Sundar Raman, the IPL’s chief operating officer, has filed an affidavit in India’s Supreme Court in response to the Mudgal panel’s report and has denied allegations of misdemeanour against him.The Mudgal committee’s report had stated that Raman knew “a contact of a bookie and contacted him eight times in one season”, but claimed to be “unaware of his connection with betting activities”. The report also said that he had received information about Chennai Super Kings’ team official Gurunath Meiyappan and Rajasthan Royals co-owner Raj Kundra betting, but did not act on it.In his affidavit, Raman said he had professional integrity. He also said that one of his duties as the IPL’s chief operating officer was to interact with various individuals, including celebrities and officials, and the interactions could not be the basis for a misdemeanour.”I hold a PG degree in management and prior to working with the BCCI, I was employed by a multinational media and advertising agency,” Raman said in his statement. “In all, I have 20 years of experience as a professional with high integrity. I was recruited by the BCCI in 2008 and as part of my duties, I had to interact with various officials, VIPs, bureaucrats and celebrities from all walks of life.”Most of the interactions revolve around arranging and facilitating their attendance at matches and events connected to IPL. The Mudgal committee report doesn’t specifically say that I had knowledge that the person concerned was the contact of a bookie. The person concerned was also a celeb, a movie actor and also a TV star. As IPL COO, I had to deal with celebrities as part of my job. Celebs often call for tickets and invites to events – such bonafide interaction can’t be basis of any misdemeanour on my part.”Sundar Raman was one of the four key individuals – along with sidelined BCCI president N Srinivasan, Meiyappan and Kundra – named by the Supreme Court earlier this month in connection with the Mudgal panel’s report of the IPL 2013 spot-fixing case, and the court observed that the report had suggested several “misdemeanours”.Despite the controversy, Raman has the backing of the BCCI after the board decided, during its working committee meeting in Chennai last week, to support his defence in front of the Supreme Court. The next hearing of the case is on November 24.

Rogers mulls declaration for title prospects

Last week, Chris Rogers rejected the chance to tempt Northants with a target on the final day. Whether he is in more enterprising mood on day four here will go a long way towards determining Middlesex’s title prospects

Last week, Chris Rogers rejected the chance to tempt Northamptonshire with a target on the final day: he was “Once bitten, twice shy,” after Nottinghamshire had chased down a target of 385 a few weeks earlier. Whether he is in more enterprising mood on day four will go a long way towards determining Middlesex’s prospects of winning the title. There is much to entice Rogers. Yorkshire look like they are closing in on another victory – and making good on Dickie Bird’s determination that his year as President includes the Championship. This Uxbridge wicket is not breaking up, but it is providing a more even contest between bat and ball than many wickets this season. And in Marcus Trescothick, Rogers has an opposing captain keen to push for the victory that would boost Somerset’s own prospects: declaring 74 runs behind was what they call funky captaincy. It received immediate reward, too, with a loose shot from Rogers off an immaculate away-swinger from Alfonso Thomas.Given that Middlesex have often been accused of over-reliance on Rogers, Somerset would have spied an opportunity. But Nick Gubbins and Dawid Malan have twice produced century partnerships in response to Rogers’ early dismissal in this game. A pair of left-handers particularly strong square of the wicket, they were perhaps most easily distinguishable by their choice of attire. Gubbins eschewed a jumper in the manner of an Englishman savouring the sun; befitting a man schooled in South Africa, Malan seemed not to regard a jumper as optional.Since Sam Robson was whisked away by England, Gubbins has made a serene start to his Championship career. He has hit three half-centuries and tomorrow offers the prospect of converting his 67, already his top score, into a century. He has the appearance of an accumulator rather than dominator; the comparisons with fellow Radley College alumnus Andrew Strauss may become well worn, even if the resemblance is not striking. But Gubbins also possesses a brilliant pull: in both innings he has whipped balls into the car park with timing worthy of Eoin Morgan. Morgan himself showed glimpses off his best form, lofting compatriot George Dockrell over long off and then piercing the offside with a pair of cuts.More initiative will be needed tomorrow to pressure Somerset: so far the third-wicket pair have added 61 at 2.73 an over. “The new ball does a bit but when it softens up it’s hard to score but also to get people out,” was Gubbins’ assessment. “The main thing is we’re in a position to reassess now.”The fear is the 40 overs lost in the match may prevent a pulsating finish, though Middlesex may entertain the notion of setting Somerset 350 in 75 overs. Still, it is not a conversation that Middlesex would have anticipated as Alex Barrow and Nick Compton extended their fifth-wicket partnership to 84. Both looked assured at either end, but rather less assured between them. After hints of trouble, the dreaded run-out occurred. Attempting a two off Steven Finn, Barrow ran two and a half while Compton remained safely stationed after running one. It looked like Barrow would be reprieved by an inaccurate throw from square leg, but Nick Gubbins in the covers reacted smartly and Finn finished the job. From 185 for 4 and realistic aspirations of gaining a first innings lead, Somerset swiftly collapsed. Neil Dexter ended Peter Trego’s merry 24, and then Toby Roland-Jones located zip and reverse swing with the old ball to account for Craig Overton, before promptly adding Lewis Gregory, caught at cover, with the new ball. All the while Nick Compton remained resilient and unmoved, doing what Nick Compton does. He found a like-minded ally in Thomas and the upshot was they added 31 in 107 austere deliveries. It didn’t seem like declaration batting but then, incongruously, Compton hit a delivery in the air. He was caught at square leg off Steven Finn – a fitting demise considering the quality of their duel on the second day. After 278 balls of skilled resistance, Compton’s slow trudge off spoke of a man who felt he had earned a century. No Middlesex bowler would have disagreed.

South Africa clinch narrow D/L win

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsQuinton de Kock powered South Africa’s speedy start•Associated Press

After six weeks of tussling in the Arabian Desert, the South African and Pakistan teams would have been grateful for the freshness of rain. Just not on match day. South African skies burst to interrupt what seemed set to be the most competitive Twenty20 match between these two sides in the recent past and the hosts won by four runs, according to the Duckworth-Lewis method. The host batsmen began like the fierce downpour which swept across the ground forty minutes before the scheduled start of play, but Pakistan pulled them back to little more than a drizzle. In reply, Pakistan built themselves up to a position from which they could have produced a storm themselves. But the real thing intervened before any of that was possible to deny the sizeable Wanderers crowd a potentially thrilling finish. After being sent in, Hashim Amla and Quinton de Kock powered their way to 69 runs off the first seven overs, making Pakistan’s decision to field first look questionable. Their seamers, including the experienced Sohail Tanvir – who has played regularly at this ground for the Lions – to the relatively new Anwar Ali, and even Junaid Khan, could not adapt to conditions. The bowlers sprayed the ball wide and their lengths were too full.De Kock and Amla put on a fireworks display of aggressive shots in response. Amla spanked the ball through the covers, de Kock used his wrists to smoke the ball through the leg side. Runs rained from their bats even as debutant Bilawal Bhatti showed the first threat, inducing an outside-edge from de Kock, which scooted to the third-man boundary.Pakistan had opted to leave out Saeed Ajmal, a choice which appeared to be wrong until Mohammad Hafeez brought himself on and enjoyed immediate success. Amla was bowled when he came forward to drive. De Kock followed him in Hafeez’s next over, when he mis-hit a ball to long-on and Tanvir took a well-judged catch on the boundary.Soon Shahid Afridi had Henry Davids cramped for room, prodding awkwardly only to be bowled, and Pakistan had taken three wickets for 15 runs. Afridi, bowling quicker than usual, did not concede a boundary in his spell. In the eight-over period in which Afridi and Hafeez bowled, the pair gave away only 32 runs.Pakistan’s main concern was the rest of the bowling. Bhatti’s debut got better when he was brought back on and he bowled a back-of-a-length ball to dismiss JP Duminy for his first international wicket. Duminy pulled off the front foot but got it only as far as midwicket where Hafeez took the catch falling forward.David Miller countered that length better, sending Bhatti over the scoreboard for the only six of the innings and ensured South Africa finished fairly strongly. They scored 46 runs off the last five overs but Pakistan would still have been satisfied with their efforts. From 9.8 runs an over in the first seven, Pakistan allowed a rate of 6.46 through the next 13 and had a realistic chance at a successful chase.Pakistan’s reply began fortuitously, with five wides from Lonwabo Tsotsobe but soon settled. Ahmed Shehzad started in a manner befitting his ranking as the leading T20 run-getter this year, flicking Dale Steyn down to fine leg and cracking the bowler over point. He grew over-confident when he tried to run the ball behind point but was foxed by extra bounce from Tsotsobe and played on.Mohammad Hafeez negotiated a Dale Steyn over which ended with the Pakistan captain timing a full ball past mid-on. Nasir Jamshed seemed to settle in the same way, when he pulled Morne Morkel in front of square, but was surprised by the extra bounce and played a couple of nervy edges which went for four. His stay at the crease ended when he pushed at Duminy’s third ball and the offspinner stretched full length to take the return catch. Pakistan promoted Umar Akmal to No.4 but he was at the crease for just 10 balls before the heavens opened to leave Pakistan wondering what could have been.

Azharuddin offered J&K coach position

Mohammad Azharuddin, the former India captain, has been offered the post of Jammu & Kashmir coach

Amol Karhadkar16-Aug-2013Mohammad Azharuddin, the former India captain whose life ban for indulging in match-fixing was overturned last year by the Andhra Pradesh High Court, has been offered the post of Jammu & Kashmir coach.Farooq Abdullah, president of the Jammu & Kashmir Cricket Association, confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that Azharuddin, now a Member of Parliament from Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh, was offered the position that has been vacant since Bishan Singh Bedi’s exit after the end of last season. “We still haven’t reached the final decision,” Abdullah said.Mujeeb Khan, Azharuddin’s secretary, said the former batsman hadn’t made up his mind. “He has been offered the post of coach by JKCA but he hasn¹t decided whether to take it or not,” Mujeeb said. “They want to avail of whatever services he could render. He is seriously considering it since he is desperate to give back to the game that has been so close to his heart.”Even if Azharuddin accepts the offer, his return to the cricket field, albeit as a coach, won’t be easy. When the BCCI banned Azharuddin for life in 2000, he was barred from participating in any cricketing activity. Though the ban was deemed illegal by the Andhra Pradesh High Court in November 2012, a BCCI official said Azharuddin cannot return to cricket in any role without the board’s permission since the ruling has been challenged.”The High Court verdict was based on a technicality. Nowhere did the court say he is not guilty of indulging in fixing,” the board official said. “Since the proceedings to challenge the verdict have been initiated, as far as the BCCI is concerned, any association that wants to appoint him in any capacity cannot do so without the board’s consent.”Since being banned, Azharuddin, 50, has had no involvement in cricket-related matters. Besides Azharuddin, Ajay Sharma was also banned for life and hasn’t been active in cricket. Ajay Jadeja, whose five-year ban was overturned by the BCCI, returned to domestic cricket for a couple of seasons before becoming a cricket expert on television. Manoj Prabhakar, who was also banned for five years, turned a coach after serving his ban and was the bowling coach of Delhi.

Left-arm spinner Harmeet Singh switches to Vidarbha

Left-arm spinner Harmeet Singh has chosen to switch allegiances from Mumbai to Vidarbha in first-class cricket. The bowler, who was a part of the Under-19 World Cup-winning squad, is believed to have taken the decision after being ignored by Mumbai’s selectors. The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) issued a no-objection certificate (NOC) last week, to allow Harmeet to switch over.MCA provided differing reasons on Harmeet’s switch. “Last year too, his father had approached me to let his son play for another domestic side (Haryana),” MCA joint secretary PV Shetty told . “I was able to convince him that we would give him opportunities here. This time they insisted again, and we relented because we have the boy’s future in mind. If he gets an opportunity to play somewhere else, it will be good for his career.”MCA’s joint secretary Nitin Dalal said the presence of other left-arm spinners made picking Harmeet difficult. “With so many left-arm spinners around (Iqbal Abdulla, Ankit Chavan and Vishal Dabholkar), he was not getting an opportunity to play for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy,” Dalal said. “He also suffered from an injury last year and couldn’t play much. His father, too, is shifting to Nagpur so we had to give him the green signal.”Harmeet Singh made his Ranji trophy debut for Mumbai in 2009, where he took seven wickets against Himachal Pradesh. In five-first class games, Harmeet has taken 25 wickets. He also led the Mumbai U-19 team to the Cooch Behar Trophy in the 2011-12 season. The bowler was part of the India U-19 squad and picked 6 wickets in four games at an economy rate of 3.02 during the Under-19 World Cup last year.

Ashwin: Jasprit Bumrah 'deserves the captaincy'

Former India allrounder says Rohit and Kohli retiring will create a leadership vacuum

ESPNcricinfo staff13-May-202513:14

Gill or Bumrah – the only decision selectors need to make?

R Ashwin has said the sudden retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have created a significant leadership vacuum in India’s Test team and that Jasprit Bumrah is a deserving candidate for the captaincy.”I didn’t have an idea both [Rohit and Kohli] would retire together,” Ashwin said on his Youtube show . “This will a testing time for Indian cricket, and I’ll say this is truly now the beginning of the Gautam Gambhir era.”The team that will tour England will be a completely new team, a transformed team where Bumrah will probably be the senior-most player. He is obviously one of the captaincy options; I think he deserves the captaincy, but the selectors will take a decision based on his physical capacity.”Their retirements will definitely create a leadership vacuum. You can’t buy experience, especially on tours like this. Virat’s energy and Rohit’s composure will be missed.”Related

Shubman Gill is considered the frontrunner to succeed Rohit despite Bumrah having been vice-captain until the tour of Australia earlier this year. He was the stand-in captain during the victory in the Perth Test and also led the side when Rohit stood down for the fifth Test in Sydney. The primary consideration around whether Bumrah should be captain or not is the managing of his workload, given his recent injury concerns. He had trouble with his back during the Sydney Test and had to miss the home bilateral series against England, the Champions Trophy, and the start of IPL 2025.Reflecting on the timing of Rohit and Kohli’s retirements, Ashwin said he thought both players had more to offer. “There will be a sense of fulfilment, but I honestly feely Kohli definitely had one-two years of Test cricket left in him,” Ashwin said. “Rohit, I felt would at least go on till the England Test series, because there’s a leadership vacuum in the team.”Tests has been the finest [format for India] in the last 10-12 years, but just for the sake of leadership, Rohit should’ve played till the England series, and if he’d performed, he could’ve carried on and given some more leadership.”My favourite piece of batsmanship of Rohit for India was when he played in England [2021],” he said. “When he and KL Rahul opened, we were 2-1 ahead because of Rohit. The opening partnership was gun, strong.”Between 2018-19 to 2022-23 was Rohit’s best phase as a Test batter. Even the Covid series in Australia which we won, his batting was top notch. Then also he was looking very good, didn’t get big runs but batting was top notch.”Ashwin picked Kohli’s twin centuries in Adelaide during his Test captaincy debut in 2014 as one of the finest performances he had seen.”Kohli the Test cricketer was box office, he was brand ambassador of Test cricket in many ways,” Ashwin said. “Some of his best knocks haven’t always resulted in wins, but that’s taking nothing away from those knocks. The twin hundreds in Adelaide in 2014 – that knock not finishing in a win is a shame. The 153 in Jo’burg, the pink-ball Test when we were all out for 36, the 74 he made in the first innings – some of the knocks are incredible.”

Fame is the spur, not statistics – Swann

Graeme Swann, the most successful spinner in England Test history and a driving force behind their recent Test series win in India, has said that it his sense of winning a place in cricket history, rather than setting new statistical standards, which gives him the most satisfaction in playing the game.In an ebullient and revealing interview with Alison Mitchell, Swann made light of the fact that during the India series he surpassed Jim Laker as the leading Test wicket-taker among England offspinners of all time.”I am more interested in history than stats, if that makes sense,” he said. “People who play the game with a desperation to average 40 or desperate to score a hundred against each team, things like that, personally I feel it is a selfish way to go about it.”I love the fact that if your name is known and you are remembered in cricket history then statistics go out of the window. Nobody can tell you anyone’s average, apart from Don Bradman’s because that was exceptional.”Swann jokes that his ability to surpass Laker as the most successful England offspinner in history has something in common with Dynamo Magician, the 30-year-old Bradford-born magician, Steven Frayne, who sprung to fame when he walked across the River Thames in front of the Houses of Parliament two years ago.”It is a lot of smoke and mirrors,” he said. “Everybody thinks if you are not a mystery spinner you can’t take wickets, but if you look at most wickets taken in the world the ball doesn’t do anything ridiculous. There might be one in ten. The batsmen just get themselves out. It’s like a game of chess when you are bowling. You just try to win as many battles as you can.”Swann’s ability to handle the pressure of Test cricket, he believes, also plays a part. “I can bowl at a guy in a county game and freed up from the pressure they are suddenly the best player in the world. If you are not fazed by the pressure it plays into your hands.”I am quite subdued when I bowl. I don’t say anything to the batsman. I don’t try to whip up a storm of excitement around the bat. But I hope they think I am working to a plan.”Swann does become more passionate, though, when errors are made in the field off his bowling, something he often promises to control but suspects he never quite will. “It’s not so much dropped catches I get angry about,” he said. “I get exasperated if a catch is dropped. I get angry if players aren’t watching or are in the wrong place. Bowlers mess up in the field because they are not as athletic but batsmen don’t concentrate.”Swann spends most of his time at slip, where conversation with England’s Test and one-day captain, Alastair Cook, often strays into farming territory. “Me and Matty Prior reckon we could have our own lambing season with all he has told us about putting his hand up sheep’s bottoms,” Swann said.
