India under pressure amid pitch spin

The Big Picture

It has been a strange old few days between Test matches. Much of the talk has been about an 83-year-old groundsman and the 22 yards he is in charge of. MS Dhoni wants another pitch with spin and bounce – qualities that brought his side’s downfall in Mumbai – and predictions for the surface have seemingly covered all bases. England, meanwhile, have sat back, enjoyed a few days off in Mumbai, done some charity work and worked hard in getting a key fast bowler fit.The two results in this series – India’s nine-wicket win and England’s ten-wicket success – were of such convincing margins in opposite directions that it makes it difficult to really know where each team sits against each other. Yet such was the turnaround performed by England last week that the prospect of a first series win in India since 1984-85 is now a realistic ambition.A link between the two results is that they have been achieved with a small collection of outstanding performances. In Ahmedabad it was largely Virender Sehwag, Cheteshwar Pujara and Pragyan Ojha. In Mumbai the matchwinners were Alastair Cook, Kevin Pietersen, Monty Panesar and Graeme Swann. While some individuals have been outstanding, both teams have also carried a number of players. For England, pressure will be on the Warwickshire pair of Jonathan Trott and Ian Bell (should the latter return) to supplement Cook and Pietersen. Then, of course, there is Sachin Tendulkar. Nobody really knows what he is thinking about the future – it is all rumour and hearsay – but the bottom line is that he has averaged 22.83 this year. It’s an intriguing subplot in a fascinating series.

Watch out for…

Virat Kohli is the latest golden boy of Indian cricket. His form over the last 12 months has been outstanding, but after two lean Tests it will be interesting to see how he responds. While there was not much he could do about the ripper from Graeme Swann that dismissed him in the first Test, he played two poor shots in Mumbai, the second a horrid, inexplicable, miscuing of a full toss to mid-off. There is no doubting his talent; he will score thousands of runs, but right now perhaps he needs a little more circumspection.
So far in this series the only sign of proper pace bowling has been from Umesh Yadav who is now injured. Steven Finn is more than capable of matching him and if, as seems likely, he is recalled he will also have three weeks of pent-up frustration to unleash. That can be a double-edged sword, though, and as part of a two-man pace attack he will have to ensure he does not spray the ball around. Still, if there is any bounce in the pitch Finn will be able to find it.

Team news

There are a couple of issues in the India camp. Harbhajan Singh is suffering from flu and did not train on Tuesday, but the likelihood was a return to two quicks so it should be a straight swap for Ishant Sharma. Yuvraj Singh took a blow on the hand during training, but the early indications were that it was not too serious. There has been debate about his place in the side, however with a return to two frontline quicks and two frontline spinners, Yuvraj’s part-time option could be useful.
India (probable) 1 Gautam Gambhir, 2 Virender Sehwag, 3 Cheteshwar Pujara, 4 Sachin Tendulkar, 5 Virat Kohli, 6 Yuvraj Singh, 7 MS Dhoni (capt. & wk), 8 R Ashwin, 9 Zaheer Khan, 10 Ishant Sharma, 11 Pragyan OjhaThere are two changes likely for England despite victory in Mumbai. Finn is fully recovered from his thigh strain, and all indications are that he will replace the struggling Stuart Broad as the visitors attempt to spice up their pace attack. Bell, meanwhile, has returned from paternity leave, and is likely to replace Jonny Bairstow although there is a chance both could play and Samit Patel miss out.England (probable) 1 Alastair Cook (capt.), 2 Nick Compton, 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Kevin Pietersen, 5 Ian Bell, 6 Samit Patel/Jonny Bairstow, 7 Matt Prior (wk), 8 Graeme Swann, 9 James Anderson, 10 Steven Finn, 11 Monty Panesar

Pitch and conditions

The pitches have filled plenty of column inches in this series. The only certainty seems to be that it remains 22 yards long. “I don’t think there will be much help for the spinners initially,” Dhoni said. Perhaps more significantly is the location of this match. Kolkata is much further east and the daylight hours are short. Play will start at 9am, and both teams have agreed to use floodlights if needed although the forecast is for plenty of sunshine.

Stats and trivia

  • If Stuart Broad does miss out it will be first time he has been left out for tactical reasons (as opposed to injury or rotation) since the Chennai Test in 2008-09
  • In their last three Tests at Eden Gardens, India have declared their first innings at scores of 631 for 7, 643 for 6 and 616 for 5.
  • India and England have played nine times at the venue. England have won once, in 1977, while the most recent contest in 1993 was an eight-wicket win for India where England’s leading wicket-taker was Graeme Hick.

Quotes

“We should still stick to turning tracks. That’s what our strength is. That’s what home advantage means. It’s not like when Australia play in Australia or when England play in England, they win all the games. Still they stick to the kind of speciality they have got. It’s the same for subcontinental teams.”
MS Dhoni sticks to a familiar theme
“It’s disappointing he’s missed two games, but it’s great that he’s back and we’ve got some tough selection meetings ahead of us. But as a captain and as a coach, that’s what you want. You want people pushing for places.”

Rob Nicol and James Fuller were the stars of the show as Gloucestershire boosted their hopes of making the Clydesdale Bank 40 semi-finals with a comprehensive victory over high-flying Group A rivals Netherlands in Amstelveen.New Zealander Nicol scored a brilliant 133 with seven fours and seven sixes as Gloucestershire ran up an imposing 290 for 6 batting first, with his countryman and opening partner Hamish Marshall contributing 47 while Fuller added a quickfire 40 late on.Fuller, who conceded 38 off one over as Gloucestershire lost their Friends Life t20 quarter-final to Sussex on Tuesday, then shone with the ball, taking 6 for 35 off his six overs as Holland were bowled out for 146 in the 22nd over. A rain interruption had seen Netherlands’s victory target changed to 237 off 28 overs, but they never seriously threatened and ended up losing by 90 runs.Tom Cooper top-scored for the Dutch with 51 but he was part of a major Netherlands collapse which saw the home side lose their last eight wickets for 43 runs in under eight overs.Gloucestershire’s victory sees them join second-placed Netherlands on 11 points in Group A, one point behind leaders Middlesex but with the Westcountry side having played a game less than both their rivals. Lancashire are fourth in the group on 10 points but with two games still in hand on Gloucestershire, who they meet at Old Trafford on Monday.

Barker commits to Warwickshire

Warwickshire’s all-rounder Keith Barker, whose early season championship form attracted attention, has signed a new three-year contract extension to remain at Edgbaston.

ESPNcricinfo staff26-Jun-2012Warwickshire’s all-rounder Keith Barker, whose early season championship form attracted the attention of a number of potential suitors, has signed a new three-year contract extension to remain at Edgbaston until at least the end of the 2015 season.Barker, 25, joined Warwickshire in 2008 after graduating from the football academy of Blackburn Rovers and made his first-class debut against Nottinghamshire at Edgbaston a year later. Since then he has taken 156 wickets in all competitions for Warwickshire and scored more than 1300 runs.In seven matches in this season’s County Championship, Barker has taken 32 wickets, including his first five-wicket haul in the competition against Lancashire in Liverpool, and his first 10-wicket match against Durham at Edgbaston.Ashley Giles, Warwickshire’s director of cricket, said: “It’s great news for the club that Keith has committed for another three years. He’s worked incredibly hard and shown great commitment to improving his game in his training with Graeme Welch over the last two years.”The team have certainly reaped the rewards for his efforts, particularly in the LV County Championship. He’s matured as a cricketer and has taken great confidence out of leading the attack with Chris Wright in the early part of the season. Everyone is delighted he is remaining at the club.”

Big PictureA series that comes down to its final match is always one worth watching but that is not the only thing that makes the battle between South Africa and New Zealand so compelling. In between both sides handing out comprehensive beatings to each other, with South Africa’s perhaps the more comprehensive of the two, the smaller battles have made for entertaining viewing. Will Tim Southee decide to say anything to Richard Levi again? Is Kyle Mills still trying to find the magic words he uttered in the World Cup quarterfinal 11 months ago to rile South Africa up? Has Morne Morkel got the mean streak needed to repeat his threat about the short ball to Martin Guptill? The answers to these questions will reveal which team has the mettle to win what is effectively a final. For South Africa, the must-win condition could mean much more, given their history in pressure situations. After the emphatic statement Levi allowed them to make in the previous match it would seem as though they are up for it, but will need more from some of the other members of the XI.New Zealand’s seven-match winning streak was broken by Levi and after dominating their home summer against Zimbabwe, this match will be vital in setting the tone for the upcoming challenge in the longer formats against South Africa. The Hamilton match exposed some of their weaknesses, which they will hope to fix with the inclusion of Jesse Ryder and a more committed bowling effort. They will also be honouring the victims of the Canterbury earthquake, which took place a year ago, giving them a sentimental reason to want to do well.Whoever wins the series will move to No. 2 on the ICC Twenty20 rankings, something both teams have admitted does not mean much to them. What victory will do is start their preparations for the World Twenty20 in September on a positive note. Form guideNew Zealand LWWWW (most recent first)
South Africa WLWLLPlayers to watch … He has not played for New Zealand since sustaining a calf injury after the famous Test win in Hobart, but now Jesse Ryder is back. Having watched Richard Levi’s hundred against his countrymen, he will be glad he is. Known for his fearless and forceful approach to batting, Ryder will look to beef up a New Zealand line-up that has appeared thin after the top three. He has also lost, according to him, 3.5 kilograms (although local media say it looks closer to 10) and will want to show off his fitter physique.Albie Morkel was spoken about as the missing piece in South Africa’s 2011 World Cup middle-order, which collapsed under pressure against New Zealand. Now, back in the setup, Morkel has a chance to test this theory. He has not been given much opportunity in the series so far – he batted and bowled in the first match but did neither in the second – but if the situation arises where a player with big-match temperament is needed, Morkel might be the right fit.Team news Jesse Ryder returns for New Zealand and will likely slot in in place of Colin de Grandhomme, who has been unconvincing so far. Although New Zealand’s bowling took a pasting on Sunday, they are likely to stick with the same attack.New Zealand: (probable) 1 Martin Guptill, 2 Rob Nicol 3 Brendon McCullum (capt & wk) 4 Jesse Ryder 5 James Franklin 6 Kane Willamson 7 Nathan McCullum, 8 Doug Bracewell 9 Tim Southee, 10 Ronnie Hira, 11 Kyle MillsSouth Africa may not want to tinker with a winning XI but if they attribute the victory largely to Richard Levi’s innings, they may require some changes in the bowling department. Marchant de Lange’s inexperience showed and Rusty Theron may get another opportunity to prove his death bowling prowess.South Africa: (probable) 1 Hashim Amla, 2 Richard Levi, 3 AB de Villiers, 4 JP Duminy, 5 Justin Ontong, 6 Albie Morkel, 7 Johan Botha 8 Wayne Parnell 9 10 Rusty Theron/Marchant de Lange 11 Morne Morkel 12 Lonwabo TsotsobeStats and Trivia Of the seven Twenty20s Eden Park has hosted, two of them have been tied matches. Both were between New Zealand and West Indies. The first was in 2006 and the second in 2008. Quotes”I think it’s a huge match. We have obviously been trucking along pretty good until the last performance when we got hit pretty hard. From our point of view, this is a pivotal moment.”
“It’s good to play in tight games. It’s nice to be at one-all and I’m sure there’ll be a lot of expectation. The big games, like this, really matter.”

Warne suffers minor burns in cooking mishap on BBL eve

Shane Warne has suffered serious burns to his bowling hand a mere five days from the Melbourne Stars’ first match in the Twenty20 Big Bash League, placing his fitness for the start of the tournament in some jeopardy. The burns, which Warne relayed to the world via a graphic image on Twitter, were sustained in a cooking accident. His team was due to take part in a practice match on Monday, though the Stars have indicated that Warne was not scheduled to take part in the fixture.”Not ideal preparation for practice match today-burning the bowling hand Get better quickly please, any suggestions-HELP,” Warne wrote. “Ps no more trying to be a master chef ! Stop and by a bacon roll on the way to the ground next time – silly Shane !”Cameron White, the Stars’ captain, said Warne was confident he would be fit to play on Saturday.”I saw his hand and I saw the pic on Twitter as well – it’s one of those things, it looks a lot worse than probably what it is,” White told reporters. “He said to me in the rooms before that he’s pretty sure he’ll be able to bowl on Wednesday and 100 per cent confident he’s going to play on Saturday as well.”It’s just part and parcel of Warney. The boys are really looking forward to playing with him and what he brings to the table – from burning his hand cooking a bacon sandwich to everything that he’ll do out on the ground.”Warne’s mishap was not the only drama to envelop Melbourne’s two T20 teams in the days before the start of the BBL.Another Star, the Tasmanian allrounder James Faulkner, suffered a dislocated finger in the field during the practice match, while the Renegades’ Brad Hodge has suffered a hamstring injury. Simon Helmot, the Renegades coach, said he felt “sick” after confirmation that Hodge had suffered a hamstring tear.”Obviously when one of your main men go down, it’s disappointing,” he said. “He was a bit dejected at the time, he was really disappointed. But he’s a competitor, he’ll do everything possible to get himself right as soon as possible.”

Keedy turns Lancashire's fortunes

Spinner Gary Keedy produced a stunning spell as Lancashire Lightning secured their first win in the Friends Life t20 with an eight-run victory over Worcestershire Royals

03-Jun-2011
ScorecardSpinner Gary Keedy produced a stunning spell as Lancashire Lightning secured their first win in the Friends Life t20 with an eight-run victory over Worcestershire Royals.Keedy claimed 3 for 15 in his four overs at Old Trafford to help turn the match around. At the end of the seventh over Worcestershire were coasting at 72 for 3 in reply to Lancashire’s 154 for seven. But Keedy, along with wicketkeeper Gareth Cross who made three stumpings, changed that as the Royals finished on 146 for 9.Moeen Ali hit six boundaries off as many balls in the opening two overs as the Royals raced to 26 at the end of the second. But he did not add to his 24 as he was trapped lbw by Kyle Hogg in the third.Vikram Solanki and Alexei Kervezee kept the run rate above 10 as the Royals passed 50 in the fourth. But Lancashire began to turn the game in their favour when Simon Kerrigan bowled Solanki for 13.Kervezee’s innings of 21 from just 10 balls ended in the next over as he chipped Hogg to Stephen Parry. Keedy then ripped the heart out of the Royals. James Cameron was caught in the deep by Steven Croft in Keedy’s first over, then Cross stumped Aneesh Kapil off the first ball of his next as Worcestershire slumped to 83 for 5.Cross struck again in Keedy’s final over as Ben Scott went for 6, and he made it a hat-trick of stumpings in the 16th as Gareth Andrew fell to Croft. Parry ended Daryl Mitchell’s resistance before Chris Whelan was run out in the penultimate over as Worcestershire fell short.Earlier, having won the toss, Tom Smith and Stephen Moore put on 38 in the opening four overs for Lancashire, with Moore smashing five boundaries against his former employers. Jack Shantry broke the partnership in the fifth when Smith was caught by Kervezee for 18. Moore followed in the next over from Whelan for 28.Paul Horton and Croft put on 42 for the third wicket in six overs before they both went in the space of three balls. First Horton was bowled by Ali for 20, and Croft followed in the same over lbw for 14.Solanki claimed his only wicket of the innings when Mitchell pulled off a brilliant catch to send Cross back for nine. Jordan Clark was dropped twice in successive balls in Shaaiq Choudhry’s last over by Shantry and Solanki, but he fell two overs later for 15, bowled by Andrew.Luke Procter led a late Lancashire rally, smashing 17 from just seven deliveries before he was bowled by Shantry, with Hogg’s 14 from 12 balls taking Lightning over the 150 mark.

Windwards on the verge of an easy win

A round-up of the second day of the third round of the Regional Four Day Competition

ESPNcricinfo staff20-Feb-2011Windward Islands are on the verge of an easy win against Guyana in St Vincent. After bowling out Guyana for 142 on the opening day, Windwards’ top and middle orders chipped in to steer them to 223 on the second. Andre Fletcher made 43 and Keddy Lesporis contributed 46. Legspinner Devendra Bishoo picked up five wickets, giving his team a chance of a fightback despite conceding an 81-run lead. But Guyana capitulated in their reply. Seamer Mervin Matthew picked up four wickets, blowing away the top order, and leaving his opponents reeling at 98 for 9 at stumps. Bishoo resisted with 23 down the order, but there is little hope left for Guyana with just one wicket remaining and them just 12 runs ahead.Barbados fought back on the second day against Jamaica at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown. Seamer Jason Holder finished with a five-for and shared eight wickets with Fidel Edwards as the pair ran through the remainder of the Jamaica line-up after they had posted 316 for 5 on the opening day. The last five wickets fell for just eight runs, the first among them being overnight batsman David Bernard, who made 84. In response, the Barbados batsmen impressed with opener Kraigg Brathwaite making 76, backed up by a half-century from captain Ryan Hinds. At stumps, Barbados were 220 for 4, still 96 runs behind.Combined Campuses and Colleges took control over their contest against Leeward Islands in Antigua. In a collective bowling effort, where each of the six bowlers used picked up at least a wicket, CCC were able to bowl out Leewards for 186. The Leewards top and middle-order batsmen got starts but were unable to push on. Tonito Willet was the only one who managed to reach a half-century and he was helped by Lionel Baker at No.10, who made 37 to rescue his team from 125 for 8. But Leewards still conceded a lead of 100 which was extended to 147 by stumps with CCC still having nine wickets remaining.Trinidad and Tobago held the edge against England Lions at the Queen’s Park Oval. T&T needed just one wicket on the second day to end the England Lions innings and that didn’t take too long to come as the visitors were bowled out for 325. T&T replied strongly with openers Lendl Simmons and Justin Guillen chipping in with 30s, and the experienced hands Runako Morton and Darren Ganga adding an unbeaten 49 for the third wicket to take their team to 173 for 2, still 152 adrift.
