “But it’s obvious, isn’t it, that the IPL is much more than just another domestic event?” another state association official, who attended the BCCI meeting, said. “There are nearly 80 foreign players involved from across the world along with Bollywood stars, their staff and supporters. No one is saying that there is corruption in the IPL; we are confident that there isn’t. But are they doing enough to keep it that way?”The IPL’s anti-corruption protocol last year was handled by a team of around 10 officials, including retired police and military officials, recruited independently by the league. The team was guided by ACSU officials, who played a supporting role. This time, the IPL’s team is being assisted by Nicholls & Steyn, the private security agency based in South Africa that has also been entrusted with the task of managing the event’s security. Bob Nicholls, one of the partners of the security firm, had told Cricinfo that they were “not involved so much” with the anti-corruption aspect. In contrast, the ICC’s ACSU is not a profit-based body and any income over expenses is pumped back into the game. The ICC had first offered full ACSU coverage for the second IPL edition a few months after the hugely successful inaugural event got over last May, based on independent observations and inputs collated during the tournament. The IPL agreed and were then sent a quote on the fee this would involve. The IPL, however, indicated that the fee was too high and said they would revert on the offer, which they didn’t till the ICC board meeting 12 days ago.The ACSU’s pre-event spadework involves staging reconnaissances in the host cities and gathering intelligence from local sources to identify potential corruptors. Against this background, the effectiveness of the IPL’s anti-corruption procedures this year is open to question after the tournament – involving 59 matches over 37 days, at eight venues – was shifted to South Africa just three weeks before its scheduled start in India. The ICC’s ACSU came into being after the match-fixing scandal of 2000 involving Hansie Cronje, which also led to bans on Mohammed Azharuddin, the former India captain, and Salim Malik, the Pakistan batsman.

Journalist drops exciting Haaland update

Taking to Twitter, Norwegian journalist and football expert Andreas Korssund has shared an exciting transfer development out of Manchester City.

The Lowdown: City eye striker move…

Over the summer, Manchester City and sporting director/transfer chief Txiki Begiristain appeared desperate to sign an out-and-out centre-forward as the club parted ways with club legend Sergio Aguero.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/man-city-latest-updates/” title=”Man City latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

City’s all-time top goal scorer bid an emotional farewell to Eastlands nearly a decade after he was signed from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2011.

Pep Guardiola clinched the 2020/2021 Premier League crown, a Carabao Cup and guided his side to a first ever Champions League final without the use of a natural striker.

That didn’t sway City’s attempts to sign one alongside the club record acquisition of Jack Grealish, however, as bids were lodged for Spurs attacker Harry Kane.

The Sky Blues couldn’t prise him away from N17 in the end and even briefly turned their attention to the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Dusan Vlahovic.

Erling Braut Haaland, a player many City supporters want to see at Eastlands, was also linked.

Now, another update has emerged on the Norwegian superstar.

The Latest: Journalist reveals exciting Haaland development…

As per Korssund, an exciting development has emerged involving City and the red hot Borussia Dortmund striker.

It is believed that ‘Manchester City are ready’ to sign the 21-year-old next summer and Begiristain is even ‘planning meetings’ with super agent Mino Raiola ‘already in January’ (Twitter).

Haaland’s well known €75 million (£63.8m) release clause becomes valid in June 2022 (Fabrizio Romano), presumably motivating City to get ahead of the competition and begin winter talks ahead of a swoop later in the year.

The Norway international is currently valued at around £117 million by Transfermarkt but City could bypass paying any nine-figure fee with the 2022 clause.

The Verdict: Get it done Txiki…

Out of all the out and out strikers linked with a move to the Etihad, Haaland stands out as, by some distance, the most exciting of them all.

The footballing world’s most sensational young forward and son of former Man City player Alf-Inge Haland, he racked up a head-turning 41 goals and 12 assists in all competitions over 2020/2021 (Transfermarkt).

A physical and aerial presence at 6 foot 4, something the Sky Blues have arguably been missing for quite some time going forward, he appears to be the perfect Man City signing.

Dourado vê especulações naturais e diz: 'Não chegou nada oficial a mim'

A procura é natural.

Aston Villa: Fans react to Premier League statement

A number of Aston Villa fans have been reacting to news shared by the Premier League in regards to the upcoming international break.

Villa announced on Monday that both Emiliano Buendia and Emiliano Martinez have been called up by Argentina for next month’s World Cup qualifiers.

Several Villa supporters weren’t impressed, as Argentina is currently on the UK Government’s red-list regarding travel to England, meaning a 10-day period of hotel isolation would be required for the pair before players can return to Villa.

However, Premier League clubs have now decided that they will not release players to represent their countries in red-list countries.

So, as it stands, it appears as if Buendia and Martinez will not be travelling next month and look set to remain in the Midlands.

Johnson faces challenge from Bollinger

Mitchell Johnson hopes to retain his spot in the Test attack throughout the tour © AFP

Mitchell Johnson is hoping reverse-swing can be his key weapon in India as he aims to hold his place in Australia’s Test team and fight off a challenge from Doug Bollinger. Johnson’s position is the least secure of Australia’s three starting fast men and he is not expecting any real help from the new ball during the four Tests.”I’ve sort of, not given up on the swing thing, but I think in these conditions I’m probably not going to get too many opportunities to swing the new ball anyway, so that’s when the reverse will come into it for me,” Johnson told AAP. “I had been working on basically trying to get it through to the keeper and bowl the way I have in the past.”Johnson had an excellent one-day tour of India this time last year but his Test appearances have been no more than solid. He struggled in the West Indies this year, where he sprayed deliveries both sides of the wicket, and he was stripped of the new-ball duties.”Looking at the West Indies tour I probably didn’t have the best tour there,” Johnson said. “But towards the end of it I started to get a bit more rhythm and where I was bowling there was coming in behind Brett [Lee] or Stuart [Clark] and just trying to bowl straight and hit the deck.”The persistent wicket-taking of Johnson’s fellow left-armer Bollinger will place Johnson under pressure during the upcoming series. Bollinger, an unused backup on the Caribbean trip, has impressed in his few games in India, both with Australia A and in the weekend’s practice match in Jaipur.”I like to bowl as straight as I can and I like to swing the ball as much as I can, whether it be natural or Irish,” Bollinger said. “That can be a very beneficial thing over here because the wickets don’t change as much and they’re a lot flatter than Australia.”

Wolves: Fans react to Lee Kang-in snub

Wolverhampton Wanderers have been snubbed by Valencia forward Lee Kang-in, according to a report from El Desmarque.

Valencia, who finished in 13th last season, need to sell the South Korean before they can register another non-EU player in the form of Brazilian forward Marcos Andre. However, he has now rebuffed the advances of four different clubs, including Wolves and Ligue 1 outfit AS Monaco.

He is apparently willing to run down the final year of his contract and leave on a free transfer next summer if no satisfactory proposal arrives.

The lowdown on Wolves target Lee Kang-in

Lee, who can operate as an attacking midfielder and on either flank, has made 62 appearances for Valencia, scoring just three times and providing four assists (via Transfermarkt).

The 20-year-old has earned six caps for South Korea, having made his senior debut in September 2019. He featured for his country at the Olympic Games earlier this summer and scored three times in Tokyo.

Fan feed Talking Wolves relayed the report about his Molineux snub, and here’s what some supporters made of it.
