Lancashire cling on in edge-of-the-seat battle

Like mariners clinging to wreckage in the hope of eventual rescue, Lancashire’s cricketers hoped to confound the logic of experience on the second day of this game

ScorecardSteven Croft sweeps past the wicketkeeper during his vital 60•Getty ImagesLike mariners clinging to wreckage in the hope of eventual rescue, Lancashire’s cricketers hoped to confound the logic of experience on the second day of this game. For over five months grimly inadequate first-innings totals had led to them escaping from some games with soggy, miserable draws or losing others when doughty rearguards had failed to compensate for collective errors. Another such display of incompetence and Old Trafford officials would be making block hotel bookings in Leicester, Derby and Bristol. Very pleasant places to pitch one’s tent, by Jove, but a swift return to the Division Two had been far from Lancastrian thoughts in green and carefree April.Middlesex, though, were also in danger and Wednesday’s play eventually became a game within a game as Glen Chapple’s batsmen, 3-1 ahead on bonus points at the start of play, sought to extend that margin to three before turning their minds, bodies and hearts to winning the match itself and overtaking Chris Rogers’ teamThe result was an utterly wonderful day’s cricket for partisans and neutrals alike, even though matters had not been resolved when the players left the field in the evening sunlight. After three sessions in which the two sides had scrapped unsparingly for the slightest advantage, Lancashire have a 45-run lead on first innings with four wickets in hand.Far more significantly, though, both teams had picked up two more points and Lancashire must now score 41 runs off 14 overs without losing three more wickets if they are to go into the second half of this game with their hopes of victory and survival intact. And, indeed, all this is pretty simple when set beside the situation just after tea when it was thought that Lancashire might declare on 250 for 5 and some wondered whether they would fall foul of the Declaration Monitor, who is not a bureaucratic ghoul from Kafka or Gogol, but an ECB worthy, in this case David Capel, dispatched to such September games as these to ensure that any closure is within the spirit of the game and not “extraordinary”.However, once the admirably pugnacious Steven Croft had been caught down the leg side for 60 to give the equally hard-working Toby Roland-Jones his third wicket of the day – the ball surely flicked only his clothes, by the way – the situation was simplified rather. Glen Chapple and Luke Procter’s unbroken seventh-wicket partnership of 38 has now left matters deliciously poised on the penultimate day of what has truly been a county season to live for.The morning’s play had offered Lancashire supporters slightly unexpected encouragement that their top order batting might be able to establish a first innings lead in traditional fashion without worrying overly about declarations. Although the home side lost Paul Horton, lbw for 7 when half forward to a very straight delivery from Tim Murtagh, Luis Reece and Ashwell Prince calmly added 76 to leave Lancashire reasonably placed on 88 for 1 at the break.Even in the first session, though, Middlesex’s bowlers had beaten the bat sufficiently often to encourage them that the blue skies and clear air had not made batting a completely straightforward exercise. The afternoon’s cricket proved the point much more clearly as an attack led very capably by Roland-Jones took four wickets while conceding only 77 runs.Reece, having made a technically competent 45, shaped a drive at a full-length Roland-Jones delivery but only edged the ball to Dawid Malan at second slip although it was mighty close to a no-ball. Four overs later the same bowler grabbed the vital wicket of Prince, who seemed to stop a drive yet only scooped the ball to Rogers at mid-on.Middlesex’s best period of the game was concluded when Karl Brown inside edged James Harris onto his stumps for 13, a sad end for a batsman who once timed the ball so well, yet now, in four-day cricket at least, sometimes gives one the impression that he is trying to bat when wearing someone else’s spectacles. Those three wickets left Lancashire on 118 for 4 and the gloom-mongers in the pavilion were probably doing a fair trade. But Jos Buttler added 42 with Croft before he was lbw to slow left- armer Ravi Patel for 23 and it was left to Procter and Croft, two veterans of another memorable September afternoon – Taunton 2011, “a date phrased like a vintage” – to add 61 for the sixth-wicket against a Middlesex attack astutely skippered by Rogers. As for the third morning, Lancashire will hope to establish as big a lead as possible without losing their ninth wicket inside 110 overs. Then, having seen Patel get a good measure of turn from the Old Trafford pitch, Simon Kerrigan and Croft will hope to exploit the widening cracks in the wicket to put their opponents under the sort of pressure they have rarely encountered.

BPL corruption verdict on February 26

The tribunal appointed to investigate allegations of match and spot-fixing in the 2013 Bangladesh Premier League will deliver its short judgment to the nine accused from February 26. The sanctions will be announced according to article six of the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s anti-corruption code.On February 27, the reasons for the sanctions will be read to the accused, and lawyers from both sides will be present on both days. The full hearing into the allegations had begun on January 19 and since then eight of the nine people charged had appeared before the three-man tribunal in Dhaka. Seven out of the nine were charged with match and spot-fixing, while two were charged for failing to report a corrupt approach.Kent allrounder Darren Stevens, who played in the BPL, had confirmed the ICC had charged him for not reporting an approach, while Mosharraf Hossain and Mahbubul Alam also admitted they were under investigation. The allegations came to light in May 2013, when BCB president Nazmul Hassan confirmed that a Bangladesh player had been questioned by the ICC. Ashraful was the first to admit of his involvement in corruption in June and that was followed by formal charges against nine individuals, including six Dhaka Gladiators’ players.

Taijul bowls North Zone to victory

North Zone trounced East Zone by seven wickets on the third day of their Bangladesh Cricket League match at the BKSP-2 ground in Savar

ESPNcricinfo staff20-Jan-2014North Zone trounced East Zone by seven wickets on the third day of their Bangladesh Cricket League match at the BKSP-2 ground in Savar. Taijul Islam, the left-arm spinner, turned the match around with his first ten-wicket haul in first-class cricket, earning him the Player-of-the-Match award.Taijul took seven first-innings wickets as East Zone were bowled out for 270 on the first day. On the third day, he picked up another five-wicket haul to help bowl out East Zone for 139 runs. It left North Zone to score162 with a day and a half to spare. Naeem Islam scored an unbeaten 69 alongside captain Mushfiqur Rahim who was also not out on 29.After East Zone made 270 with Mominul Haque top-scoring with 94, North Zone replied with 248 in their first innings. Farhad Reza and Suhrawadi Shuvo struck fifties to rescue the side after they were reduced to 99 for 6 on the second day. Nabil Samad took 6 for 69 for East Zone but they couldn’t capitalise on the 22-run first innings lead. Apart from Taijul’s 5 for 51, Subashis Roy took four wickets for North Zone.North Zone now lead the table with 30 points while East Zone are on second place with 15 points.

Van Zyl ton takes Cobras closer to play-offs

ScorecardFile photo: Stiaan van Zyl added 136 for the third wicket with Yaseen Vallie•Bangladesh Cricket Board

A century from Stiaan van Zyl, and his 136-run third-wicket stand with Yaseen Vallie helped Cape Cobras to a 26-run win over Knights in Cape Town. The win helped Cape Cobras retain their one-point lead over Dolphins at the top of the table and strengthened their chances of a top-three finish and a place in the play-offs.Van Zyl, who had struck 52 in the previous game against Lions, smashed 12 fours during his 144-ball 113, and was well-supported at the other end by Vallie, who contributed 58 off 91 balls. Vallie was bowled in the 46th over with the score at 211 for 3, but Justin Ontong, coming in at No.5, blasted four fours and a six as he raced to 24 off just 7 balls, to take Cobras to 262 for 5 in their 50 overs.Cobras began their defence strongly as well, as Justin Kemp and Shaheen Khan struck regularly to leave Knights precariously placed at 115 for 8.Restricting Knights to 209 or lesser would’ve earned Cobras a bonus point, but Dillon du Preez and Quinton Friend, resisted adding 108 for the ninth wicket. The last time the pair put on a substantial stand, against Dolphins on Wednesday, they won the game for Knights. However, they couldn’t replicate that success in this game. Du Preez was removed in the 45th over, and Shaheen bowled Friend out in the 46th to bundle the Knights out for 236.
ScorecardA 118-run contribution for the fourth wicket between Vaughn van Jaarsveld and Cody Chetty helped Dolphins chase down 237 against Titans, with seven balls remaining, to seal a five-wicket win and take them closer to the play-offs.The Dolphins opener Morne van Wyk had given the team a good start, powering his way to a 45-ball 47 with seven fours and a six. Titans fought back with three quick wickets to leave Dolphins at 65 for 3 in the 15th over, but Van Jaarsveld and Chetty counterattacked, adding 118 in 24.3 overs. Van Jaarsveld eventually departed in the 39th over for 65 off 73 balls, including six fours and a six. With 49 needed off the last 10 overs, Dolphins were comfortable but Chetty’s wicket in the 41st over brought Titans back.Khaya Zondo and Daryn Smith, however, eased the nerves, as their 49-run contribution for the sixth wicket took Dolphins home.Titans’ innings, was earlier propelled by a 60-ball 54 from Mangaliso Mosehle, after the captain Henry Davids and Farhaan Behardien had chipped in with 44 apiece. The defeat was a big blow for Titans, as it pushed them out of the top three. Titans, who are nine points behind Warriors, will have to win all three of their remaining games now to stand a chance of qualifying for the play-offs.The game between Warriors and Lions was abandoned without a ball being bowled, due to rain. Warriors, however, are well on course for a top-three finish. They are currently third on 20 points from seven games, behind Cape Cobras and Dolphins, but with an extra game in hand. The top team in the qualifies for the final, while the second and third-placed teams will play a semi-fina.

England return to scene of abandonment

England will return to the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua for the first time since their Test against West Indies in 2009 was abandoned after 10 balls due to a dangerous outfield consisting largely of sand.Alastair Cook, who opened the batting with Andrew Strauss in that match, will take his ODI team to West Indies for three ODIs beginning at the end of February all of which will be held at North Sound. Three Twenty20s then follow, which will be staged in Barbados, as preparation for the World Twenty20 in Bangladesh which is due to start in mid-March.The Sir Vivian Richards Stadium returned to the international scene in May 2010, 14 months after the abandonment involving England, after the outfield was relayed for a second time and has since held matches in all formats. The brief tour of the Caribbean is part of a period full of ODI and Twenty20 cricket for England in the early part of 2014 following the conclusion of the Ashes in Sydney in early January.

Shillingford's six-for sets up big Windies win

Shane Shillingford ran through a clueless line-up to take his best Test figures as Zimbabwe continued to bat like the Test irregulars they are

The Report by Abhishek Purohit14-Mar-2013

Shane Shillingford, on his international comeback, ran through a clueless line-up to take his best Test figures as Zimbabwe batted like the Test irregulars they are. West Indies needed just under two hours on the third morning to end the Zimbabwe second innings, although their win was delayed by the farce of a lunch break taken after three overs of their tiny chase. There would have been no need for West Indies to bat again, had Craig Ervine not been put down twice after a wicket each had gone down in the day’s first two overs. There was nothing in the Kensington Oval pitch or in the West Indies attack to justify Zimbabwe lasting only 41.4 overs. There was bounce and some turn for Shillingford alright, but only one of his six wickets, that of Graeme Cremer, was off a delivery that came close to being called unplayable. It was Zimbabwe’s inability to keep down testing, but pretty regular, deliveries that led to their downfall. But for a side that kept itself out of the Test arena for six years and was playing only its fifth Test since ending the exile in August 2011, ability to survive Test-quality bowling is hard to develop without exposure.Smart stats

Shane Shillingford’s 6 for 49 is the best performance by a West Indies bowler against Zimbabwe. It is also the third best performance by a spinner in Barbados.

Shillingford’s match haul of 9 for 107 is his second best in Tests. It is also the second best match figures by a West Indies spinner since 1990. The best also belongs to Shillingford.

West Indies’ nine-wicket win is their fifth in seven Tests against Zimbabwe. They have won each of the three home matches.

Zimbabwe’s total of 107 is their fourth lowest against West Indies. Three of the top four lowest totals have come in Tests played in West Indies.

West Indies have now won five Tests in a row. The last time they managed this was in 1988, when they won seven consecutive Tests.

That inability was evident in the number of batsmen, three in each innings, who fell to offspin in the leg trap. Few Test specialist batsmen would have fallen so easily. Brendan Taylor, the Zimbabwe captain, summed it up when he stepped out to Shillingford in the day’s first over, suddenly stopped and jabbed a length offbreak to forward short leg. It continued a horror tour for Taylor with scores of 8, 0 & 39 in the ODIs, 0 & 4 in the Twenty20s, 20 & 20 in the three-day tour match, and 26 & 6 in this Test.A few overs later, Malcolm Waller again exposed another area of weakness against spin. He waited deep in the crease as a Shillingford offbreak spun into his thigh pad, but failed to keep the bat out of the way, and got an inside edge to forward short leg.The next two wickets were earned by Shillingford. He bowled Regis Chakabva with a flighted straighter one as the batsman pushed forward expecting turn. Cremer got a brute that kicked and straightened from a good length to take the edge to the wicketkeeper. Shillingford was accurate throughout the match, and got considerable lift and, at times, sharp turn.Zimbabwe’s spineless showing with the bat, apart from the first session of the game, hid a few West Indies shortcomings. They were under danger of conceding the first-innings lead on day two, before their captain Darren Sammy bailed them out with a match-turning knock from No. 8. They dropped a few catches, including Ervine twice this morning, once by Chris Gayle off Shillingford at slip and once by Darren Bravo at third slip off Tino Best.Shannon Gabriel ended the innings with two wickets in three balls, leaving Ervine stranded. Kieran Powell had his second failure of the match as he stabbed a Tendai Chatara lifter to gully. When Chris Gayle scored the winning runs, it was the first time since 1988 that West Indies had won five successive Tests. The opposition back then during a seven-match streak were England and Australia; three of the current five wins have come against Bangladesh and Zimbabwe.

I had no involvement in captaincy change – McCullum

Brendon McCullum has said he is concerned for his predecessor as well as the team as it tries to pull itself together ahead of a tough tour of South Africa

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Dec-2012

I was asked if I would lead the one-day and Twenty20 teams two days ago, and then yesterday I was asked if I would lead the Test team, after Ross turned it down so about as much involvement I’ve had in this situation

Brendon McCullum, who took over as New Zealand captain under controversial circumstances after Ross Taylor refused an offer to remain as the leader of the Test team in a split-captaincy scenario, has said he is concerned for his predecessor as well as the team ahead of a tough tour of South Africa. Taylor has asked for a break and will not be travelling to South Africa.”I’m more concerned now with how the team is handling the situation and where we go from here – how we try and galvanise the unit, rather than my own individual accolade of picking up the captaincy,” McCullum told reporters at a press conference in Lincoln. “I’m obviously worried for Ross and how he is dealing with things at the moment, and obviously how we try and ensure that we pull together this team inside a very short space of time for what is going to be an incredibly tough tour.”McCullum said he had been in touch with Taylor, who said on Friday he felt he never had the support of New Zealand coach Mike Hesson. “I’ve spoken to him a couple of times – two days ago and then left a message with him again this morning – but he obviously needs a little bit of space at the moment as well, and I thought he did a really good job yesterday with the media of being able to deal with some tough circumstances,” McCullum said. “Ross is an integral member of this team and he’s vitally important to us in terms of how we’re going to try and increase our performances. He’s also a very popular member of the team as well and there’s a lot of guys that will be feeling for him at the moment – we will welcome him back when he’s good and ready.”I know it hasn’t been a great process with the way it’s unfolded and I know there is a lot of anger towards it.”I guess from our point of view, we now need to try and move forward and get some faith back into this team and build some rapport with the public because that’s obviously taken a hit over the last seven days.”McCullum was upset at speculation that he may have had a role to play in the entire episode. “That’s probably the thing that has come out through this week that’s annoyed me the most. I guess that cuts right to the bone that someone would question your integrity and your character like that.”I guess it’s been mentioned on a number of occasions and to be totally honest, it is highly insulting, for people to cast aspersions when they certainly don’t know the full circumstances.”From my point of view, I had absolutely no involvement in that recommendation whatsoever. I was asked if I would lead the one-day and Twenty20 teams two days ago, and then yesterday I was asked if I would lead the Test team, after Ross turned it down so about as much involvement I’ve had in this situation.”Relations between Taylor and himself, McCullum said, were very good. “It’s only really been media hype and fiction over the last 16 months, since the captaincy selection of Ross, which tried to drive a wedge between Ross and I.”In terms of the public profile, we’ve got a very good and respectful relationship. We know each other, we’ve played with each other for a very long time and we know each others families.”McCullum hoped to welcome Taylor back to the New Zealand side and sympathised with Taylor for the situation he finds himself in. “I don’t want to sit here and talk about how hard it’s been on me, because it’s certainly been a lot harder on other people, but you know that as long as, through your dealings, that you are honest and you maintain your integrity throughout, then you can look yourself in the eye and know that you’re doing the right thing.”Now Ross is going through some tough times and my thoughts are with him.”When he is good and ready to come back, then we’ll certainly welcome him back, and I’ll be looking to help him as much as I possibly can to reach the standards he wants to reach in this game, to be an integral member of this team and play a vital part in that.”
