Entrega?

Moeen v Rashid England's only selection dilemma

There will be no shock selections in England’s squad for the first Investec Ashes Test to be named at Lord’s on Wednesday

George Dobell30-Jun-20154:11

Great Ashes Moments – Jimmy and Monty save England at Cardiff 2009

There will be no shock selections – no Ashton Agar or Darren Pattinson – in England’s squad for the first Investec Ashes Test to be named at Lord’s on Wednesday. While the arrival of a new coach might provide a wildcard element to the process, it would be brave to the point of insanity if Trevor Bayliss started his new role by making dramatic changes to an England side that have won five and lost two of their last eight Tests. Especially as he has spent most of his first few days of the job in Spain. In truth, selection for the first Test is probably as predictable as at any time since Andy Flower was coach. Mark Wood has earned the right to go into the series as first-change seamer and Adam Lyth will open the batting. Gary Ballance will not be dropped after a couple of modest games and a couple of excellent deliveries. The only issue open to any sort of debate is the position of the spinner. While it seems highly likely that Moeen Ali will play in Cardiff, it is quite possible that Adil Rashid, the Yorkshire legspinner, will be included in the squad with a view to Bayliss taking a look at him in training and for him to gain more familiarity with the Test squad.Probable England squad

Alastair Cook (capt), Adam Lyth, Gary Ballance, Ian Bell, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler (wk), Moeen Ali, Stuart Broad, Mark Wood, James Anderson, Adil Rashid, Liam Plunkett/Mark Footitt

The attraction of Rashid is not just his bowling. It is what he represents. While offspinners appear – rightly or wrongly – to be associated with attrition, control and safety, legspinners evoke attack, positivity and aggression. Rashid’s selection may well reflect the public appetite to attack. But it remains likely that the selectors will keep faith with Moeen. While he did not enjoy a good Caribbean tour – he was a late addition to the squad due to injury and looked rusty throughout – his bowling in last summer’s victory over India was exactly what England required. He combined control with an element of threat, gaining sharp dip and demonstrating an arm-ball that was not so different to Graeme Swann’s. If he bowls as well this summer, he will be fine. If he bowls as he did in the Caribbean, he will be dropped.Rashid, by comparison, is significantly slower through the air and has not, to this point in his career, offered the same levels of consistency. He will turn the ball both ways, even in the first innings, and he may prove dangerous for tailenders, in particular. But the concern – and it is a reasonable concern – is that, with a four-man seam attack containing two fairly inexperienced and potentially expensive fast bowlers, it will be important for the spinner to maintain some control and bowl some tight overs in unhelpful conditions. In order to do that, he will require assistance from his captain. Alastair Cook has many positive qualities but he has yet to demonstrate a huge amount of imagination in the field. Rashid’s inclusion would represent quite a challenge for him.Rashid’s exposure to the England squad over the winter appears to have been helpful, however. He is bowling with just a little more pace and is conceding almost an identical number of runs per over as Moeen this season. He was one of the successes of the ODI series against New Zealand and is certainly a viable option. If his Test debut does not come this summer, it surely will in the UAE against Pakistan later this year.Adil Rashid could come into contention for the Cardiff Test after impressing in the ODIs against New Zealand•Getty Images

Despite the much-repeated myth that Moeen is a “part-time” bowler, it is not so. Since the start of the 2012 season, he has bowled more deliveries in first-class cricket than Rashid or even a county stalwart such as Gareth Batty. His bowling average in that time is also better than Rashid’s. Even this season, Moeen has bowled more overs in first-class cricket than Rashid and his record in Test cricket this year – 11 wickets in four Tests at an average of 41.63 – is not quite as grim as some might suggest.Could both play? It seems unlikely. Despite the warm weather and the fact that England picked both Monty Panesar and Graeme Swann for the Cardiff Test of 2009, it is more likely that England will rely on Joe Root and perhaps Lyth for additional overs if required. There is a distant possibility of omitting Ballance to accommodate both spinners but it would be a major surprise. It is 30 years since England picked two spinners in a home Test and won.Jonny Bairstow, plundering runs in all formats, can count himself unlucky if, as expected, he does not make the squad. But he is making a strong case as a batsman, averaging 106.00 in the Championship this year, and has probably moved to the position of first reserve ahead of James Taylor, Alex Hales or Eoin Morgan. The reserve bowlers, the likes of Liam Plunkett and Mark Footitt, will have to wait, too. While England will hope to play James Anderson and Stuart Broad in all five Tests, it seems Wood may require rotating. The presence of the allrounder, Ben Stokes, should ease the burden a little but Wood’s unique selling point – his explosive quality – needs to be preserved. Footitt, with his pace and his swing harnessed by the coaching of Graeme Welch, could yet prove to be the most influential left-arm pace bowler in the series. It would be quite a story.

Full text of BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur’s letter in response to claims of his being in contact with an alleged bookie

ESPNcricinfo staff27-Apr-2015Dear Mr Srinivasan,The BCCI has received intimation from the ICC ostensibly under your direction that I should keep away from one Mr Karan Gilhotra who is a ‘suspected bookie.’ The intimation further states that the information is unverified. I have earlier been the joint secretary of the BCCI under your president-ship and I am now secretary, BCCI. I only wish that you had shared the list of ‘unverified suspected bookies’ with me and other colleagues so that we could identify such persons and keep away from them. I have known this person who has been active in the political and cricketing activities in Punjab and adjacent states. I had no knowledge or any clue about his ‘activities as a suspected bookie.’It is curious that intimation about my having known this ‘suspected bookie’ was brought to the ICC notice by your friend Mr Neeraj Gundhe. Mr Neeraj Gunde incidentally is circulating to the media in Delhi the details of documents against your critics in the BCCI. He operates on your behalf. A procured complaint and an ICC advisory based on ‘unverified information’ was issued at your behest on the eve of the BCCI working committee meeting. It was intended to be a counter offensive on your behalf, since you have not reconciled with my election as secretary, BCCI. I would request at least now share with me or other colleagues in BCCI the list of suspected bookies in India, so that we may keep away from them. You may also share this information with your family members, whose involvement in betting has been proved.Since the ICC advisory to me had been made in public, I would be making this letter to you public. With regards,Yours sincerely,Anurag Thakur

Starc takes another step on Johnson's road

Apart from their first names and left-handedness, Mitchell Starc and Mitchell Johnson share something else in common – their own batsmen hate the thought of facing up to them in the nets

Daniel Brettig in Sydney05-Jan-20156:40

Bevan: Selectors got it a little wrong by rotating Starc

Apart from their first names and left-handedness, Mitchell Starc and Mitchell Johnson share something else in common – their own batsmen hate the thought of facing up to them in the nets.Johnson’s speed and awkward bounce are well known, but Starc’s attributes are exceedingly similar. He bowls at his very fastest in practice, curving the new ball late and into the stumps when he’s not banging in bouncers that threaten arms, gloves and heads at around 150kph. At the SCG the time around, one bending, piercing yorker spreadeagled Brad Haddin’s stumps in the most comprehensive manner imaginable, while a bumper left Shane Watson losing his footing as he lurched late underneath it.The difference between the two is that while Johnson has learned how to take this sort of terrifying stuff from the nets to the middle, Starc is still battling to find a way of doing so. His Test match appearances to date have been fleetingly brilliant but more commonly muted.A five-wicket haul against South Africa at the WACA Ground in November 2012 came at a cost – 6 for 154 from 28.5 overs, most of Starc’s wickets collected after Graeme Smith and Hashim Amla had rushed the game away from Australia by dominating him. As bowling analyses go, it was more Pyrrhic than perfect. As with all of Starc’s Test match appearances since Johnson re-emerged as a bowler reborn at the start of last summer, that WACA match was played alongside his more experienced fellow lefty. Without the new ball or a clear role as a strike bowler, Starc has given the appearance of a singer forgetting the words to a familiar tune. Not only has Starc’s bowling slipped from the standards glimpsed in the nets or limited overs formats, but his body language has also taken on the apologetic, slightly lost air of the late ring-in at a house party.”It’s interesting,” Chris Rogers said of a bowler he is happy to avoid in training. “He is a strike bowler, so hopefully he could take up that mantle that Johno has and maybe in previous games when they’ve played together it’s been a bit of a difficult thing for Starcy because he hasn’t quite known what his role has been. So if he does get that opportunity he will know exactly what he needs to do.”Mitchell Starc has a chance to stand out in the absence of Mitchell Johnson•Getty Images

Shane Warne’s words about Starc at the Gabba were harsh, but spoke of an issue that has not been anywhere near as prevalent when he has been able to lead an attack, new ball in hand. In ODIs Starc has often been irresistible, most notably on a warm day at the WACA later in the same summer as that South Africa Test. Bending the new ball treacherously late, he upended the West Indies in a manner that left plenty wondering who could possibly have kept him out that day.Steven Smith was very much a fringe dweller back then, not part of the squad and yet to make the leap from promise to fulfilment that has vaulted him into the Australian captaincy only a year after he did not make the initial list of Cricket Australia contracts. He has seen plenty of Starc, and reasons that a home Test and a strike bowler’s commission could yet bring out his best.”I’m sure he’s looking forward to playing out here in front of the SCG,” Smith said. “Having one left-hander is good for us. The way we’ve seen Mitch go back and play in the Big Bash he’s looked like he bowled exceptionally quick. We’re looking forward to hopefully some of the same that he’s produced in the BBL this week. I think if he sustains that for long periods, if he can keep that kind of pace up and sustain it for the long day he can be an extremely amazing bowler.”On match eve Smith had not yet decided whether he would grant Starc the chance to use the new ball. But it is reasonable to conclude that his best chance to succeed will be to take the shiny Kookaburra on a humid Sydney morning and charge into the wicket as fast as he can, his mind clear of questions about how he should work with other bowlers and how his action is grooved. That way he will be closer in mindset and attitude to the Starc seen in the nets, the BBL and the ODI team.Above all, it should not be forgotten that Starc’s current issues mirror those that were faced and beaten by Johnson himself. For some years, observers wondered why Johnson was persisted with when he looked about as sure of his bowling as doubtful spectators did. But time, and self-knowledge brought him to the realisation of enormous potential, helped by the belief of selectors and coaches who identified him. Starc is on that same journey, and this week will make another important step towards his destination from net bowling terror to Test match tormentor.

No Avaí a situação é grave.

BCB reduces Shakib suspension

The Bangladesh Cricket Board has reduced Shakib Al Hasan’s six-month suspension by three-and-a-half months.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board has reduced Shakib Al Hasan’s six-month suspension by three-and-a-half months, allowing him to be available for selection from September 15. However, the BCB’s ban on No Objection Certificates, required for Shakib to participate in overseas leagues, will remain in place until the end of 2015.The reduction in his suspension means that Shakib will be available for selection for the home series against Zimbabwe. He will not join the team in the West Indies, however, as the final Test of the tour begins on September 13 in St Lucia.Shakib was suspended on July 7 for what the board considered “serious misbehaviour” with Bangladesh’s new coach, Chandika Hathurusingha, and for his altercation with a spectator during a recent ODI against India. He appealed two weeks later and apologised publicly after submitting a letter to the board. At the start of August, Shakib was allowed to train at the Shere Bangla National Stadium. Nazmul Hassan, the BCB president, said the board had taken the decision to reduce the suspension after it was satisfied by the allrounder’s recent behaviour.”After taking everything under consideration, we have decided in today’s meeting that his suspension will be lifted on September 15,” Hassan said, after a four hour-long meeting at the board headquarters. “This means he will be available for selection. The board would not decide where he will play, the selectors and operations committee are there to select him. He will be available for international and domestic cricket.”It is not easy to take such a decision and then come out of it. But, as a contracted player, he had a right to appeal and he did. We were satisfied with the letter and his recent behaviour from individual interactions. We feel he has learned from his mistake and he has assured us a number of times that he won’t make such a mistake again.”Hassan also said the board could consider lifting the ban on NOCs if Shakib’s behaviour improves on and off the field.”The decision to keep him suspended from playing abroad [in domestic leagues] still stands,” Hassan said. “We will observe him on and off the field. If we see he has improved, the board may then decide to relax the other things.”Hassan also said that Shakib would be in the player pool for the Dhaka Premier League 2014-15 but stated the details would also rest with the tournament organisers, CCDM.”He is a [national] pool player. There are a few decisions to be taken, which will be in CCDM’s authority. They will let us know. They will take legal advice, but he will be allowed to play,” he said. When asked if the decision to reduce Shakib’s suspension was due to Bangladesh’s recent performances, Hassan simply said: “No.”

Renegades seamers seal 57-run win

A barrage of brutal hitting from Aaron Finch, Jos Buttler and Ben Rohrer helped the Melbourne Renegades romp to a 57-run victory over the Brisbane Heat

The Report by Alex Malcolm30-Dec-2013
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsA barrage of brutal hitting from Aaron Finch, Jos Buttler and Ben Rohrer helped the Melbourne Renegades romp to a 57-run victory over the Brisbane Heat in the Big Bash League. With England 4-0 down in the Ashes series, Buttler’s 61 from 36 balls was a rare sighting in Australia of an England player middling the ball and smiling broadly.Aaron Finch set up the Melbourne Renegades with his 51-ball 81•Getty ImagesIn the city where England threw away a dominant position to lose the fourth Test at the MCG, Buttler pronounced that the future is not unmitigated gloom for England.Buttler is expected to keep wicket for England in the forthcoming one-day series against Australia. Although England have ambitions for him to develop into a Test batsman, his all-round skills were not enough to dislodge the much-maligned Jonny Bairstow as reserve wicketkeeper in England’s Ashes squad.Heat, the defending champions were never really in the hunt as the Renegades trio thumped 11 fours and 11 sixes between them on their way to posting 3 for 210 after winning the toss.Finch was unsure of the quality of the dry drop-in surface at Etihad Stadium when the coin fell his way, but he and Buttler made batting look easy after taking their time to settle. The pair came together at the fall of Alex Doolan in the fifth over and showed opposing stand-in captain, Daniel Vettori, immense respect by nudging just nine runs from his first two overs as the total crawled to 1 for 53 after eight overs. The introduction of Nathan Hauritz saw Finch flick the switch. He slog swept the off-spinner for consecutive sixes to kick-start a tit-for-tat hitting competition between the two T20 internationals.Hauritz did not bowl again as Buttler and Finch combined for 108 runs off just 64 balls. The powerful right-handers clubbed Cameron Gannon, Daniel Christian and Ben Cutting to all corners of the stadium.Vettori was forced to bring himself back earlier than expected to remove Buttler in his 16th over. Peter Forrest held a fluky one-handed catch after misjudging a powerfully struck drive to wide long off to end an entertaining innings from the Englishman. But with Vettori bowled out, Finch and Ben Rohrer lifted to another gear. Finch drilled three boundaries through the offside in the following over before slicing a catch off Christian to fall 19 runs short of his third T20 hundred.Rohrer then smashed 36 runs in 11 deliveries to take the total beyond 200. The left-hander got some help from Alister McDermott, who bowled two full toss no-balls above waist-height, with both of them clearing the rope comfortably. McDermott was not allowed to complete his over, with Cutting being thrown the ball, but the right-armer only proceeded to dish up another full toss that Rohrer thumped into the crowd. The Heat’s chase never really got going. James Pattinson bowled a lively opening spell in his comeback following stress fractures. The Renegades quick forced a leading edge from Craig Kieswetter in the fourth over to start the rot.Luke Pomersbach laboured to 21 from 30 balls when Aaron O’Brien ended his torturous stay. There was no way back for the Heat as O’Brien, Muttiah Muralitharan and Nathan Rimmington strangled the middle order.Five sweetly struck sixes from Cutting ensured the scoreboard remained respectable, but he fell to one of several high-class outfield catches, which along with the two run outs, backed up the excellent bowling performance.

Madsen extends Derbyshire contract

Derbyshire’s captain and leading batsman Wayne Madsen has signed a contract extension that will keep him at the club for another three years

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Nov-2013Derbyshire have received a fillip ahead of their return to Division Two of the Championship next season with the news that captain and leading batsman Wayne Madsen has signed a contract extension that will keep him at the club for another three years.Madsen had attracted interest from other counties after finishing the 2013 season as the second leading run-scorer in Division One, despite Derbyshire’s relegation. He was the first batsman to pass 1000 runs in the Championship and ended the season with a clutch of awards, including the Cricket Writers’ Club County Player of the Year and the inaugural CMJ Spirit of Cricket Award. The 29-year-old, who was born in South Africa, has been with Derbyshire since 2009. He led them to promotion and the Division Two title in his first season as captain and almost marshalled an unlikely escape this year, as Derbyshire went into the final round with hopes of survival intact.”I’m proud to have signed a new contract with Derbyshire,” Madsen said. “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my five years here so far. It’s a fantastic club with great ambition. We’ve taken great strides over the past couple of seasons and I believe we can continue to make progress and hopefully compete for titles on all fronts.”Derbyshire have had to tighten their belts since relegation was confirmed, with Dave Houghton leaving his post as batting consultant, but they have retained pace bowler Mark Footitt, while overseas player Shivnarine Chanderpaul will return for the second year of his contract in 2014. Former Nottinghamshire batsman Scott Elstone has also joined, while Ben Slater has been offered a one-year deal after initially being told the club could not afford to.Madsen was under contract until 2015 but Derbyshire’s head coach, Karl Krikken, was understandably pleased to have secured a further commitment.”Wayne enjoyed a magnificent campaign last season and we’re delighted to have him here for the foreseeable future,” Krikken said. “As well as tremendous performances with the bat, Wayne led the side really well as we tackled Division One for the first time. To be the first player to 1000 runs, plus all the other accolades, was a real bonus to Wayne and the club.”Other clubs wanted him, of course they did, but it’s important to keep hold of our top players if we want to push to win trophies. I’m delighted we’ve been able to do this with Wayne.”
